Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson formed their partnership in 1852 in Norwich, Connecticut, with the aim of marketing a lever action repeating pistol that could use a fully self-contained cartridge. They went bankrupt and began again in 1856, when Smith & Wesson produced a small revolver designed to fire the Rimfire cartridge they patented in August of 1854. This revolver was the first successful fully self-contained cartridge revolver available in the world. Smith & Wesson secured patents for the revolver to prevent other manufacturers from producing a cartridge revolver – giving the young company a very lucrative business and established Smith & Wesson as a world leader in handgun manufacturing. When the name John Smith is mentioned, people of all ages are familiar with it and could tell a lot about him. Why is this? How is it that a man who lived over 400 years ago still so popular today, more specifically to our children? The answer to that question is because John Smith can be viewed as one of America’s earliest heroes. His leadership was vital to the survival of the Jamestown colony. Most people are familiar with his famous quote, “he that will not work shall not eat.” He carried all the qualities of an influential leader, and even had a mystical legend with Pocahontas, in which no one truly knows what happened. His leadership characteristics and qualities possessed hard work, grit, and determination. He was an individualist that had an “American” dream. However, during his time, the colonists did not look at it as an “American” dream. Without him and his leadership, America may not be what it is today.
The first guns used in America were a simple machine where the person did most of the work. The user measured and put the powder
The Jamestown landing in 1607 was the first English settlement to be established in North America. In the movie “The New World” Hollywood attempted to tell the story of the Jamestown settlement and the relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas. The movie’s portrayal of their relationship was one of two people falling in love. The historical facts of their relationship, however, paint a completely different picture. Hollywood failed to represent the truth and romanticized their relationship which was not one of love, but one of an acquaintance or friendship.
The different lives and experiences of William Bradford, John Smith, and Olaudah Equiano show how there are many ways to be adapted to a new world. There were many struggles that each of them faced, and each had different motives when writing their experiences. In some way, there are all connected to one another, with some similarities, but there are differences also.
How can two people with the same name, who lived very similar lives turn out so different? The other Wes differs from the narrator because he chose to get involved with drugs and the narrator was taught to make good choices. The narrator and the other Wes are similar because they both lived with their single mother. The narrator and the other Wes were very similar in important ways. The characters in the stories all forced problems. The characters were fearless, they forced being hunted, leaving their home. They were forced to do thing they didn’t want to. G. Stanley Hall once said “Man is largely a creature of habit, and his activities are more or less automatic reflexes from the stimuli of his environment.”. This quote from the late psychologist speaks volumes to the question: “Are we all products of our environment?” and to both of the Wes Moores. Both started their lives in Baltimore which was a very difficult place to grow up in at the time. Both didn’t have a father in their life. Although they started on equal grounds why did one get sentenced to life in prison and the other become a Rhodes Scholar and become one of the youngest officers in the entire U.S. Army? I believe that we are all products of our environment because of who we look up to, how we are houses are run, and the environment we live in.

In society, it is perceived as peculiar to act different than everyone else; to go against the norm is against the rules, in a way. In “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, George and Hazel Bergeron’s son gets the ultimate punishment for wanting to be different. Breaking the chains of his “handicaps” such as weights hung around his neck and glasses with thick distorted lenses, Harrison Bergeron tried to persuade a small group at a television station to remove their handicaps as well. He had just escaped from prison and called himself the Emperor. For breaking the many laws of equality established before the current year 2081, Harrison was shot and killed instantly, right in front of his parents who were watching

They both had the name Wes Moore and were both from Baltimore. One of these men is a scholar and writer and the other is in jail for murder. The Other Wes Moore depicts how lives can be changed through choices and circumstances. The author believes that the difference between the two Wes Moores was because of their environment, not because they did not have the same abilities or a difference in characters. Both Weses had the abilities to be successful. Wes was a high ranking cadet who had more than eight hundred cadets under his command. The other Wes ran a successful drug operation.
