Within the past several decades, as medical and scientific research have progressively advanced throughout the world, the global market has expanded to encompass a wide range of medications, chemicals, cosmetics, and other commercial products. In an endeavor to account for the constantly increasing demand for these products, numerous research facilities and laboratories have arisen across the United States. However, although a number of these medications and cosmetics have proven an asset to society, these products are created at the expense of the lives of millions of innocent creatures. Before becoming available for consumption on the market, the effectiveness of these products is verified through a series of unfathomably cruel animal trials and experiments. While the government has sought to maintain a measure of control over animal experimentation through the implementation of laws, these efforts have been largely in vain. Despite the enactment of regulations designed to reduce the mistreatment of …show more content…
To begin with, animal experimentation subjects innocent creatures to immense physical and psychological agony through the employment of abusive, inhumane procedures. Currently, an approximate 26 million animals in the United States alone undergo trials and experiments devised to ascertain the efficiency and overall safety of products developed for human use (“Animal Testing”). In a futile attempt to prevent the immoral treatment of animals in scientific laboratories, the government enacted the Animal Welfare Act several years previously, granting marginal protection to a handful of sentient species. However, the Animal Welfare Act excludes nearly 99 percent of animal species commonly used in scientific studies, thereby enabling scientists to experiment on creatures such as birds, mice, fish, and other cold-blooded species without interference from the law (“Animal Testing 101”). Consequently, in order to test commercial
Every twelve months, more than 100 million creatures are executed in U.S. research facilities for chemical, medication, food, and cosmetics testing; science lessons; and interest driven experimentations (“Medical Testing on Animals Is Cruel And Unnecessary” 1). Some people are convinced that testing medicines on animals is needed so that one day, there may be
Approximately 26 million animals are used every year in the United States alone for research and commercial testing (“Background of the Issue” 1). For years, legislators have debated the pros and cons of animal testing, and laws were passed to attempt to fix the inhumane treatment of the cute, innocent testing subjects, the animals. Although the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was revised numerous times, “the species most commonly used in experiments (mice, rats, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians) comprise 99% of all animals in laboratories” and are the animals that are specifically exempted from protection under the act (“Experiments on Animals” 2). A simple fix to animal cruelty during testing is to use alternative methods since human and animal bodies already vary greatly. For years, animal testing was the best option because there was no alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system; however, in the age of technology, there is no reason for millions of animals to be killed due to the severity of the testing. Therefore, animal testing should be banned because alternative methods provide more accurate results since human bodies are very different than animal bodies; furthermore, animal advocacy organizations should promote cruelty-free products more so customers know what to purchase and use.
Animals endure so much pain and suffering when being tested on. In some cases, animal testing can be deadly or lead to serious side effects that will forever stick with the animal that was tested on. Animals hardly ever, to never benefit from testing. In research and testing, animals are subjected to experiments that can include everything from testing new drugs to infecting with diseases, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing brain damage, implanting electrodes into the brain, maiming, blinding, and other painful and invasive procedures (NEAVS). It can include protocols that cause severe suffering. Also, can’t forget about the restricted living conditions where animals are forced to live in an unhealthy habitat out of their own element during the testing period. Animals in labs suffer not only pain from protocols, but also severe stress from day-to-day laboratory life. They spend their lives in barren cages, unable to make choices or express natural behaviors. Most never experience fresh air or sunshine, only bars and concrete. Although most think that the Animal Welfare Act protects animals from abuse, it is a common misconception that the AWA protects animals against abuse and harm in the laboratory or in other areas of commerce. This is not true. According to the National Anti-Vivisection Society the AWA regulates the use of animals in research and outlines standards for their care, it does not protect
“Animals undergoing testing can be subjected to torture and suffering” (Humanity, 2017, p. 1). Some animals may be cured of their ailments and diseases, but not all. In some cases, the animal dies do to the treatment. Humane treatment of the animals is a valid concern, so the use of them in experiments has been greatly regulated. “This has led to the 3Rs campaign, which advocates the search (1) for the replacement of animals with non-living models; (2) reduction in the use of animals; and (3) refinement of animal use products” (Hajar, 2011, p. 1). The Animal Welfare Act was signed to protect certain animals from cruel treatment, but the animals chosen for testing aren’t covered by this act. Many people believe that animal testing is unethical since animals are
Over 100 million animals get burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in United States labs every year. Animal experimentation or commonly known as animal testing, is where scientists test their chemicals and products on animals to make sure it is safe for human use. Animal testing should be used because it's not only harming the animals it's costing a lot of money and animal lives.Animal testing should not be used because it harms the animals. Some tests involve killing pregnant animals to test on their fetuses. ¨Many of the tests performed on animals in the name of science, opponents maintain, are downright barbaric, rendering their subjects damaged and disfigured.¨ (Animal testing: Is animal testing morally justified?)With the amount of tests being performed
Every year, over a hundred million animals are burned, poisoned, and abused in laboratories for medical, drug, food, and cosmetic purposes. Animal testing is the use of living animals in experiments for research. Therefore, it is cruel and inhumane to use animals for such a purpose. Scientists conclude we are similar to animals, as chimpanzees share approximately ninety-nine percent of human DNA, but drug tests given to animals does not necessarily have the same outcomes on people. The Animal Welfare Act(AWA) regulates the treatment of animals in research, but many laboratory animals are excluded from the protections. As technology increases, an alternative testing methods now exists that can replace animals. Many people believe we aren’t superior
Over the past few decades, animals have been enduring unimaginable pain and fear due to being used to test the everyday products we use. And as unfortunate as it sounds, animals simply do not have the choice in these cruel experiments scientist put them through. According to data collected by F. Barbara Orlans for her book, In the Name of Science: Issues in Responsible Animal Experimentation, “sixty percent of all animals used in testing are used in biomedical research and product-safety testing” (Orlans There will always be different points of views on this troubling topic, some may be against it because they see animals as their companions or some may support it because they only see animals as objects to move forward with science and experimental
Animal testing has been a controversial topic discussed by many people over the past decade. There are many organizations that are trying to ban the use of animal testing because of the cruelty us humans are doing to innocent animals and the pain and suffering these animals go through. The first organization I found when researching was PETA (People, Ethical, Treatment, Animals). From my research, this is the largest animal rights group founded so far. Their main office is in Norfolk, VA. They are not only fighting animal testing but animals for the use of food, clothing and entertainment. This organization has donated over a million dollars to find non-animal testing methods. Another organization I found was PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine).
Each year in U.S. laboratories, small animals are tortured in several ways such as being deafened, having their skin burned off, and having holes drilled in their heads (PETA, “Animals in Medical Experiments”). These cruel abuses can be prevented if animal testing is eliminated. Animal testing is an inhumane method of research that uses animals to ensure the safety of medicines and cosmetic products for human beings. As suggested by Kristina Cook, small animals such as mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs are the creatures who are subjected most to the torture, but larger animals including primates and dogs are also frequently used for experimentation.
Imagine yourself in a world with no animals – no birds chirping in the morning, no squirrels eating your flowers, no dogs or cats running around the house. Where did all of the animals go? They are all locked inside of cages in poor conditions in laboratories across the country. They wait in loneliness and terror to be called upon for testing. The conditions they wait in are enough to make them go insane. More than one hundred million animals die every year from animal testing. The Animal Welfare Act does not provide protection for ninety-nine percent of the animals used. The use of animals for the testing of products is a popular debate that has gained a lot of attention over the years. Scientists argue that testing products on animals is
Every year an estimated hundred million animals, in the United States, are subjected to undergo painful and invasive procedures. The majority of these experimental animals spend their entire lives in cages and eventually die from the insensitive tests that they are forced to endure. Animals that are tested in laboratories typically include dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, mice, monkeys, and many more. Ninety-nine percent of the animals that are experimented on are birds, mice, and rats. All of which are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act.
“Given the climate of poor regulatory oversight, many animals are also abused, neglected, and harmed in ways that violate the law”( “Animal Testing and the Law” ) , revealing the horrific underlying effect of animal testing that society does not want to display to the public. Not to mention, many animals are unprotected by the law and forced against their will to undergo a horrid experience—“legal tests include burning, poisoning, mutilating…, and dissecting without painkillers”( “Animal Testing and the Law” ). Many animals are caged behind closed doors that the public cannot see because scientists who use these techniques do not want to upset the public; however, the law is not forcefully used to protect animals in a harmful environment. Furthermore, animals have no voice to establish a strong faith for their future; humans determine the fate and well-being of the animals. Animal Welfare Act, a Federal law that addresses the standard of care animals receive at research facilities, excludes about 95 percent of animals used in research and has low protection for the rest ( “ Animal Testing and the Law” ). Precious animals used in experimental research should be protected fully, if animals are going to be used, otherwise animal testing should be banned if the laws cannot fulfill their duty of protection because of the horrible experiments that may take place. “M.A. Fox
Animal testing for human safety is inhumane and must be banned. Beloved house pets such as rodents, rabbits and even dogs are being tested on all over the world. These powerless and voiceless animals are intentionally given dreadful diseases to find cures while scientists could be finding alternative ways of testing instead of using our furry friends. Furthermore, the tests are not precise because there have been products found to cause cancer in animals but also cures human ailments. Why are humans authorised to conduct such inhumane things, who gave humans the power of heartlessly torturing feeble animals?
Through the years, animal experimentation has played a key role in leading to breathtaking discoveries in medicine, products, and cosmetics. However, what many people tend to forget are the numbers of animal subjects that have suffered serious harm during the process of experimentation. Each day across the United States innocent animals are used as test subjects for products that have little to no relevance importance. Animal testing has had many negative issues that accompany it in society. Debating over the animal rights movement has raised many questions and concerns for years. There is an ongoing controversy regarding if companies should stop testing their products on animals. Although animal research has been the cause of many medical breakthroughs, it is considered morally and ethically right to put animals in these kinds of situations. One of the most asked questions in society is: should animal testing be illegal? When considering how truly reliable the results of animal test are, and the expense of testing will help bring new light to the problem. By simply passing a policy will not only address this issue but will help better products and medicine in the future.
No doubt, we all love our products whether it be beauty, medicinal, or cleaning purposes. Of course they satisfy our needs and maybe even go above and beyond and just make the smallest difference or the biggest in our lives by improving or making things easier. Ever wonder how these products go about being made? Probably not. This however is something we should consider paying close attention to. Behind the scenes of our most favorite products is the cruel, silent methods of animal experimentation. What is animal experimentation exactly? Animal experimentation is when animals are used for scientific research. It has played a huge role in biomedical history, but it’s also been one of the most controversial discussions. In most cases, they are used for cosmetic products or medicine. A wide variety of animals are used which include rabbits, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, monkeys, birds, mice, and fish. Several laws have been passed to make this kind of practice more “humane” (Hajar). In today’s time, animal organizations and rights groups have taken this to be one of their main priorities to stop this. Even in the past people have been disturbed by the painful and unnecessary treatment of the animal subjects. Throughout history, animal experimentation occurred in many ancient cultures, mostly for the purpose of testing products for human use.
