Abraham Lincoln’s contribution to the United States is so grand and captivating, that he is deservingly recognized as America’s greatest president. For example, he abolished slavery, led America through the Civil War, and prevented the Union from splitting apart. Abraham Lincoln was one the best leaders and commanders this country has ever had. And that wasn’t just noticed by a few people, it was noticed by many. Frederick Douglass describes Lincoln in his “Oration in Memory of Abraham Lincoln” and being “swift, zealous, radical, and determined.” He ended his statement by saying “his memory will be precious forever” (Document K). Another quality that made Lincoln such a great leader was that he thought of the country as a whole before himself.

A few of his quotes being, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” This quotation is so important because even after Lincoln gained his power and fame, he stayed an honest, trustworthy man, and he didn’t get power hungry like many presidents in the past have. A few more of Lincoln’s famous quotations are, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be,” and “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” These quotes by Lincoln are so powerful because they show that he wanted everyone to live their lives to the fullest, and to be happy. They demonstrate that he didn’t want the people of America, or himself to do anything wrong, he just wanted America to live its life to the fullest and make everything count. Abraham Lincoln will forever be embedded in history for delivering a presidency filled with work that was geared towards the best interest of the American people. Lincoln took the seat at a very difficult time in America’s early history, which was the Civil War. Lincoln made sure that after the war, that America rebuilds itself. One thing from Lincoln’s iconic speech that is not forgotten is “all men are created equal”. In today’s society, all people are granted the same freedoms and equalities. It could be said that Lincolns speech though was given in 1863 was the start of the Civil Rights movement in a sense. Even though it was only around 270 words, The Gettysburg Address was a speech with many messages8. These powerful words, spoken by an influential president, was sure to promote change and equality throughout America eventually.

One reason I that this book is a great read is that it is easily a readable book for any person who is looking for a general reference for presidential history. The unique perspective given by the wide verity of authors provide the reader with a great historical importance that each president had on the office is another aspect that makes this book worth reading. Finally, the most surprising aspect that made this book a decent read is that the authors did somewhat succeed on their attempt to provide a well-balanced and un biased ranking of the presidents through survey of professional scholars. Although, there are a few more aspects to this historical and political work that makes it a great read there are flaws that make this book’s ranking of the presidents a little questionable. The first and most likely the hardest to see is that the many authors that wrote the essays of each president did not agree with the survey results while some did. The second flaw is that not every president up to George W. Bush is represented on the ranking appendix on pages elven and twelve. The authors mention that presidents George W. Bush, the ninth president William Henry Harrison, and 20th president James Garfield is not being represented on the chart (pg. 12). George W. Bush not being the chart is understandable because this survey and information gathering did take place before his election, but the other two are being left out for the reasons of short terms (pg. 12). President Abraham Lincoln was one of the most honest and most popular of all of the presidents. For a large part of that presidency, however, he was only president of half of the country due to the nature of the American Civil War. Throughout his time in office, he was able to deliver many great speeches, of which include the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. In both of these orations, he uses primarily uses ethical appeals to assist in the deliverance of and strengthen the main themes.

The first reason that President Lincoln was the best president I because he broke the chains from the slave. With out this movement,, our society would not be nearly as developed as it is today. Lincoln took the first step in making equality a reality for African Americans and minorities. Without this first step, this country would still be in the process of making equality.

Throughout America's history, George Washington is considered one of the best presidents of the United States, considering the challenges he faced with foreign and domestic affairs. In the history of the United States of America many men have made contributions to our nation, whether it be small or large. Our founding fathers John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington helped give birth to our nation by successfully guiding us through a revolution and our country’s infancy. Franklin D Roosevelt led the nation through a war on two fronts eventually defeating the Axis powers of Nazi Germany and Japan. The list could go on and on about legendary men that made important contributions to the United States of America, however one man that seems to always come out on top of all these men is none other than our sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln. This man guided a nation through a Civil War that saw six hundred and twenty thousand people die. Signed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring “that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." And gave one of the most famous speeches in American history with is Gettysburg Address. The amount of things Lincoln accomplished in his lifetime could go on and on, but one thing is for certain he was one of the greatest Americans to ever live. However what type of man was Lincoln? Noble? Driven? Stephen B Oates gives us the best interoperation of the man Lincoln really was in his book With Malice Toward None.

We have had many important leaders, men that did not shy away from anything, and did what ever they could for the betterment of this country. Among them are Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. Even though all these men were great, you may ask "Who was the best?". This is a very difficult question to answer; since all these men had different struggles and concepts they had to face. One man, however, stood out to me; that man is Abraham Lincoln.
