When discussing how students of different mathematical levels solve problems the last sentence stuck out in particular. The statement talking about mathematically proficient students says, “they (the students) can understand the approaches of others to solving complex problems and identify correspondence between different approaches.” This stood out in particular because it should be many people’s goal to have the ability to understand complex problems and find different ways to solve it. According to The Case for Quantitative Literacy, innumeracy is a person’s unfamiliarity or inability to apply mathematical skills to a variety of situations. This is a problem for modern American society because more students are being placed in remedial courses and they are unable to apply the things they have learned to their jobs despite what subject they are studying which is extremely important. For African Americans, Jim Crow laws encompassed and affected every part of American life. The racial slur synonymous with negro and the laws used to discriminate against them. Two of the most recognizable figures advocating against of Jim Crow were Booker T. Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Though they lived through different times, they both shared the same goal of bettering circumstances of the African Americans people. While sharing a same common goal, Booker T. Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr. had different approaches to confronting the color line, each approach with its positive and negative attributes.

These are the words of a man, Nelson Mandela, who fought for something that many would shy away from. “Inclusion, not exclusion, is the key to survival.” What does this mean? To say the least, the definition is clearly stated in The Power of One, as well as Richard Wright’s Black Boy. Actually, both these works resemble each other by both having many types of isolation. Initially, P.K. in The Power of One and Richard in Black Boy are isolated by members of their family. Subsequently, they are both excluded by society because of their backgrounds. Ultimately, they are excluded within their own races because of their actions throughout their stories.
In the film, various students are shown to be quite vocal about what they believe they cannot accomplish, and this mainly revolves around Jaime Escalante’s math class. Many students claim that math is just not for them, that they do not understand it and are better off without it. The filmmaker specifically shows this through a scene in the beginning of the film when Escalante asks different students a simple question on a basic concept in math and given in return unsure answers. The filmmaker gives close up shots of the students looking down at their desks, seemingly unconfident in their own understanding of basic math. The students at first resist trying to take math seriously, but with time Escalante eventually succeeds at sparking their interest and showing them that they are capable of a lot more than they believe to be possible. When someone needs to utilize a skill every day then he/she needs a strong background in the skill. Therefore, today’s students need more than a just a working knowledge of mathematics or enough knowledge to pass a test. Today’s students need to understand how mathematics works and how to utilize mathematics skills in the best way possible.
