Students today are overwhelmed by the amount of homework they are doing. Schools are giving kids so much homework it's causing them to be stressed and lose sleep, lose their family and free time, and it's causing kids to have health problems.
The amount of homework being piled on kids is causing stress and sleep lost. It's also catching teachers attentions like Diane Garfield, a fifth-grade teacher in San Francisco who says “I believe that we’re stressing children out.” ( greatschools.org). The pressure brought onto kids about completing homework is often too much. (wsuscholarlyediting.org). As teenink.com states, “American students should get less homework because too much can cause a great deal of stress, too much time is required

“Homework is like the extension of school where it is no longer kept out of family time. It’s like an imposter in the child’s life.” (wsuscholarlyediting.org) “Students are working more than the recommended amount of time on homework, and this takes away from family time and free time.” (greatschools.org). Homework is making it so kids can't spend time with their families or have some time for themselves.
Some people might argue that homework is good practice for students to do at home and it helps with how they do in school. Well sure it might be practice but is good practice really supposed to take away more than it helps you gain. “Our findings on the effects of homework challenge the traditional assumption that homework is inherently good,” “wrote Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and a co-author of a study published in the Journal of Experimental Education” (news.stanford.edu). If you really want to help kids then lessen the amount of homework required of them.
So is this really good practice for students or is it just more work that's costing kids their time, health, and
Having a lot of homework put a lot of stress on kids. It puts a lot of stress on kids because their grades
Homework has been around for many years, and parents have had many questions and concerns about the impact it has on their children. Kate McReynolds states in her article Homework that, “In 1957, the Soviet launch of Sputnik challenged the intellectual and military might of the United States. The New York Times ran a series of articles describing the Soviet educational system as superior to the United States’ system. Congress passed the National Defense Education Act and America’s youngsters were charged with restoring the nation’s competitive edge” (2). This means that schools are under the pressure to make sure their students excel and work extremely hard. So by doing so, they assign homework, which will progress to other issues for the students.
In the article “ When Homework Takes Over,” by Merri Rosenberg, she quotes ‘ A new study finds that heavy homework takes negative impacts on the lives of high school students, resulting excess stress, physical problems, and little time for leisure. This shows that excessive homework can lead to high stress levels and physical problems for teens and children. Rosenberg also states ‘Teachers handing out more assignments than ever is making kids stressed, their sleep
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is
The younger generations have been assigned an extreme amount of homework in school. The homework has overwhelmed many of them making them dislike school or even wondering the point of it. Education today is taught on the same level to all students but every child is different on their ways of learning, their attitude towards it is different. It is sad to know that even an Act created by a president titled “No Child Left Behind” has failed in an article by Kenneth Jost critics say that law has hurt education by overemphasizing standardized tests and unfairly labeling schools as underperforming without providing necessary help to improve. Students should be taught in a group and one on one at their own pace not the pace that some teacher’s paper says. Today, schools are issuing an abundant amount of homework to pupils ones which has caused a lot of stress, a dislike of learning, and even have caused grades to drop.
Excessive amounts of homework puts stress on students, and can lead to health issues. When homework is loaded onto a student every night in each class, they can become quite overwhelmed. When students have anxiety and stress, their schoolwork is affected negatively. “Stress causes lack of sleep, slipping grades, fatigue, unhealthy eating habits, and many more factors” (“Should Students Get Less Homework”). Approximately 80% of students don’t get the recommended amount of sleep each night. According to a 2006 poll, “At least 28% of students fall asleep in class, and around 22% fall asleep while doing homework” (“Should Students Get Less Homework”). Some students talked about being so overwhelmed with all of the work they got at school, that they became depressed. In some cases, depression can lead to suicide. Students can have nervous breakdowns and can make homework difficult to complete. Also, students
Homework is stressful. It gives you headaches. The stress continues on to your everyday lives. If you did homework and it was stressful, it could carry on to your everyday lives. It becomes so stressful the student gives up. Homework is too stressful on kids. Some days you have homework from every class. Kids might not understand it. Due dates are stressful as well.
In the beginning I believed homework was in no way helpful to kids, but my opinion slightly changed after reading the article “Would Kids Be All Right Without Homework?” by Susan Schwartz. The article explains how homework can help children learn if given in moderate amounts. For example, David Mcleod, father of a seven year old son, says through homework, ¨we could see what he was learning and what he was having trouble with¨ (Schwartz). I agreed that homework could give parents a better idea of what their children are doing in school, but sometimes it is too much. To illustrate, David also tells an interviewer, ¨He'd [David's son] come home tired and hungry after being picked up from an after-school program some days as late as 6 p.m. That's a long day. Between dinner and homework, there was often little downtime before bedtime¨ (Schwartz). Although it is important for parents to be involved
There is a lot of pressure put on our students today. So many of them participate in some sort of extracurricular activity, or maybe even multiple activities. They could be in sports or a school club. Depending on their age, they might have a job, or if they are younger, they could be working for their family in a family business. You have children that live with separated parents and guardians so their time is split between family members. Some of the students in the system are even in foster care. We have disadvantaged students in our schools that do not have the greatest home life and have other things going on in their lives. On top of all of this, they are expected to succeed in the classroom as well. They are expected to get good grades and to excel at standardized tests and so they are assigned homework. According to the PISA homework article we read, "students spend more of their time doing homework or other study set by their teachers than they spend in other after-school learning activities". On average in 2012, students fifteen years of age were claiming that they were spending about five hours each week working on homework. That was five years ago. I am sure the number has increased since then. This homework article states that in most
Homework might appear to be beneficial when studies show students who do homework do better academically, however, there is a point at which homework has a negative effect on students. “The purpose of homework is to reinforce the learning that takes place in school or prepare children for forthcoming lessons, which in theory, sounds ideal. But, research on homework has indicated otherwise. Apparently, too much is detrimental to children” (Rajoo). The excessive homework that kids are being assigned is not helping
It’s all too apparent that homework must be cut since it can adversely influence the mental well-being of students. According to the article “Stanford Research Shows Pitfalls of Homework” by Clifton B. Parker, 89% of students reported homework was a stressor. 56% of students considered homework as a primary source of anxiety. It is clear that homework is causing worry for most students. This was proven In the piece “Homework vs. Sleep: A Cause of Stress in Teens (And Younger Kids)” by Craig Canapari MD. in this article it was reported about 15% of juniors and seniors had more than two hours of homework per night. Canapari also pointed to a study that found 90% of teenagers are not getting enough sleep because they have too much homework. This is significant because teenagers need sleep for their growth and development.
Have you ever heard your child complain that their school gives to much homework? Is your child losing sleep because of how much schoolwork they have? Have you noticed your child’s grades have been suffering? Well maybe you are on to something. Some kids may say that homework takes away their free time, or the school gives so much that it causes insane amounts of stress for them, and homework can even cause kids to get worse grades. These symptoms are all linked to too much schoolwork.
If kids are at home and need help who are they going to ask for help? This can not only endanger their knowledge by trying to figure by themselves (incorrectly), but it can also endanger their learning. From the article “ My Thoughts on homework” a principle says “More homework does not equal more learning.” Now a teacher from the article “ The potential harm of homework”has some thoughts “The pressure of having to complete homework every night is quite daunting for most children and they need time to refresh their minds and bodies.”.You can see that homework can be in the way of the child's learning with the teacher. These two articles both have school workers with their own opinion about homework not giving good benefits to a
As teachers excessive amounts of homework there is limited time to finish work for another class or study for another class. Whenever students actually do the unnecessary work and turn it in, it doesn't always get graded and it just causes stress on top of stress. Students are already not getting enough sleep with all six classes that they have. Yet homework is great for students it is very helpful for students for their classes, but at the same time they have so much excessive work that they have to finish it in such little time. CNN conducted a study last year that the impact of excessive homework on high schoolers included high stress levels, a lack of balance
More than 56% of high school students in the United States said that homework was their primary cause of stress (Strauss 2). Even though teachers and parents are seeing the negative effects of unreasonable amounts of homework, it is still being practiced. Excessive amounts of homework causes stress levels to increase, creates issues with health and sleep for high school students, and has a negative effects on family time and parents; therefore teachers should limit homework to only two hours or less per night for highschool students.
