What is homosexuality? Homosexuality is the romantic or sexual attraction or sexual behavior between members of the same sex or gender. What is same sex marriage? Same sex marriage is marriage between two people of the same sex. The legal recognition of same-sex marriage or the possibility to perform same-sex marriage is called marriage equality or equal marriage. The recognition of same-sex marriage is a political, social, human rights, civil rights, and religious issue in many nations around the world, and there are continuous debates over whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry or to hold a civil union, or to be denied these rights. Conservative Judaism, or the Conservative Movement, has the most mixed response to homosexuality. Since 1992 Conservative Jews have strongly encouraged the welcoming of homosexual people as members of Conservative synagogues. “Conservative Judaism considers halakhah, or Jewish law, to be binding, but believes that the details and interpretations of the law can evolve as Jewish life evolves through traditional modes of rabbinic study and modern critical scholarship” (“Stances”). However, many homosexuality issues were met with little consensus with the Conservative Jews for many years. For many years, Conservative Jews did not allow the ordination of openly practicing homosexuals. If Conservative Rabbis performed same-sex commitment ceremonies, they did so without the Law Committee’s sanctions. “In December 2006 the Law Committee of the Conservative Movement voted to accept two positions, one stating that the Conservative Movement does not authorize same-sex marriages, and one permitting Conservative rabbis to conduct same-sex commitment ceremonies” (Powers). In June of 2012, the Committee voted 13 to 0 to formally approve gay marriage ceremonies. The Reform movement, or Reform
Judaism is the religion and culture of the Jewish people. The word “Judaism” derives from the Greek Ioudaismos, a term first used in the Intertestamental Period by Greek-speaking Jews to distinguish their religion from Hellenism. The unifying principles of Judaism are an identity by covenant with God as His “chosen
Conservative views are often very traditional and interpret most or all Bible passages regarding, or allegedly involving homosexuality as condemning. They interpret them as an abomination and that it is hated by
The majority of the time a conservative politician is talking about same-sex marriage, they almost always refer to The Bible as their argument. The book of Leviticus is a notorious reference when it comes to criticizing same-sex marriage. The books states that "The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the Israelite people and say to them: ... Do not lie with a male as one lies with a woman. It is an abhorrence" (Leviticus 18: 1, 2, 23). Since it is stated in this book, many Americans believe that because weddings are religious ceremonies that there should be no homosexuality involved. There is a huge flaw in this argument is in the Bill of Rights, Amendment I states that: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" (The Bill of Rights). There is no established religion within the United States, and there never will be, as long as that law stands. Marriage is a union of two people recognized by the state - a civil right. It is ordinary for a church to be aware of the ceremony as well; however, when a couple gets married in a city hall, the marriage is not recognized by a church. If two people are married by a judge, the marriage is not recognized by a church. So in all reality, same sex marriages would not have to be acknowledged by any religious group in order to be legal. A person who uses things such as The
Judaism is a monotheistic based around their sacred text called the torah which consists of the 5 books of Moses that god gave to Moses on mount Sinai.
What is Judaism? Who are Jews? Judaism is considered one of the oldest and most popular monotheistic religions today. Judaism’s followers are called Jews and they have been through many tough challenges and trials but are still able to proudly identify themselves as Jews. Jewish beliefs, customs, history, holidays, symbols, and the holocaust are just a few of the things that make Jews who they are.
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Many conservative groups do NOT agree with this decision. The gay marriage debate has been simmering for as long as I can remember. The four articles I have selected give information from four different perspectives including that of liberals, conservatives, homosexuals, and orthodox Jews. With so many differing opinions, one can understand why it's been so hard for the nation to come to agree on this issue.
The word “gay” has gone through drastic changes. Traditionally, it was a positive term that meant to be “happily excited” or “jolly” (Merriam Webster, “Gay”). It was used regularly to express one’s feelings about life. Today, it has a far different meaning. Now people use the word gay to label homosexuals, those with feminine qualities, or those who do something thought to be outside of the norm for their gender. “Being gay” went from expressing someone’s happiness to describing his sexual preference. The definition of gay has changed so much that its original meaning has become archaic and lost to the times.
Judaism preaches that all things are under gods rule. God is the creator of the universe and still is in charge of it. The Torah is a list of commandments that reveals rules of how to live for his followers. although there are ten commandments, this religion also gives their followers the free will of choice. In Judaism, religion is not a part of life but it is life. For example this is why Jews pray three times a day. Like the Christians believe that god sent a human to the earth to teach us, the Jewish also have a similar belief, in a figure named Messiah. When asked about the essence of Judaism there is this story about a man that comes to mind. He was a rabbi named Hillel who summed up Judaism while balancing on one foot, he said, "...What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the Torah. The rest is commentary..." Basically Judaism is based on self choice, there are rules to live by, but it is entirely up to the person on how to live and apply these
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy stated in the majority opinion: "The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them." Many conservatives are completely against gay marriage and they have stated that they will fight to have the Supreme Court ruling overturned.
Last but not least, Judaism comes from the Hebrew word Yehudah meaning Judah. It is the religion and way of life for the Jewish people. Judaism is considered to be the oldest religion. The Hebrew Bible is called the Torah. A synagogue is their place of worship and their services are led by a rabbi. You can be born Jewish or you can convert. There are 14 million Jews worldwide. The Jewish religion celebrates their own holidays and special days such as Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah. Imagine receiving

The political aspects of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to federal and government recognized marriages are a very complex issue. There are basically two sides to the political argument of whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. On one side are the liberals who feel that marriage is a civil right that should be denied based on the basis of a person's sexual orientation. On the other side you have conservatives who feel that marriage is an institution in which should only constitute one man and one woman. In this report we are going to examine how the issue of same-sex marriages are affecting our current political environment, how politics is affecting the movement for
even though sexuality can be considered universal, the sexual behaviors affiliated with it offer different attitudes in various communities. Sexuality is aligned to sexual attraction where individuals can identify themselves with a broad range of sexuality that is bisexual, gay or being lesbian. Sexuality can change over time in a person depending on the circumstances surrounding him or her. It may be affected by the social circle and emotional imbalances that may occur in an individual. Interestingly there exists sexual inequality among many societies in the world. As observed, many societies encourage men to have multiple sex partners but forbid it in women. Moreover, pre-marital sex is promoted in men, but women are flaunted if they participate in pre-marital sex. Across the globe, Western Europe has embraced certain norms in sexuality such as homosexuality whereas African society embraces a negative attitude towards the same.
