Prompt: What was revolutionary about the Industrial Revolution?
The Industrial Revolution was a period of time during the 18th century in which the hand tools were transformed to machine manufacturing in term of mass production. People took the ideas from Enlightenment and destroyed the old order of federalism in society. As a result, the Industrial Revolution brought new changes economically, politically, and socially. New transportation method was developed and the standard of living raised as well. However, on the other hand, the Industrial Revolution was also detriment to the society by creating bad working conditions, causing pollutions, and the occurring of diseases.

First, the expanding of agricultural production led to the rise of population. For instance, the Britain's population tripled during the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution increased the life expectancy among all classes. The textile factories helped people, including the poor ones, afford cloth at cheaper prices. (Merriman, 515) The geographic feature of Great Britain also shifted to the process of industrialization. Great Britain had many natural harbors and was rich in minerals. Thus, new transportation methods were developed and factories were built by the availability of source powers. (Merriman, 513-524) As more and more factories were built in the city, transportation was improved by the building of roads and canals, the inventions of steam locomotive and steam engines, as well as the grew of railroads. People from the rural areas started to migrate to the city seeking for jobs in the factories, hence, led to the increasing in urbanization. (Merriman, …show more content…
They have to work approximately 15 hrs with excessive works a day with little time for meal and/or rest. In the film, when Chaplin was fired and accidently got into jail for "leading" a communist protestors, he was actually felt happy about staying in the jail. After he was released, Chaplin tried to be arrested again since he doesn't need to worry about where to sleep and what to eat in the jail. This happens because when machines were replacing human power, a lot of people have to face the problem of unemployment. There was less job opportunities compared to the number of people who need a job. The primary source "Conditions of the Working Class in England in 1844" by Friedrich Engels showed the pollution caused by Industrial Revolution. The quote "At the bottom flows, or rather stagnates, the Irk, a narrow, coal-black, foul-smelling stream, full of debris and refuse..." (p. 2) shows the water system were polluted by factories. People were unable to take water from the rivers for any purpose. Hence, by the 1830's and 1840's, workers formed unions to demand social and political reforms. Fighting for equality among all people, dignity of labor, and perniciousness of unrestrained capitalism. (Merriman,
The Industrial Revolution began in Britain during the late 1700s. It took place during the 18th and 19th centuries. Document 3 displays the look of the environment at the beginning of this shift in society. It is filled with smoky chimneys. Machines and factories led to great productions, such as new systems of transportation, more efficient communication, banking systems, a variety of manufactured goods, and an overall improvement of living. Britain was the perfect place for the Industrial Revolution to begin due to its coal and iron. Factories became a necessity because of the increase in demand for British goods (Staff, 2009). Before the Industrial Revolution, transportation consisted of wagons, led by horses. “In the early 1800s, American Robert Fulton built the first commercially successful steamboat” (Staff, 2009). Along
The Industrial Revolution was a time period of rapid growth in society. Referring to the 1700’s century in England where the output of machine made goods greatly increased. Prior to the changes made during the Industrial Revolution, workers often manufactured products in their homes using handtools and basic machinery. However, industrialization marked a shift of labor from small farms in rural areas to large factories in cities and was a time of new products, inventions and methods of work. The results of the Industrial Revolution led to many positive outcomes because new cultivation methods spread rapidly around the world. The Industrial Revolution made a significant political, economical, and social change throughout Europe. The Industrial
The Industrial Revolution was a long, slow, uneven process in which production shifted from simple hand tools to complex machines. The revolution began in 1750, in Great Britain, where many new sources of power began to replace humans and animals. It started with improved methods of farming, a population explosion, and new technology. It was a success and innovated many aspects of life. However, to get to all the good, the Industrial Revolution had to go through some bad.
Since the beginning of man, the human race has gone through many changes throughout history. One of the most significant and critical changes was the Industrial Revolution of Great Britain. Characterized by the development of new manufacturing processes, the Industrial Revolution was a period between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that spurred extensive changes in almost every aspect of society. These changes stimulated a major transformation in the way of life and created a modern urban society based on industrial manufacturing and not agricultural production. The Industrial Revolution debuted in England because of changes in the textile industry and agriculture leading to a more stable economic platform, an ever-increasing demand for coal, and international success in the trading market, resulting in the development and improvement of daily
The factories in the industrial revolution were bad for the environment. An excerpt from document #11, The Conditions Of The Working Class In England, states that there was smelly puddles, unpaved roads, and filth and garbage everywhere. These things are bad for the environment and they all were created by the factories during the industrial revolution. In the photo of the outside of a factory, from document #7, you can see that there was a ton of pollution coming from the factories. There was also gunk
The Industrial Revolution was a time period, from the 18th century to the 19th century, where countries were becoming more industrial and urban, where factories and . In the United States, there was mainly an increase in transportation becoming more industrialized and common. In Great Britain, there was more of an increase in manufacturing and textile production. The manufacturing was being done in homes by hand and tools, or basic machines. The Industrial Revolution helped increase mass production and got away from the domestic aspect of life, that
The Industrial Revolution, a controversial but pivotal period of time in history beginning in Britain with the Commercial and Agricultural revolutions happening in the late 1700’s. Production shifted from handmade products made by people with basic tools in their own homes to the mass production of these same things but in large factories and with machines (Ure 19). The Industrial Revolution’s main component was the discovery of coal and the finding that it could be used to fuel factories instead of using water power. This allowed for factories to be build anywhere instead of relying on a river. The increase of factories brought up more trade which increased the number of banks and financial institutions all over Europe (Dewald 248).
Industrial Revolution The Industrial revolution was a period from 18th 19th century in which some major changes took place in different fields like agriculture, mining, manufacturing, transport and technology, All these transitions had a major effect on the cultural and socio economic condition of the United kingdom. The industrial Revolution had a major role to play in changing the lives of people, it was a period of moving towards modernity and a lot of new inventions also came into being, People started to rebel against the medieval systems and modernized their thinking process. Prior to the revolution there was a concept of cottage industries but later it changed into large scale industries where massive scale production took place. People were employed in industries. The textile and iron industries along with the development of steel engine played vital role in the revolution, Trade expansion was enabled by the beginning of canals, enhanced
The industrial revolution was a period in time where there were a lot of major changes happening in agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation that affected living conditions. People were able to transport faster and more easily, but so could ideas. Around the world new ideas were being shared which created a competitive environment on who could come up with what first. These changes were the causes that generated the industrial revolution.
Throughout eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain, there was a major shift caused by social, economic and political changes, now commonly known as the Industrial Revolution. Historians, though, are still haunted by whether this was a revolution or an evolution due to the varying rate of each individual change. Britain’s population boom, rapid technological advancements, and the mass migration of workers from the countryside to cities contributing to mass-production of goods in factories and strong economic growth in areas such as the textile industry, mark this period as predominantly a revolution, however, it was also partially an evolution as poor working conditions were gradually addressed over a much longer time span.
The Industrial revolution, a worldwide movement that took place in the 18th and 19th centuries, was an innovative time period where the agrarian, small town culture moved towards industrialized, urban centers focused on mass production. The Industrial Revolution was revolutionary because it completely changes how goods were manufactured and transported from place to place. People realized the inefficiency of hand tools, small production, and limited distribution. The need to correct this inefficiency and the desire to build the economy, gave birth to the Industrial revolution.
The Industrial revolution was a period in which Great Britain became rapidly less rural and became more urban and mechanized. “The technological changes included the following: the use of new basic materials, chiefly iron and steel, the use of new energy sources, including both fuels and motive power, such as coal, the steam engine, electricity, petroleum, and the internal-combustion engine” (Britannica, 2017). The Revolution spurred ¨Inventions such as the steam engine and spinning jenny, which allowed textiles and other products to be produced quickly in factories. These industries in turn spurred improvements in roads, transportation, and banking” (Gale, 2017). The economy also saw exponential growth. However, employees of the factories rarely shared in its prosperity. ¨Common laborers during the Industrial Revolution remained poor. They worked twelve-hour days, for low wages, in factories that were hot, dirty, and overseen by oppressive factory owners who sometimes treated workers like prisoners (Gale, 2017). With the constant amount of migrants coming from the countryside to the urban cities, there was never enough work for everyone. The result was widespread poverty,
Imagine having the same job for your whole life, while wanting to have more opportunities to move forward in all aspects of life. Then finally, one day being able to have a job, that’s what the Industrial Revolution brought. The Industrial Revolution began in the late 1700s. Prior to it, people would manufacture goods in their home, and used hand made tools for their daily life. This process began in Britain and spread to other parts of the world, changing the social, cultural, and economic conditions. Although some people may say the Industrial Revolution put people to work in factories that had terrible conditions for the workers, the Industrial Revolution provided more job opportunities and introduced new technologies used to improve life.
The industrial revolution began around the 1820s and was, in fact, a series of revolutions. Each new major development marks the start of a subsequent revolution. The industrial revolution was not simply a change in technology but also brought about major social and political changes as well. Specifically, the success of Great Britain at the time laid the groundwork for Western Hegemony, a theme that would be prevalent throughout the century. Due to England’s abundance of natural resources and its existing class structures, the country was able to excel. The industrial revolution brought about new forms of production. Goods could be made much quicker and in larger quantities. One of the most important technologies developed during this time was the steam engine and the railroad system. These allowed for large amounts of trade goods to be
The Industrial Revolution was a huge turning point in history at which the development of industry began in England in the 18th century. It introduced machinery to the world. The industrial revolution was characterized by hand production to new machine manufacturing, the increased use of steam power, the rise of the factory system and development of machine tools. As time passed by, the technological innovations continued to shape the modern world, Everything that everybody uses throughout their daily lives is due to manufacturing. How would people ever have been able to put a man on the moon or get to travel from New York to Paris without the things that came from the Industrial Revolution? Of course, the consequences of the industrial revolution were brutal, but for the most part there were solutions to those consequences, that changed the world for the greater good. The benefits of the industrial revolution outweigh the costs because it led to the creation of unions, and the technological innovations from the industrial revolution helped change the lifestyle of many people.
