What´s Screen Time?

Technology has consumed this generation to believe we need to rely on it. Although technology has helped us to save more lives than in previous decades. The technology that is affecting us are the ones with screens. These devices are useful for entertainment, news, communication, and to learn. They are powerful devices that can change someone's life in both a negative and positive effect. It can be easily obtained and used by anyone at anytime if accessible. Looking at screens are a waste of time.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children under the age of two years have no screen time, with the exception of video chatting. Children younger than two benefit from a hands-on learning approach, therefore, introducing them to a digital device takes away time they need to be socially interactive to develop their cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional skills. By the age of two, and through the preschool aged years it is recommended that children have no more than 1 ½ hours of screen time per week, and that screen time should be monitored to ensure it is educational as well as age appropriate. Technology has been part of our daily live more frequently than before. Screen time has been more popularly used on kids and adolescents. On a daily bases many kids seem to spend more time inside on their tablets, instead of having to spend time with other kids. This is a problem that is becoming more popular over the years,on whether kids need to spend that much time on technology or not. Parents either seem to have strict technology usage, or they either don’t. There has always been a huge controversy with experts, who either think that screen time is beneficial or could cause problems later on in life. There are many views towards this topic, from hurting kids brains, to helping them during school, and socially.

“Screen-time Is Making Kids Moody, Crazy and Lazy” is an article about how electronics affect a person’s behavior, more specifically, a child’s behavior. Dunckley states, “…interactive screen-time is more likely to cause sleep, mood, and cognitive issues, because it’s more likely to cause hyper arousal and compulsive use.” She lists six reasons how electronics alter our moods.

Many parents today rely on screen time to soothe and occupy their kids. Children tend to develop better hand-eye coordination with the use of technology. Another benefit includes children having a higher capacity for visual attention.

There have been a multitude of studies in recent years on the subject of screen time and the effects it can have on children of all ages. Previously, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that children from 0-2 years of age not be exposed to any screen time at all (American Academy of Pediatrics, [AAP], 2016). This included television, video games, smart phones, tablets, movies and computers. The AAP has recently changed its recommendation, though, stating that “Some media can have educational value for children starting at around 18 months of age, but it 's critically important that this be high-quality programming, such as the content offered by Sesame Workshop and PBS.” (AAP, 2016). The recommendation for children ages 2-5 is still the same, at one hour of high quality programming a day, and for children age 6 and older, to use consistent limits on the

When it comes to children spending time infront of screens such as tv's, tablets, I pads, cell phones and video games it can be a difficult argument for parents. Parents can widely dissagree on their perspectives. Making this a difficult topic for them to come to solution on.

In the issue of screen time for children, I think it is not as relevant as people make it out to be. While time in front of a screen is a contributing factor, it is only one of many. The real concern should be with content and how children react to that content, and also the level of parental guidance.

The effect that screentime and electronic use has on children has been investigated and questioned since these technologies have been available. As time goes by, this effect has become more clear despite the trend of younger and younger children using electronics at an early age. We should moderate and limit the effect that excessive screentime may have on our children, because it has been shown to be linked to reduced sleep and depression; the 7.5 daily hours children spend behind a screen cut heavily into playtime; and electronics don't provide a fully suitable substitute for the benefits of regular play.

I agree with children and their screen time becasue every year the electronics devices improves and helps children in ways even parents couldn't.

Another harmful consequence of too much of screen time is that it damages overall development of a child. This is because of the intellectual, socialism and creativity . A mother would not be able to witness all these factors, if her child is glued to the monitor all day long .In " Your 2 Year Old: Motor, Cognitive, Verbal and Social Skills " Maureen Ryan (2016) writes that children's understanding at the age of two is increasing day by day. Parents need to Develop their child in a way as they grow up, children would be able to remember all the good times they have spent it together . But, if they don’t take care of their own child , the child would miss all the entertainment in life .

The negative characteristics of too much screen time can also lead into a mental and physical toll on our children, confusing their natural body clocks.

On one hand, you know that capturing monsters in Pokemon Go or taking a portal to the Nether in Minecraft is probably not the healthiest way for your children to spend the afternoon. On the other hand, they are so happy and content when they are bathed in the glow of a smartphone, tablet, or TV. And not all of those apps are harmful, right? What if they are watching educational programming? Can screen time ever be beneficial? Screen time has been a catalyst for argument in many homes as screens are becoming more and more prevalent, some would say necessary, in today’s society.
