The Catcher in the Rye is one of J. D. Salinger's world-famous books about the disgruntled youth. Holden Caulfield is the main character and he is a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Navigating his way through the challenges of growing up, Holden separates the “phony” aspects of society, and the “phonies” themselves. Some of these “phony” people in his life are the headmaster whose friendliness depends on the wealth of the parents, and his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection. A court case is an event of great importance, and most trails ultimately end with the person or concept on trail being condemned to be guilty, or being declared innocent of the charge. Some trails take session upon session to find the truth of whether one is guilty and innocent. The longer the trail, the harder it often gets to tell between right and wrong. However, the guilt of some is painfully obvious. The story follows the protagonist, Hester Prynne, who commits adultery with the town minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, producing the child she raises on her own named Pearl. Guilt is a common theme for the duration of the novel which covers all aspects of the shame each character feels. These particular dimensions of shame come specifically from different objects in the novel and what they represent.
Guilt and shame haunt all three of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter, but how they each handle their sin will change their lives forever. Hester Prynne’s guilt is publicly exploited. She has to live with her shame for the rest of her life by wearing a scarlet letter on the breast of her gown. Arthur Dimmesdale, on the other hand, is just as guilty of adultery as Hester, but he allows his guilt to remain a secret. Instead of telling the people of his vile sin, the Reverend allows it to eat away at his rotting soul. The shame of what he has done slowly kills him. The last sinner in this guilty trio is Rodger Chillingworth. This evil man not only hides his true identity as Hester’s husband, but also mentally torments
The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, is the nephew of John Hathorne. During the Salem Witch Trials, the only judge that did not apologize for the remorseless and cruel acts that were put upon many men and women was in fact John Hathorne. Nathaniel changed his last name from Hathorne to Hawthorne in an attempt to disassociate himself from his uncle. John Hathorne is the reason why Nathaniel Hawthorne is obsessed with the puritan times. Hawthorne lived in the 1800s, but the setting of the novel is based before the Salem Witch Trials were held in the 1600s. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the symbolism of the scarlet letter, Dimmesdale, and burrs to contribute to the overall theme of guilt.

The ambition of Lady Macbeth has the potential to lead her to true success, but the presence of guilt instead leads her to insanity and ultimately, her downfall. "Here's the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. " In the presence of blood, Macbeth endures great remorse for his partaking in Duncan's murder.
Throughout the play, “The Tragedy of Macbethâ€, Shakespeare alludes several concepts towards the idea that corrupting power and unchecked ambition often leads to one’s inability to escape the burden of their self perceived guilt. In contrast to her previous determination to kill Duncan, in the excerpt from Act 5 , scene 1 , of the play, Lady Macbeth is indirectly characterized as guilt ridden from committing regicide and the nonessential murders that followed afterwards. In Lady Macbeth’s character developement, Shakespeare displays an extensive use of symbolism, hyperbole, and both synecdoche and metonymy throughout the passage to characterize her new conscience-stricken character. Throughout the story macbeth does lots of things that can cause him to have guilt. For example macbeth says “with these hangman's hands, listening their fear. I could not say “amen” When they did say “god bless us.”(2.2.38-40) Mabeth fails because he felt guilty after he had killed King Duncan. As he was walked by people they called out god bless us and the polite thing he could have done would have to say amen back but because he didn't that caused them to be suspicious and it also caused a tremendous amount of guilt to be added to macbeth. Guilt is a bad emotion to feel. The truth, however, is that guilt is the greatest destroyer of emotional energy. It leaves you feeling immobilized in the present by something that has already occurred.
