Technology is both a blessing and a curse. It may allow us to view and know things never imaginable but it also can cause us harm, that before the 21st century we never thought would be a problem. In today's society there is no escape from technology. We are completely submerged in our iPhone, ipads, computers, and gaming systems. These gadgets give us the opportunity to be connected to each other and the rest of the world at all times. But, this is not a glorious step in history. Technology blinds us from the real world. As John Tudor said, “Technology makes it possible for people to gain control over everything, except technology.” We may run our lives with the help of our iPhones and computers, but do these forms of technology in turn control us? At first glance these new advances are greater steps to making our lives easier. But, when examined closely a large portion of technology is the cause of many problems in our society.
Being an addict to drug, alcohol or a substance abuse is a life-threat situation that will blind us from life great offer and to lose a piece of our self we love; similar overlook the importance of families, friends and the fundamental interpersonal skills we lack because of technology. As humans, we are consumed to social media standards, it’s a trigger for instance-to update our Facebook’s status with its famous line “What’s on your mind” from our computer or record a fifteen-second video to express how we feel on Snapchat from a smart phone or cover a popular song to get recognize on YouTube.
Furthermore, texting has reduced the need for actual human contact. The notion to simply type a message, and send it immediately is appealing, and less time consuming, which is why it's exceedingly popular. The reason texting could be disadvantages is a lack of clarity, because you can't convey emotions with typed words, so messages could be misinterpreted. More importantly, texting is also quite damaging to the users eyes, especially after long periods of time. Something to further suppress the need for human contact, would be the creation of computers. Computers have been especially damaging in limiting human contact, especially amongst youth. The original purpose of computers was to be an effective work tool. Nowadays, computers have served the purpose of supplying the user with any information in the world. These sites can range from educational, to controversial. Specifically, sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, have created a fake sense of reality. Youth feel the need to express themselves openly on the Internet, rather than in the company of their friends and family. This could get dangerous, especially on social media. Technology surrounds us. Like water in the ocean, people are swimming in technology each and every day. From the radio playing a favorite song to a text received about the results of a game, people use technology constantly. However, there is a point at which people are overtaken by technology; when the wave engulfs us and there is no way out. People are becoming more and more dependent on technology. Ever since technology began heavily integrating itself into society, many major uses have developed, but at a cost that brings on dangerous side effects, both mental and physical, as shown by the potential Y2K bug, that will continue unless active measures are sought out by those so dependent on technology.
As far back as I can remember my family and I have taken advantage of technology. The types of technology have changed over the years, along with our usage and dependence on it. Technology is a fundamental part of our lifestyle, including both work and play. What is interesting is that we also have many friends who use very little technology in their day-to-day living. This drastic difference makes one wonder how necessary the technology really is, and whether or not our dependence on it is healthy in the long run. It is really easy to just get caught up in using technology without thinking about the pros and cons.
The main cause of the texting craze is the ability to send and receive quick messages. It is simpler than making a phone call and getting caught up in a conversion when your time is limited. It also allows you to share and respond instantly so there is a sense of always being connected to peers. Texting has become more popular than talking on the phone or even face to face. So much so that “texting has become the way that adolescents forge social bonds, and texting between adolescents often serves to promote social cohesion in peer groups”
Technology has changed so many of the ways in which we live our lives, from the invention of the wheel to the advanced systems we use and take for granted everyday. Technology was once taboo in most house holds while people still clung to the idea that life was built on life experiences. Nicholas Carr stated in, Is Goggle making us stupid? "Back in the fourth century, BCE, Plato complained that writing (then a fairly new technology) was destroying peoples memory, yet he wrote dozens of books. For half a century, television has been accused of rotting our brains and making us fat and lazy, but most people depend on it for info, news and entertainment." Technology has changed our understanding of the way things work and
