Technology today has hit a huge breakthrough since the 1950’s. One huge invention that has been created in the past few years in the self driving car. This is a car that does not have a driver and drives and parks itself. These cars have all of the things needed to be able to detect other cars, speeds, pedestrians and can do it in all from two football fields in length away. This car is being made through a company named Apple but the people that are producing the cars are branching off with google and uber, they are also talking with volkswagen and BMW regarding the technology. Teenage girls in the 1950’s dressed a lot different than we do today in 2017. Girls were expected to dress like their elders. Typical teenage girls wore long skirts,
Spurred on by exhibitions, industry sponsorship and education programmes, the artists of the 1960s began to grapple with the space age. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 prompted a new interest in the world of the machine, yet the artistic approach to technology differed from the Futurist and Constructivist precedent. Technology did not hold utopian potential; rather the artists of the 1960s adopted varied approaches, ranging from sheer admiration to fearful pessimism. However, by the end of the 1960s technology became closely associated with the American war effort. The negativity that developed in response resulted in the technological work of artists such as Jean Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg being pushed aside in favour of Conceptualism. Jean Tinguely’s Homage to New York (1960) and Robert Rauschenberg’s Soundings (1968) will be used to explore how these particular artists responded to the rising technology, and the extent to which artist and scientist collaborated.
Human life has many variables, and little is constant. One thing that seems constant through time is war. Another constant is human hunger for victory and glory. There will never be a time when people and nations are in perfect agreement. In a war, which is essentially a contest, it is imperative to keep up with the other side of the conflict, forcing constant alteration. Most of the major wars throughout time, including both World Wars, have been followed by dramatic technological and economic advancement typified by the 1920s and 1950s. War, and by extension, the competitive human spirit, drive new technological developments.
The 1920s often referred to as “roaring twenties” is one of the most remarkable periods because of technological advances, and scientific discoveries. Many of the inventions made during the 20s such as Insulin, Penicillin and Traffic Signals have saved numerous lives. With the invention of Vacuum Cleaner, Washing Machine, Electric Dishwasher and Refrigerator household chores have gotten much easier. Due to the advances in technology and scientific discoveries made in the 1920s, inventors and scientists today are able to study the previous work and take the invention one step farther (Inventions in the 1920s).
In the 1940’s during World War II, technology had presented an importance to ensure success on the front. There were a wide range of scientists outside the military who could make things like this possible. When the war was ending, it had been discussed that lasting peace may not be guaranteed for the future. People in the war department of the Military and in other sections discussed the need for “private organization to connect military planning with research and development decisions” (cite
William Pollard once said, "Learning and innovation go hand in hand. The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient tomorrow." Maybe the generals of World War 1 (WW1) should have been told this when they used cavalry when they were outdated and rifles and machine guns were the weapons of this war. They found this out the hard way which sparked the time of technological innovations and changes that was WW1. The three technological innovations I will write about are machine guns, planes and tanks.
Technology has changed remarkably over the last one hundred years. First, the way that we use books has changed. Another way is the way we play games. The way we communicate with each other has changed drastically over the last century as well. At this rate, with technology growing every day, we can see the “new” technology that we have right now is already being replaced with something else that is “new.”
It was dubbed The Manhattan Project and consisted of some of the most brilliant physicists at the time such as Albert Einstein. Then, in 1945 arguably the most powerful and controversial technology was developed. This was the nuclear bomb and it completely changed the world forever. This weapon could be used to decimate entire cities and the only time it was ever used during any conflict was in 1945 (Shalett, n.d.). Japan was the target and the bomb left nothing but rubble in its path.
During the 1950s there wasn't many discoveries, but the little discoveries there was had a big impact in the world of science. Discoveries such as the double helix were important because they helped expand the knowledge of science in more ways than just one. In 1953 Watson and Crick discovered DNA structured that was named the double helix. It wasn't a big hit at first but after the paper published in December 19, the discovery managed to beat even the climb of Mt. Everest. Another discovery during the year 1950 was that Animal Antibiotics can help boost the growth rate of the animals if fed to them. In 1951 scientist discover that a low calorie diet can help lower the chances of developing cholesterol. In 1954 Chlorpromazine was proven that it does not only treat nausea and vomiting, but it can also be used as a sedative.
Jackie Robinson once said “Life is not a spectator sport. . . . If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're wasting your life.” Robinson was always looking to advance not only in baseball, but in life as well. During the years 1945-1970, Americans experienced prosperity, advancements, and controversy. For example, the assassination of John F. Kennedy caused Americans to question the honesty of the government. In addition, Americans also faced massive Civil Rights movements and anti-war protests that divided the country. Some other events/people that affected this era were Martin Luther King Jr., the Space Race, and the wars in Vietnam and Korea (“Prosperity
In the 1950´s there was many medical advances and new technology found. The pacemaker and Thalidomide had immense influence on the medical industry today. Cpr and The heart and lung machine were also new upcoming technologies in the 1950ś.
In the late 20th century, technology began advancing so quickly that entire world economies underwent extraordinary transformations in very little time. It used to be only a handful of powerful people and corporations interacting in global trade and commerce, but technology has made it so “countries like India are now able to compete for global knowledge,” giving leaders and companies the ability to work with more nations than ever before (Friedman 7). The internet has given men and women the power to connect, communicate and provide information to people across the planet in an instant. It has given people the opportunity to seek knowledge, educate themselves and single-handily play a role in the world economy. This is called
With the new technological advancements of the 1900s, the concept of advertising prospered into a new industry based on the desires of the people. Historically, magazines, newspaper, radio and television have all greatly improved advertising, making it one of the largest forces that works to help or hinder society. “Before 1910, advertisers mostly sought to inform customers about products; after 1910, the main goal was to create a desire to purchase products” (Blackford 3). Thus, business strategy was created that convinced people that they needed a product. This opened up a new world for people to be manipulated into spending their money on what they thought would improve their lives. Advertising improved the
Following World War Two, the 1950’s became a time of prosperity that embodied new culture, a consumers’ market, and major fads. New products and technology was being produced and sold at prices that were affordable for the average American family. One product in particular stands out to me when thinking about an invention that impacted the nation, the automobile. Car had already been around for a while, but their sales and use exploded in the suburbs. Factories that produced military supplies converted to automobile plants and began to sale millions of vehicles. Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth were “the low-priced three” car manufactures, and their cheap sale prices allowed both husband and wife to own a car, known as a “two-car family” (Conlin
The 40’s were best known for World War II, but did you know that Velcro was invented during this time period? In the 1940’s, technological changes occurred with their effects being both positive and negative, but these effects have benefited society more by being the basis of many things used today. The technology in the 1940’s had undergone many changes.
1. Describe some of the events and scientific discoveries that shook the late nineteenth century’s confidence in the idea of progress. What effect did these events have on music, literature, and the arts?
