When I think of the phrase “workshop leader” I think of someone who leads students who are struggling in their main class and helps them through the assignments a step at a time. I believe that a workshop leader must be confident in themselves and be able to take the time to find activities for their students to do while still teaching them how to successfully complete the task that they have been given. A workshop leader for an English course should be able to lead students through MLA format and how to form a perfect paragraph that will satisfy their teacher’s requirements. As a workshop leader, myself, however, I do not think that I did any of these things to help my students succeed.I took this workshop course as a last class before …show more content…
I agreed with her and told her my game plan of having the students bring their papers to workshop for us to discuss and for me to constructively criticize their work. She and I both thought that this semester would go by fast and smoothly, without many hiccups. As the semester progressed, I had a few good workshop days. For instance, for the first Task, I had them bring a few copies of their papers to workshop and trade papers with a partner. While they read each other’s papers, I instructed them to find at least one praise, one question, and one wish. After we finished reading the papers, we took turns sharing our PQW responses. However, I did not let them just give short responses. When they gave me a response, such as “I liked the beginning,” I prompted them to give me more detail of what they liked about the beginning of said paper. This had a positive effect on the workshop, because, while each of them were nervous, they gave great responses to each other. While there were a few successful workshops, there were also failed workshops. I believe that we had more bad workshops than good ones. On more than one occasion, my students have come to workshop with no resources and no motivation. One instance that I can recall is the week after Spring Break. Before Spring Break, the students were instructed by
A leader is described as a person who guides or directs a group, but I believe it is so much more than that. A leader is a person that inspires people to do good and does good themselves. Due to my extensive volunteer work, I believe that I qualify as a fairly good leader. My outstanding leadership is shown clearly in my participation in community theatre. I have participated in the theatre community at Top Hat Productions, a theatre company located near me, for a couple years. My leadership in this company is shown through my ability to get people involved and my own participation.
Today I had an appointment with my upper division writing professor, Dr. Emily Foss. I met with her to review my coursework, and to address some concerns. The first part of the 20 minute meeting went fairly well. She had not taken the time to collect collect some early writing steps from us, not were we required to upload these steps online. There was also ambiguity about the due date of our last paper. All of those things were ironed out in fairly short order.
When classes first began in August, Professor Birnbaum informed our class about the four essays in which we would write throughout the course and be graded on strictly. In addition, we would also get into small groups weekly to gather ideas and improve our paper. Nevertheless, the first essay began. We were told as a class to write an essay on a personal experience in which meant greatly to us, so I wrote about a speech I gave in front of 700 people. I spent less than three days working on the essay with only one revision. In result, I received an outstanding grade of a 93, boosting my confidence in Professor Birnbaum’s class greatly. She commented on the paper that I needed to work on my verb tense, sentence structure, and mechanics that distract readers through the paper. In addition, she also let the entire class know that she would not be lenient in the next three papers and
As a leader, one must be kind and firm, making sure what needs to be done is done. As a leader, one must inspire their charges to finish the project completely and to do their best. I have been a leader in our school’s Journalism (Yearbook) class as an Layout Editor. I have made sure my staff has been consistent in their work and make their deadline on time.
Throughout this entire course we have learned many concepts and strategies to synthesize and use leadership as a means of working in a group setting. These concepts allowed us to learn not only how to lead other
What makes me a leader? In class, I enjoy helping other students with the work they are struggling with to guide them in their work. During labs, I usually step up and begin the lab, and assign jobs to everyone, including myself, in order to complete the lab successfully. With this, I also know that I do not know everything and am willing to ask for help. In other group based activities, the process
“She was able to answer all our questions about the subject and provided us with information and resources to further our learning. I felt prepared for the next school year.”
This was a particularly instructive task for us the teachers as the learner is suddenly on his/her own rather than in a group as they had been in the normal workshop sessions. As the teacher we had few surprises with the performance of the learners but there were one or two early on. These were mainly because it was possible during the workshop sessions to take a back seat and let your group do most of the work. Because of this they were unsure when it came to their assessment which is only to be expected.
I found this workshop to be beneficial because I learned different strategies to teach and to make a difference in the way students learn particularly in reading. I also learned how to make a lesson plan using the elements of Metacognition. We also did a lot of cooperative learning and how to make the lessons engaging and interesting to students. I also
Nobody in my group except Luke impressed me, Luke look charge and formulated all of our opinions into a concise presentation. I don’t think any other groups changed my mind on the topics because the majority of groups just threw around statistics and had no logic behind their opinions and many
The in-class workshops helped the most because I was able to get multiple different view points instead of just mine. When we work shopped my paper I was really nervous to hear what everyone had to say. After the class started to rip my paper apart, they began to point out all the areas that I did
For the second workshop I went to a presentation from the author of What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20. Her name was Tina Seelig and she gave a presentation on what she now knows as a fifty year old person. The name of the presentation was What I Now Know at 50. In this presentation she spoke about the four key concept that is needed for success. These concepts were Imagination, Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She explained how imagination is needed be create an innovation to someday make it into a product. In order to become an entrepreneur this is what we need. She also gave us an example of these concepts being applied. I liked how she also told us that one solution could have a great number of procedures that can be used to accomplish
For Evelyn I think working one on one really helped, she was able to really discuss with me what she was writing as she was writing. I have noticed that often during whole group she tends to get bored and start to space out and while she is quick to refocus, I really wanted to give her something more engaging and active than what she normally gets on a day to day basis.
I believe that to be a good leader doesn’t necessarily define as someone who sets a goal and directs people to achieve it, but as someone who may have to adapt to change based off their surroundings and situations. A leader should be someone who is able to guide with not only direction but also logic, understanding, and an open mind. Oskar Schindler proved with continued leadership that even the most dismal situations may be able to change your values and based off those values change your actions and the direction in which you choose to lead and how you influence.
Being able to lead a group or someone is a very powerful action. Being a leader in general is very powerful. Leadership is an art that is painted, sculpted, and displayed in all sorts of ways. There are many different styles of leadership that correspond with different tasks. From transformational leadership to laissez-faire leadership, there are various styles throughout the continuum. A transformational leader is one of the best, more successful leadership style. When going down the continuum, the leadership styles only become less effective. Everyone also falls in distinctive categories when it comes to leading others. The leadership style that is displayed depends on the person leading and those who are being led along with the task.
