It deals with such themes as household rivalry, vengeance, and death but the main theme of the play is love and the many different ways it can be presented. The play is set in the romantic, Italian city of Verona , known for its impressive architecture and inheritance. It trails the story of two affluent families at war over an ancient dispute, whose children fall in love beside all odds, but due to the complication and hatred around them the play ends with their deaths bringing about the end to their parents quarrel. In the play, love is violet, elated, intense force that supersedes all other values, loyalty and emotions.
At times love is portrayed in the expression of religion, as in the fourteen lines whilst Romeo and Juliet first meet. Romeo and Juliet does not make a precise moral declaration about the associations between love and society, religion, and family; rather, it portrays a pandemonium and passion of being in love, coalescing images of violence, strong, death, love and family in an impressionistic rush leading to the play’s tragic termination.
The themes of death and violence pervade Romeo and Juliet, and they are always associated to passion, whether that passion is love or hatred. Love, in Romeo and Juliet, is a magnificent passion, and as such it is blinding; it can overwhelm a person as strongly and completely as hate can be. This tragic choice is the uppermost, most compelling expression of love that Romeo and Juliet can make. It is only through death that they can conserve their love, and their love is so profound that they are prepared to end their lives in its defense.
