Sports Gene/ Outliers Argumentative Essay Success and determination come hand and hand in order to achieve one's goals. In the excerpts “The Sports Gene” and “The Outliers” by David Epstein and Malcolm Gladwell, the authors share and express their very different opinions about the road to success. Both with strong opinions, Gladwell provides a stronger and more effective case, while Epstein provides only one or two examples of logos.
In the excerpt “The Sports Gene” by David Epstein, the author expresses how an athlete can become a world champion, even after training for only eight months. Due to his overly sized achilles tendon, Donald Thomas was able to achieve world records after practicing for only a short amount of time. Thomas’s competitor, Stefan Holm had been training and competing for over 20 years. Holm’s had been consistently practicing and striving to become the world's highest high-jumper with hard work and determination. “But the tendons are one puzzle piece that helps explain how two athletes could arrive at essentially the same place, one after a twenty-year love affair with his craft, and the other with less than a year of serious practice.” Epstein, the author, explains how Thomas’s …show more content…

“In fact, by the age of twenty, the elite performers had each totaled ten thousand hours of practice. By contrast, the merely good students had totaled eight thousand hours, and the future music teachers had totaled just over four thousand hours.” The control we have over our lives is determined by our work ethic, willingness to achieve our goals, and to strive towards them. Gladwell provides a stronger case of evidence by using proven statistics. These statistics provide the evidence that practicing regularly, and for long amounts of time does pay off in the long
