When writing an essay, especially one to convince others of your competence, it is important to have a central point in mind. Throwing in idle points here and there cause the writer to appear unorganized and sloppy, not at all what a college is looking for. If my central theme is passion then both the introductory and closing sentences should in some way have a connection to passion. The meat of the essay should have evidence for the referenced passion. Closing the paragraph out explaining that passion is central to your experience with individuals with sexually problematic behaviors keeps the message consistent. A central theme may be hard to locate at times, but it is the first step to writing a coherent essay. “Given my expertise, I have been trained to use de-escalation and therapeutic techniques to return a youth to baseline behavior.” This is the first sentence of the paragraph. As a reader I will take from this that you intend to write about returning youth to baseline behavior for the duration of the paragraph and that you will further delve into de-escalation and therapeutic techniques to do such. It is also unwise to refer to your expertise when you only hold a bachelor’s degree, regardless of how much experience you have. (Not devaluing a bachelor’s at all, just saying that “expertise” implies a master’s level education or higher.) “Working at Indian Oaks Academy has given me so much experience and has open my eyes and really shown me that there is a lack of
