A company or organization might publish guidelines or codes of conduct that outline their professional ethics. It is something that everyone in that company or organization must follow. Morals refer to principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character. A person’s morals are informed by the broader rules of ethics. For example, someone wouldn’t want to steal because they don't feel morally right, it is personal. Someone else might not feel that is as bad to steal so their morals don't stop them from doing it. When it comes to engineering, building, and designing something that will be used by humans, safety is the most important step in the entire process. It should be taken very seriously by all who are involved in a project, but the engineers should be the ones who double, triple or even quadruple check safety issues. Mainly the engineers because it is in their code and law of ethics and safety is the first Canon on the list, “Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.” (NSPE, 2012). With such diverse information, and vast disparities, one might wonder, as did I, how to effectively create a safety-first culture that also embraces ethical integrity. By putting my thoughts, notes, and article reviews into an essay format, I will attempt to clear the muddied waters relating to ethical dilemmas, behaviors, and environments as they relate to not only companies, but also the role of safety and health professionals (Goetsch, 2015).
