Imagine spending your whole summer without going outside and enjoying the warmth of the sun. Imagine wasting all of your summer on your phone without your friends. Instead, you are on your computer playing the latest games, and have been addicted the past few days. Too much screen time can have negative consequences such as physical problems and difficulties in school; however, some state parks are trying to alleviate these problems by having kids develop a love for nature.

In an article titled, Replacing iPhones with Stargazing: State Parks Reach Out to Kids, teens spend an average of 7 hours a day on their electronics.This means that kids are less active than they need to be, which can result in increasing rates of obesity. This is a concern because if teens are spending many hours of their day on their electronics they are wasting valuable time that could be spent outside exercising, learning about nature, and how to appreciate nature. In the last 30 years, obesity has quadrupled in teens, and doubled in children. In 2012, over one-third of teens and children were obese or overweight. This is why state park officials are saying it's important they provide programs to encourage children to get outdoors and experience nature. If teens keep ignoring the outdoors and spend all of their time indoors, the amount of obese teens and children will increase very soon. On average, a teen spends about seven hours per day on their phone. However, screentime can impact you given much less time than that. For example, after I binge-watch my favorite T.V. show (on the Netflix app on my phone) or scroll through social media for just a few hours, I feel tired and irritated. The American Association of Pediatrics has recommended a limit of two hours of screen time per day for teenagers. But, at and after school kids are on their devices for homework and for educational purposes and other leisure activities. These students are on their computers for more than two hours going past the recommendation by doing only schoolwork. Because students are asked to use devices in school screen time should be increased to four hours a day.
My mom and dad are not attracted to their phones. For example they are only on their phone if they got a phone call, calling someone or texting. Some reasons that support my answer is that they give eye contact at the dinner table or talk to us about our day. Also when they're at a game watching T.V. or outside there not on there phone.

The only way we’ll get enough sleep is if we make ourselves to put our phone up. For as long as media has been in our society, parents have been concerned about the impact it may have on their children. The first example of this was in the 1920’s and 30’s as the popularity of movie viewing increased and “questions were raised and charges were made about the possible harmful effects on children” (7). Following movies, radio was then studied to make sure it was not having a negative effect on U.S. children. As new technology continues to be introduced into our society, the same concerns similar concerns are always voiced. Since the introduction of television into American homes in the late 1940’s and early 50’s, researchers have focused their efforts to find any correlation between screen time and its impact on children.

One reason people should limit screen time is because it can cause irregular sleep. First, whenever someone stays up late watching t.v or playing on electronics they are not getting enough sleep. In addition, when people are not getting enough sleep they are hurting their eyes and brains. According to the “Mayo Clinic Staff” if the human body does not get enough sleep it can affect brain electrical activity.
All in all, it is evident that children need to start to use their time wisely because the effects of this addiction can, and are, leading to real problems. These problems range from health dangers for the mind and body, to problems in school, to social communications. The effect of increasing times indoors and decreasing outdoor activities have been affecting childhood obesity in significant ways. Not only is it a health risk, but childhood obesity has become a serious long term physical health risk that can cause coronary heart disease, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, and certain cancers (Centers for Disease Control, 2007). One of the reasons for childhood obesity is due to the technology that has taken over the society mostly affecting the new generation, children. For example, Studies have shown that an average American child spends more times watching television which equals to 1,023 hours per year as well as the amount of “screen time” such as computer and video games that children experience per week is similar to their measure of body fat (Louv, 2005). As this statistics show children are not exposed to nature as much as they should be in their childhood years.
