If you live in the town of Verona, and haven’t heard about the conflict between the Montagues and the Capulets, you probably live in a cave. These two families have been in a seemingly constant brawl for decades and have shown zero signs of slowing down anytime soon. One obvious question that should be clear still remains: Why are the families fighting?
One of the most commonly believed reasons that the families have such bad blood is because over 65 years ago, when supposedly Romeo’s great uncle, Stefano Montague, murdered Tybalt’s grandpa, Alessandro Capulet. The suspected motive for Stefano to kill Alessandro was that a few hours earlier, Sofia Rossi had broken up with Stefano because she was in love with Alessandro. It is suggested that

Romeo and Juliet is conflict and love. Conflict and love are both shown through characterization in all of the characters. In the beginning, we see Juliet 's character as a little young child who obeys her family duties. When she meets, Romeo, her character is taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. Juliet 's character is the source of conflict and we see this through her developing actions. Romeo creates Juliet into this powerful young women. Romeo is so important to Juliet that she does not want to loose him. Conflict begins to arise when things actually take off. Once they are together on the balcony, is when they both realize that they are meant for each other. That true love is true and that they are destined for the stars. True love is
Romeo and Juliet is a story based on conflict. The conflict in the story is Capulet against Montague. From ancient times, the two families have held grudges against each other. As the book states. “Two households, alike in dignity...from ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean (1.Prologue.1-4).” The grudge between the two families has led to fighting and even death.
Throughout Romeo and Juliet the theme of conflict is conveyed in many forms, mostly through physical violence; reflected in the era of the Renaissance where there was political turmoil and many European nations were at war. Shakespeare presents the theme in other forms as well; family versus family, sacred versus profane, parent versus child and language versus inner conflict. Conflict is a key in the structure of the play; it is highlighted in the beginning, middle and end. As an audience we are constantly being reminded of conflict which is reflected within the era the play was written in. The Renaissance was the 'rebirth ' of classical learning and was also the time when Science challenged many traditional Christian beliefs which resulted in Catholics fighting Protestants; the Gunpowder plot and the Spanish Armada. Shakespeare chose to dramatise conflict as it was the context in which he was writing plays. It is therefore arguable that this period was characterised by irreconcilable opposites in politics, religion and art. Nothing in the world can exist without its opposite- just as love cannot exist without hate, violence cannot exist without peace.
Secondly, the ‘ancient grudge’ between the two household is an aspect of fate that can be deemed responsible for the lovers’ deaths. Shakespeare describes the feud between the Montagues and Capulets as ancient, meaning it has been going on for a very long time. Consequently, there were ongoing brawls occurring in the streets of Verona and as a result of this feud many characters are driven to extreme behaviours, including Tybalt and Mercutio. If this ancient grudge had not existed then there would be no reason for them to have a duel, however, as it did exist they had no other choice. Tybalt is furious that Romeo, a Montague, had come into the Capulet household and wanted to take action. He decided to duel with Romeo but as he didn’t want to Mercutio accepted the offer. This specific duel between Tybalt and Mercutio was the undoing of the lovers’ lives. After Tybalt had killed Mercutio, Romeo felt pity and sought revenge and ended up killing Tybalt
Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was a Capulet and the families’ feud meant that the two could never be together. This is shown in this quote, “My only love sprung from my only hate! / Too early seen unknown, and known too late!’ (5.3.295-299). In this scene, Juliet complains about Romeo being a Montague. She wishes that he wasn’t so that they could freely be together. Also, both families and their servants would always pick fights on the streets of Verona. One of these fights would result in Romeo being banished from Verona. In a scene of the play, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin decides to pick a fight with Romeo and his friend Mercutio in the middle of the street. Romeo tries to stop the fight because he is now related to Tybalt through his marriage to Juliet. This is shown in the following quote where Romeo tries to keep the peace, “Draw Benvolio, beat down their weapons. / Gentlemen, for shame! / ... / Forbid this bandying in Verona’s streets” (3.1.381-384), but no one listens to him and Tybalt ends up killing Mercutio. Romeo has no choice but to kill Tybalt for revenge which leads to the Prince banishing Romeo. Without the feud, Romeo and Juliet would not have had to keep their love a secret and, the fight that resulted in Romeo’s banishment would never have happened. This is why the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues is responsible for Romeo
The prologue states that “Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona Where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny”(DBQ:Who’s to blame? Prologue) Now this means that this feud between families has been going on for quite some time. The feud is a major cause of these deaths because if they would have gotten along they would not have Mercutio and Tybalt dead. The feud also caused Romeo and Juliet to have a secret wedding in Friar Lawrence’s cell.
To begin with to the statement made earlier about the claim that the Montague's and Capulet's were responsible for the death of their children. If both families didn’t have an ancient grudge bot4h of the children wouldn’t have died. The both families had an ongoing grudge that didn’t allow them to be married to one family to the other. In document A, “Two Households”, it states in the third line “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny.” Proving that both families had or have a grudge and that made the turn into a war. Making both households have a fight. Finally, if anyone had any contact with the opposing family they will be killed probably making Romeo and Juliet very scared to be together.
In the play Romeo and Juliet, there were two familial forces that led to the couple’s deaths. The feuding families were Montague’s and Capulets.
The feud between the Capulets and the Montagues was the root of these tragic events. It caused the death of the young couple because the centuries old hate caused every issue that arose. No issues, fights, or deaths would have occurred if the feud did not fuel them. For example, it led to the fight that banishèd Romeo, caused Friar’s flawed plan, and ultimately led to the two lovers suicide. In addition, the feud against the family names was the only reason Romeo and Juliet’s love was only frowned upon.
Violence throughout the city of Verona between two prominent families: The Montagues and The Capulets, ending in the death of the two star crossed lovers. The play “Romeo and Juliet were written by William Shakespeare. During a party hosted by the high up family the Capulets, these kids fell in love. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, the plot being fueled by the “ancient grudge” (Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare 2) between two families: Montague and Capulet. The reason for the feud is unknown throughout the entire play and Shakespeare never reveals it. Many theories have been formed, including the most popular one that the feud began so many years ago that the families don’t remember. But this is just one of the variations because in every play the motives for the feud changes, fluctuating between money and race. This is believed because of the reasons stated before: the origin of the feud is never mentioned.
The feud between the families of Montague and Capulet affected the relationship of Romeo and Juliet and that results in the couple’s tragic deaths.
Throughout the play, Shakespeare conveys a hostile relationship between Romeo and Juliet’s families. The ancient feud between the two sides, the Montagues, Romeo’s family, and the Capulets, Juliet’s family, caused great destruction and chaos to their beautiful city of Verona, Italy. All through the play, it was evident that Romeo was an extremely dramatic, intense and emotional sixteen year old romantic. Before Romeo met Juliet he had been known for hopping from girl-to-girl as he did with Juliet’s cousin Rosaline. At first, although Romeo thought he was madly in love and couldn’t get over Rosaline, “When the devout religion of mine eye/ Maintains such falsehood, then turn tears to fire;/ And these who, often drowned, could never die,/
