Hey, tornadoes are really cool!

What I know... If you have ever wondered how powerful Mother Nature is, all you need to do is look at a tornado in action. Tornadoes can strike at any time, and almost any place, when the right weather patterns converge. Each year, about 1000 tornadoes are reported throughout the Unites States. They have destroyed many homes, large swaths of land, and even caused loss of life. Some of the most violent tornadoes on record had wind speeds of up to 300 mph and left a trail of damage one mile wide and more than 40 miles long! By comparison, Green Township has an area of about 16 square miles! Tornadoes don’t just show up out of nowhere, they normally occur during thunderstorms. This is because
On the afternoon of April 14, 1886, the city of Sauk Rapids in Minnesota was nearly wiped out after a tornado had struck the city. The whole city was left in complete devastation. Natural disasters have always interested me, specifically tornadoes. Something about tornadoes, whether it’d be how they form or how they acquire their power to cause great destruction, interests me to learn more about tornadoes. This led me to research about tornadoes in Minnesota. As I began surfing the internet about tornadoes that occurred in Minnesota, I came across the effects that each tornado had caused to the areas that it had struck. This is where I discovered the effects of one particular tornado called the Sauk Rapids Tornado. As I looked at the
Tornados are one of the most destructive and devastating natural forces on Earth. When a tornado is fully created, wind speeds can reach up to more than 300 mph (483 km/h). Most tornadoes that occur are between the Appalachians and Rocky Mountains, but tornados can happen where ever the conditions are right. 90% of tornadoes that happen in the United States, happens in the Central United States. Even though scientist have not yet understood how tornadoes are formed, they’ve developed a theory that consist of the process and conditions of which a tornado must have to form.
Hurricanes and tornadoes are both severe weather events that can potentially cause a great deal of damage to property. Both of these storms can threaten human life and in severe events with either a hurricane of a tornado there may well be a loss of life. They may be quite different in how they form and what they actually do but on the other hand those storms are both potentially devastating so they fall into the same category of potential severe weather danger. People who live in areas where hurricanes and tornadoes are known to appear during certain seasons of the year are always urged to be alert to weather warning systems. Those same residents know from experience to keep their radios tuned to weather emergency stations and they are in many cases prepared for the brunt of a storm by building basement shelters.
Tornadoes are devastating atmospheric events that affect the ecology and the lives of people in their paths. Tornadoes are defined as “a violently rotating column of air, in contact with the ground, either pendant from a cumuliform cloud or underneath a cumuliform cloud, and often (but not always) visible as a funnel cloud” (Glossary of Meterology, 2011). The Tri-state tornado was the most deadly tornado in the United States. It stayed on the ground for a total of 219 miles through areas of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, killed a total of 695 people, and an estimated $16.5 million in damages (National Weather Service, 2011). Luckily, the tornado’s path was largely rural farmland with scattered small towns between them. <Add thesis>
People are constantly scared of one of nature’s most feared storms, the tornado. This storm can happen anywhere and anytime if the conditions are right. Some people are willing to risk their lives to see this! It is a thing of beauty in their eyes.
When tornadoes do form; such places as the National Weather Service (2014) classify tornadoes into three categories. These categories are weak, strong, and violent. “
Some tornado specifics can be interesting, some can be boring but these are the fascinating ones. There is a part of land in the Midwestern U.s where more than 1,000 tornadoes form. Most tornadoes only stay on the ground for less than five minutes and some tornadoes stand still while others can go on devastating speeds. The destruction tornadoes make is mostly from the debris that it picks up. More than half of tornadoes are weak and don’t cause many
What is a tornado?A tornado is a narrow, violently rotating column of air that extends from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. Because wind is invisible, it is hard to see a tornado unless it forms a condensation funnel made up of water droplets, dust and debris. Tornadoes are the most violent of all atmospheric storms.Where do tornadoes occur?Tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, including Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. Even New Zealand reports about 20 tornadoes each year. Two of the highest concentrations of tornadoes outside the U.S. are Argentina and Bangladesh. How many tornadoes occur in the U.S. each year?About 1,200 tornadoes hit the U.S. yearly. Since official tornado records only date back to 1950,
The Joplin tornado was the biggest tornado on the record for that year. The Joplin tornado was the most powerful tornado that people have ever seen. After the tornado was over there was no building without debris on or in or by them everything was destroyed. The tornado killed thirty-eight people and over 1,000 people were injured. The cost of everything was about 2.8 billion dollars for stores, houses and even cars. The Joplin tornado was the tornado that caused the most damage that year. Now learning from that I have some tips for you. Some tips for you when there is a tornado in the area: If you see a tornado then run to the lowest area in your house and protect yourself. If you don't have a lower level then go to a room without a window. When the tornado hits keep covering yourself till it
On May 22, 2011, Joplin, MO was hit by one of the deadliest tornadoes recorded since 1947. Growing to a category EF-5, and tearing a path of nearly a mile wide, the tornado claimed 161 lives, and roughly 7,500 homes and 500 businesses were either damaged or destroyed. The estimated damage was nearly $3 billion, the highest ever for a tornado in the United States. Lives were lost, many people lost everything they had, and yet they would still stay to pick up the pieces and rebuild. The area of tornado alley in the United States expects this type of natural disaster, and is always prepared, however predicting tornadoes intensity can be extremely difficult since one can never tell what a tornado is going to do next.
A tornado is a very complex and complicated type of outdoor vacuum. The various types of tornadoes are caused when a great size of particles become part of cloud and start releasing heat rapidly which makes it rise and create a vacuum underneath it. The air that quickly goes into the vacuum creates the center of the tornado or the tornadoes vortex. Then when the air temperature changes it causes a sudden drop in the air pressure. When the heat is being released in the vacuum it causes precipitation. The rain released is equal to the amount of heat absorbed.
A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. The most violent tornadoes can produce massive destruction with wind speeds of 250 miles per hour or more. The typical tornado moves from southwest to northeast, but they have been known to move in any direction. The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 miles per hour but it may vary from stationary to 70 miles per hour. Although tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, they are found most frequently in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains during the spring and summer months. In an average year, 800 tornadoes are reported nationwide, resulting in 80 deaths and over 1,500 injuries.
In the area of, Ashford University and Clinton Iowa, tornadoes can occur at any time, but primarily occur between the months of April through October. Tornadoes can be the most brutal of storms. Winds speeds can reach speeds nearing 300 miles per hour and can destroy anything in its path. Tornadoes form rapidly and can travel for miles along the ground and lift up from the ground, and then suddenly change directions and touchdown again! There is little you can do to protect your property from a direct hit by a tornado; however, many actions can be taken to protect you and your family.
Tornadoes are one of the deadliest and most unpredictable villains mankind will ever face. There is no rhyme or reason, no rhythm to it’s madness. Tornados are one of the most terrifying natural events that occur, destroying homes and ending lives every year. April 29th, 1995, a calm, muggy, spring night I may never forget. Jason, a buddy I grew up with, just agreed to travel across state with me so we could visit a friend in Lubbock. Jason and I were admiring the beautiful blue bonnets, which traveled for miles like little blue birds flying close to the ground. The warm breeze brushed across the tips of the blue bonnets and allowed them to dance under the perfectly clear blue sky. In the distance, however, we
The damage from tornadoes comes from the strong winds they contain. It is generally believed that tornado wind speeds can be as high as three hundred miles per hour in most violent tornadoes. Wind speeds that high can cause automobiles to become airborne, rip ordinary homes to shreds, and turn broken glass and other debris into lethal missiles. The biggest threat to living creatures, including humans, from tornadoes is from flying debris and from being tossed about in the wind. It used to be believed that the low pressure in a tornado contributed to the damage by making buildings "explode" but this is no longer believed to be true.
