According to Powell & Koltz (2012) Powell was born in 1937 to Jamaican immigrants in Harlem, New York. He was educated in New York City public schools, and graduated from Morris High School in 1945. From there he would attend City College of New York to study geology. During his time at City College is where he would find his path into ROTC, followed by a commission in the United States Army. At an early age he served as an army infantry officer where he held command in various battles.
He grew up in a hard life, with a single mother and 4 brothers all living in poverty, trying to get by. But, despite facing many barriers of poverty, racial discrimination, and prejudice, he became one of the best players for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and broke the racial barriers in major league sports that had been upheld for over 50 years. By doing this, he opened doors for many who could not succeed before. Although he was not revered by all when he was alive, he became a civil rights figure and leader, and became a national hero to us all.
“There’s a time for casting silver; a time for casting cannon. If that isn’t in the red, it should be!”There’s is a time for making money and there’s a time to go to war. His early life, the cause of why he joined the war, roles in the war, and after the war he was an inspiring person.
As a Non Commissioned Officer in the Pennsylvania Army Nation Guard, I realize the importance and value of good leadership. A leader has to be able to understand and support their men, have initiative, be quick on their feet, and accept responsibility for their actions. The personal traits that I look for in a leader are courage, commitment, candor, competence, and integrity. Out of these the most important one to me, is integrity. A man’s word is his bond and the most important leadership trait there is. Looking back, the man I see as a great leader that possesses these traits is Ret. General Colin Powell. Colin Powell is one of the greatest military leaders in this country’s history. He served this country

I learn many things by reading his biography. Since american culture is not my culture I learn more about the segregation that took place in this country this was something new to me. In my country, this was not a problem because all the races were mix with each other. There was not a separation between the races; the religion played a important role in this because we are a very religious people and after the abolition of slavery there was not segregation or discrimination against skin color of
Many people would not consider their lives interesting enough to capture and hold an audience’s interest. I chose to write about this man because I don’t think he has led a boring life by any definition of the words. Where he had initially failed to see the value of its content and did not see the incredible challenges he has overcome to build the man he is today, I have discovered otherwise. Any story of a person going above and beyond with self sacrifice at the highest of levels is worth writing about in my opinion. Even when facing the toughest of obstacles, the love for humanity in this man’s heart cannot be
Colin Luther Powell was born on April 5th 1937, In New York City. Powell’s was raised by his parents Luther Theophilus Powell and Maud Arial in the South Bronx. He attended Morris High School where he graduated in 1954. In 1958, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in geology from the City College in New York. While attending college Powell joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in the military which he really liked. Upon graduation from college Powell was commissioned into the US Army as a second lieutenant. This is where it he began his fruitful and long career being a part of the US Army as well as a civil servant in the US government. In April 1989, Powell while serving in the US Army was advanced up to the level of four star general. Powell retired from the US Army in September 1993 after a successful career. Powell then served as the secretary of state as well as the national security adviser. Being a part of the US Military is what interested me in the decision to read his book.
The book tells the story of the death of much of the author's family. It shows how he overcame much adversity and survived his training.
Several characters are introduced throughout this memoir, some were very close friends others he did not care too much for, but he fought for all of them the same; as soldiers. Having performed his duty in
He was a child who grew up during the Great Depression with a single mother and a sister. He spoke about his life in a positive way when he could have easily made it a very sad story and I admired how he kept things positive. This memoir was hard for me to get in to but nevertheless, I enjoyed reading about his life and how he made the best out of his
Throughout his public life, he embodied for many people an ideal of persistence, tolerance and personal strength. In my opinion, it is the combination of these qualities that made him an outstanding person and a globally recognized leader. Neither persistence without strength, nor strength without tolerance would suffice to turn around the life of
His integrity was the characteristic that allowed other men to follow him with a clean heart. His refusal to do what he knew to be wrong strengthened his role as a leader every time he exercised it. The integrity needed to turn in your best friend for dealing drugs is astounding. Even though his wife and his commanding officer were questioning whether he should listen to his conscience, he did so any way. His integrity also shone when he signed his resolution. The idea that he wanted to state publicly in front of everyone who he cared about, that he was going to live his life with integrity and by honoring God is astounding. This showed that he is a man who is worth following. This integrity is what makes him a man worth following. Without it, he would be a leader with nowhere to lead.
