In Revelation chapters 17 and 18 we read about the great whore named Babylon who sits on many waters and is the mother of all harlots. The imagery in which the apostle John uses to describe Babylon has very significant meaning, in particular for the church as she approaches the end of the age. It is of paramount importance to understand who this Babylon is and how she affects the life of every believer.
Throughout the ages there have been many attempts to identify Babylon. Most have agreed that she is the Roman Catholic Church (in particular the Vatican), even to the point of identifying the Pope as the anti-Christ himself. Others have suggested that Babylon is not a religious structure but more likely political, pointing to the

They build lives for themselves without the reality of the Creator. In their own delusions they believe that they themselves are "creators". They are in charge of their own destinies. They set up moral and ethical standards of life which cannot be violated because of "personal rights", while at the same time enforcing those rights on the wider community and insisting that everyone "submit" to those standards. They even go so far as to take it upon themselves to not only decide when to give life, but when and how to take it also. THEY HAVE BECOME
"GODS" WHILE AT THE SAME TIME COMPLETELY DISREGARDING THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE GOD!
Likewise, many "religious/spiritual ones" combine spiritual laws to natural ones but with one difference - they become "gods" not only of this world, but also the next. They actually "de-throne" God by living independently of the one true

On the surface there is an appearance of piety, but underneath quite often lies the hidden enemy of pride expressing itself through man's unsanctioned intellect and emotions. This is the

Which would you value more-knowledge, or truth? Stephen Vincent Benét explores this question in his short story “By the Waters of Babylon”. However, Benét doesn’t answer this question exactly, instead “By the Waters of Babylon” focuses more on a singular theme that knowledge and truth are intertwined. Benét brings the reader into a post-apocalyptic world where humans have resorted to a more primitive state after the “Great Burning”(310). Now the only humans left with any knowledge are the Priests, and John happens to be the son of one. John has been exposed to the only remaining knowledge that he’s been told his society has at that the time and now quest for more. This burning desire that John has to know more of
In Babylon Revisited by F Scott Fitzgerald time is used to reinforce his theme of one’s past being inescapable. Through time it is seen where the main character Charlie’s past comes to haunt him in his present. References are made in time flying by and being lost due to the past indiscretions.
The civilization that flourished in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Palestine were located in river valleys or along the Mediterranean coast. These civilizations developed highly complex cultures that shared many common characteristics. Some of the characteristics that they shared were justice, cultural diffusion, architecture and inventions. Because of these characteristic they achieved and contributed a lot to society as well as to future civilizations.
Although they perceive themselves as gods – they are just beings who are incredibly more advanced than we are from a technological and intellectual basis.
The cultures of Mesopotamia and Egypt developed into such successful civilizations for various reasons. Mesopotamia is located in the middle of the Fertile Crescent, which is made up of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Egypt is located in Africa and has natural barriers that protect it. Those barriers are the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Nile River, and various mountains.
When drastic times occur and sweep one of everything they own, do they have a plan of action? Will they be prepared for a life without power, resources, and stability? Many times when people are faced with this situation they find themselves unprepared and unable to live in such conditions. They lose the connections with the world, the water they drink is likely to get contaminated, and the scarcity of goods is a threat to themselves and anyone left alive. Everywhere around them there is death and destruction leaving them isolated in their own dystopia. Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon illustrates a nuclear bomb simulation. In such a way, he gives the readers a taste of isolation and survival needs when facing such drastic times.
The author further uses the destruction of Babylon to give instructions to Jews as to how they should behave under Roman rule, warning against assimilation of Jews into Roman society. In Revelation, the author quotes God as saying, “come out of here, my people, so that you do not take part in her sins and so that you do not share in her plagues” (Revelation 18.4). The authors use the word of God in an apocalyptic situation to caution against joining in Roman society, an empire which the authors argue is one of sin and which will ultimately be cast down by God.
The main theme in the short story “Babylon Revisited” is that you can’t repeat the past. Charlie has a lot of hope for the future, but his guilt from the past catches up with him. He tries to forget about the Paris he used to know, but memories from the past haunts him throughout the story. His past is inescapable and he has to pay great debts when the party comes to an end. “Babylon Revisited”, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1931. The story is greatly affected by the time period it was written in, and by what was going on in Fitzgerald’s life.
