In this article, What Is Means to Be Transgender, the author, Fields explains what the meaning of being transgender along with some of the stories about people who decided to have transition for themselves. To start with, Fields explains what transgender really means. There are two terms which are sex and gender. When it comes to the definition of sex, it is determined by biology such as hormones and anatomy. On the other hands, as to a person’s gender, it is more like the inner feeling of being male or female. Therefore, transgender would claim that their gender and sex are in discord somehow. He also states some of the misperceptions in the light of the issue of transgender. Many assume that transgender are someone who might have different …show more content…
Firstly, it is because we are living in a fallen world, which tempts people into committing any kinds of sins. One of the important attitude that we need to have is compassion with the real understanding of their suffering. We might still commit a sin because humans are in the condition of imperfection. However, God does know our imperfection, what he wants from us is the attitude of repentance. He will forgive us with His grace and love, but before having the privilege, we must admit that we are sinners and need His assistance in order to have the eternity of life. Secondly, I believe Fields made a good observation of people suffering from their identity. I cannot examine how the transiting is tough and difficult. I learned a new fact that when they are getting used to the opposite sex, they should be able to keep on counseling stuff. This might be a burden for some of them who are out of their budget. Being a transgender is more complicated process than anything. I feel compassion with them, and I would like to treat them properly just like Jesus Christ would do. To sum, I agree on this article because his point view of view on transgender is not aiming for making arguments but rather it helps people have the right understanding of transgender. In addition, because of his explanations of transgender lifestyle, I could imagine from their point of view.
being a person whose gender identity is opposite the sex the person had or was
Transgender is ‘an umbrella term that refers to those with identities that cross over, move between,or otherwise challenge the socially constructed border between the genders. While this can include medical or social transition, it may not.’ There is a difference between transgenders and transsexuals. Transsexuals do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth and wish to ‘correct’ their gender through the use of medical intervention. These two terms however, are nearly synonymous in our culture and we tend to refer to people who wish to live as a different gender than the one they were assigned when they were born as transgenders, since the term is broader and more recognizable.
The term transgender is used to define individuals who do not identify with the sex that they were assigned at birth. For example, if a person who is born female decides later on in her life that she would like to identify as a man, that person would identify as a trans-man, and would most-likely use the pronouns “he” or “him” when describing himself.
Transgender is a metaphorical umbrella term that covers a person whose self-identification, anatomy, appearance, manner, and/or expression is different from the sex assigned to them at birth and does not fit with societies interpretation for the norm of gender roles. Included in the transgender umbrella are transsexual people, non-binary gender identities, and cross-dressing (LGBT Youth, 2017). Transgender individuals are often the target of discrimination, injustice and social stigma that can lead to negative health outcomes.
What does it mean to be transgender? Does it mean that you don’t agree with how you look? Does it mean that you don’t think the way your gender should? No, transgender means that your body doesn’t match the way your brain thinks you are.
When discussing transgendered people it is important to understand the difference between sex, and gender. “Sex is assigned at birth, refers to one’s biological status as either male or female, and is associated primarily with physical attributes such as chromosomes, hormone prevalence, and external and internal anatomy,” (APA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns Office). Sex is mainly important for medical reasons. A person can change their sex, through surgery and hormone therapy. “Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for boys and men or girls and women” (APA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns Office). Gender and sex can coincide or they can be in conflict with each other. Someone whose gender identity matches the sex they are born with is called cisgendered. Cis- is a latin prefix, meaning “on this side”. Contrarily, trans- is a prefix meaning on the “other side of”. A person who is transgender expresses
This day in age the word Transgender is one most people don’t understand or know about until now. Since it’s came into the spot light of everything. The most recent popular publication of this term is of that Caitlyn Jenner whom was formerly known as Bruce Jenner. This change if I remember currently had happen in summer of 2015 and Caitlyn Jenner was in a born after many years of hiding from the world. This isn’t the case for many others like Caitlyn instead of a welcoming publication for each and every Transgender person. It’s the opposite of just that and Transgender men/women face a harsher world for being who they feel is the real man or woman they are. Transgender women in 2014 were murder as a result of violence against them the count that was report was 12 in which this has only increase to 22 in 2015. “An additional trans woman, Mya Hall was killed by police in March.”(Tourjee. 2015). Without knowing the true number of cases like this are still unknown till this day.
Many may wonder what being a transgender person really is, a lot of people may see or refer to it as someone who has gone gender transformation, or is confused with who they are. The word transvestite is very much used when referring to a person who identifies with the opposite gender, the word 'Transvestite' itself originated in 1910 by the well known German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, who also founded the Berlin institute which was where the first 'sex change' surgeries took place. 'Transsexual' was not used until 1949, the word 'transgender' not until 1971, and 'trans not until 1996, but they all refer to the same thing. The idea of being transgender goes as far back as 1503 BC to the Egyptians. It was believed that their second
In order to fully understand what it means to be transgender, it is important to understand that gender identity is what gender a person defines themselves as, and is unrelated to sexual orientation. Sexual orientation involves romantic or sexual attraction, regardless of gender identity or expression.
(sect. Definition of transgender). Basically, that definition translates to a person being born one gender, but identifying themselves as a different one based off of the way they feel. There has been considerable testimony from the transgender population to support that they do not choose this for themselves, but instead have an innate sense that they are the opposite gender of how they are born. Why would a person choose to be transgender when every day they face a lack of acceptance and sometimes out right contempt? Americans tend not to accept the transgender community because they cannot relate to the transgender experience or do not understand what makes a person transgender. Faced with this lack of acceptance, many transgender children grow up with mental instability and depression. This is due to the stress of hiding who they are, or due to open ridicule when they don’t hide who they truly are. In some cases, transgender children are not even accepted by their own family, and they are basically forced to act in accordance with the gender they were born. In extreme cases, these
Transgender inequality has gone on for a lot of years, causing commotion, suicides, and more. Due to the lack of respect to transgender people, some feel like they don’t belong here, because of all the hate they get from others and end their life which should never happen. In 1952 “Christine Jorgenson became the first American to have a sex change” (The New York Times). The first transition from male to female sex was starting the new transgender phenomenon. One person started something and now a bunch of people do it. If someone else isn’t comfortable as who they are why would another make fun of them, when they know they are already nervous in their own skin. Transgender is a category that more people should take a stand on and protect: “That’s why we defend free speech and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender” Mr. Obama said (The New York Times). On New York Times it states, “It is always a tragedy when anybody takes their own life, doubly so when they are so young.”This week Leelah Alcorn took her own life. In her
In the case of transgendered individuals their gender identity- the sex that they see themselves as- is different than their actual sex. So, to make the two differing sides- body and mind- to match up, transgendered individuals change their physical bodies to blend seamlessly into their self-identified gender in society. Much like the transgendered man, Chaz Bono, who was born Chastity Bono. He was a man trapped in a woman's body and he told interviewers how he went through reconstructive surgery in order to feel like a man, instead of two separate people. *
Transgender is a human who does not identify with the sex that they were assigned at birth. Transgender is often shortened to trans to make it easier to say and convey what they mean easier. Transgender is an umbrella term to encompass many identities. There are many other identities that go along with being transgender like trans man or women, trans demiboy or demigirl, trans nonbinary, and many others. The thing that makes you transgender is if you self identify with being transgender than you are transgender. There are many words at this moment that are used against trans people and some of those words are tranny, transgendered, transexual, shemale, and many others. These words are used against trans people to spread hate in this world. Many trans
In this paper, I will talk about the differences of sex and gender from the aspect of transgenderism. To begin with we will provide a brief background on the sex and gender. Whenever a human born, they always have a natural sex with them. Sex, a more biologic and physiological meaning, which means two main categories, male or female, into which organisms are placed on this basis. On the other hand, gender is a social meaning pertaining to masculinity and femininity. (Urdy, 1994) It is including that biological sex, sex-based social structures or gender identity. (Haig, 2004) When we born in this world we cannot get rid of the influence of our context. As a result, sex and gender may be different for one person. Thus, some people, who have a difference sex from his or her gender, may struggle with themselves and all the world. The transgenderism suggests us about the differences of sex and gender from several parts and I will only discuss parts of them because of the limitation of words and time. For example, they have different meanings and also refer to different area. The most important is that they have different influence on how people identity themselves. Although sex and gender is different, they are many sociologists assume that we should consider sex and gender are the same. In next several sections I will elaborate the definition of sex and gender and their
Transgender a person whose self-identified gender does not correspond to the gender assigned to them at birth. Their gender identity may not conform to conventional binary notions of male and female, but rather as a third gender. The term transgender is not indicative of sexual orientation, hormonal makeup, physical anatomy, or how one is perceived in daily life.
