Many people do not know the reason why World War 1 started. In 2012, a survey done by Daily Mail UK showed that two-thirds of young people did not know when World War 1 started. The article explained that many did not know why the war started. After and during World War 1 the war was known as “The Great War” and “ The War to End all Wars”. Even though a nickname for the war was “ The War to End all Wars”, today many know the next war was only 21 years away. World War 1 had three main causes: Imperialism was growing internationally in the early 1900s, the creation of alliances intensified in this power hunger era time, and finally the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. During World War 1 many nations and countries were trying to build an empire and have the strongest military. This is known as Imperialism which is a policy of extending a country’s power and impact through military and colonization of other nations. Nationalism is often driven from imperialism. Nationalism is having pride in one’s country, and because many big nations had nationalism it encouraged the nation to have an empire. Because of Germany and Britain were growing larger they thought they had the best military and were the superior to other nations. They both believed they were indomitable. Not only were alliances being created, but many nations had secret alliances with countries. These already existing alliances brought other nations into the war because many nations felt obliged to protect their alliances in the war. The alliances also made the war escalated more rapidly because if one member of an alliance declared war on other nation the alliances with the alliance that declared war had to go into war against the other nation.
