I think that historically, we created labels for very specific identities, which led to a lot of social expectations and social ‘norms’ that people are perhaps only just realising that we don’t need to comply with and why Facebook are creating so many more options. In some respects, I feel that labels can help us to identify ourselves when communicating with others and can help us to explain who we are or even to find out who we are by looking at what we do and don’t comply with. However, I do feel that people are now a lot more open towards different identities and this can cause a lot of grey areas that we are only just finding terms for.
In today’s society, I feel that the amount of terms that we use to explain identity are so vast that
Identity is a group of characteristics, data or information that belongs exactly to one person or a group of people and that make it possible to establish differences between them. The consciousness that people have about themselves is part of their identity as well as what makes them unique. According to psychologists, identity is a consistent definition of one’s self as a unique individual, in terms of role, attitudes, beliefs and aspirations. Identity tries to define who people are, what they are, where they go or what they want to be or to do. Identity could depend on self-knowledge, self-esteem, or the ability of individuals to achieve their goals. Through self-analysis people can define who they are and who the people around them
Labeling is not the right thing to do, but it is necessary in order for people to find out who they are. Labeling is necessary for people to make friendships. The basis of friendships are to find people that have the same ideologies and personality types as you do. This would not be as easy to identify if it wasn’t for society putting labels on people. Even though labeling isn’t right, people are accustomed and comfortable with it because it allows people to be in their comfort zone. Labeling people also gives people a sense of
Identity is anything that can provide us with a way of answering what we are. I believe that there is a core basis of
I believe that it is both to our benefit and disadvantage that we have groups and labels in our school. Groups can be a good thing because they provide security for students that don’t always get along or feel comfortable with all the other students in the school and can help them improve how they view themselves mentally. The disadvantage of having a school that has labels and groups is people discriminate groups. Also, sometimes students label other students in bad ways due to the group they are associated with or make untrue assumptions because they only see from their own perspective. The difficult thing about grouping and labeling in high school is that students gradually form groups all through junior high and sometimes they begin to
Looking at the categorization of different peoples throughout history as well as the changes the labels they possess have gone through, as well as identifying labels used in a derogatory way today we can see that labels have
“’Identity has been increasingly used to refer to the social and historical make-up of a person, personality as a construct. Sometimes such identities are conceived narrowly psychological, individualist terms, as the cumulative result of personal experience and family history”
The world has become modern and global. Identification of the self is a complicated, though, an important problem of every individual. Self- identity is based on inner values and reflections on culture, politics and social interactions. The main point is that people label themselves to any particular group in the society (Worchel etc., 1998). According to Ferguson: “Identity commonly refers to which it makes, or is thought to make
Identity is something that some people have a really hard time with, deciding who you are or who you want to be seems like a simple task but for some the choice to choose who they want to be isn’t always their choice. James Paul Gee author of “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistic: Introduction” talks about identity and how people have different Discourses depending on what social situation a person is in. Gee created and described Discourse as “ ways of being in the world; they are forms of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, and social identities as well as gestures, body positions, and clothes”(Gee). Gee talks about how discourses are pretty much an “identity kit”, which means a person is able to take on different
Throughout my life, certain identities have remained consist. And these identities have come to shape my perspectives and my needs and wants within American culture. Typically, my social
There are millions of words across the globe that are used to describe people and uncover their identity, but what is identity? How can you begin to describe something that varies so greatly from one human being to another? Can you create a universal meaning for a word describing human concepts that people often fail to define for themselves? Of course there isn't one definition to define such a word. It is an intricate aspect of human nature, and it has a definition just as complex.
Labels are put on jars, boxes, and crates, but they are put on people as well. But who made these labels? The answer is us. Previous generations pass on these labels to stamp on people, whether it be race, culture, or what they wear to school. We are taught to make these labels by society, but eventually the labels on objects are broken, so why can’t ours’ be broken? When we buy a shirt we take the tag off and put it in our dresser. We don’t leave one shirt laying around with a big tag still on it. How do we pull this tag off of ourselves and have a more tolerant world, and what kind of labels are being used now? To find some answers to these we will look at my personal experiences, examples in society, and what a world would look like
There are various kinds of identity (individualized or shared) that people are expected to possess. (Hollinger, 2004) namely; personal identity which is known as a
In recent years, identity has been open to discussion and reflection. One's identity has now been subject to change. There are still major cultural categories of identity, for example:
Though identity suggests to an aspect of individuality it is really a result of socialization. Identity is how we see
In general we differentiate between two “kinds” of identity. On the one hand there is the so called social identity, which stresses self-interpretation as a member of a certain social group and on the other hand there is the personal identity, which puts it´s emphasis on individuality and distinctiveness. This distinction is widely known as “patchwork-identity”. Both identities are only a subgroup of many different subjectively interpreted identities that everyone of us has innate.
