As a first generation college student I have always dreamed of changing not only my life, but the lives of people like me. Growing up I was, and still am, very involved in politics- I viewed activism as a way to change the way I and many other lower class Americans live. I started watched the news when I was a middle schooler, which grew into speaking out on social media, which lead to volunteering for campaigns and going to college to pursue my political career. I am student at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio studying Political Science and History. In addition to being a full time college student, I am an intern on Capitol Hill, and a member of the Butler County Democratic Party Executive Committee. I plan on using my education and college experiences to run for a political office, get money out of politics, and help my …show more content…
I hope to take what I have learned about the political system at Miami University and strive to get money out of politics, so the average person can voice their opinions just as much as any wealthy corporation or individual. When I run for Congress I want to fund my campaign entirely on low-level contributions from everyday citizens, to prove to the public and other government officials that they do not need to be controlled by lobbyists and special interest groups who have the power of the purse. My greatest aspiration is to be apart of a truly democratic society that represents the interests of everyone, even those who cannot afford to donate large amounts to their representatives. If I make it to the House of Representatives, I hope to bring about lasting policy changes similar to the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act, and I would like to see the Citizens United decision overturned. My education now will help me achieve these goals and be a mouthpiece for all those who will not get the same educational opportunities I have been
I am a graduating (December) kinesiology major at the University of Maryland. Though my major may seem completely unrelated to politics and legislation, the kinesiology curriculum is set up to engage each student in multiple social and political discussions. This, along with my interest in politics and legislation as led me to the path of becoming an Administrative support/Secretary for the Department of Legislative Services. Over the past 3 years, I have become very interested and passionate about topics pertaining to politics and legislation. I want to one day make a difference in my community through these means. I see this as the first steps toward accomplishing the goals that I have set forth for myself. I cannot sit idle and turn a blind
My only intentions are to become a responsible adult with making wise decisions that will not only benefit myself but the community around me. I really enjoy communicating towards people and seeing how I can help with my community. My family has been very supportive of my behave so I would be given the opportunity to get to where I am now. Knowing I have support me a strive to want to give back, to not only them, but the people that walk amongst us. When the time comes to paying my bills, debt being paid off from student loans or home payments, and building a good credit after years of experience in the field of law, it will be all worth it at the end of the day, I only hope it encourages and presents as a good example to show my legacies that if you want to be something great , you must pursue it with patience and diligence. The knowledge from paying attention in class today will be well used in situations of how to handle predicaments and debates on different views and learning about the basic requirements as a student learning in the
I hope to be able to secure a stable, well-paying job with the help of my college degree and to be able to give back through tax dollars, donations and scholarship funds. I hope to also help others find jobs and to make Lamar County attractive to businesses looking to plant their roots in a prosperous community. It is also important that I will be able to be part of groups that will allow others to find those jobs. Additionally, I wish to give back financially to those who are less fortunate, especially the children who live in the local Housing Authority. I believe that by helping the children, I will be investing in the future of the community.
Besides my involvement with High School Democrats, I have been involved in civic activism. I am currently an intern for the National Organization for Women, and we have been trying to pass bills in the Michigan
Many people want to change America, but only a few people accomplish that goal. However, I intend to go beyond just changing America. I intend to change lives.
I’m not the most likable person but I have known ever since I was a little girl I want going to help and change America's future. Growing up I would say that my family and I lived in a middle-class home in the suburbs of Chicago. I went to a public school I was a Brownie and a Girl Scout. I went on a trip to Chicago with my youth ministry, and we saw Martin Luther King Jr. and listened to his “I have a Dream” speech it really inspired me to get involved with social justice. My father, Hugh E. Rodham was a WWII Navy veteran and a small-business owner, and my mother Dorothy Howell Rodham, stay at home mom. Unlike me my mother had a very tough childhood. Her parents left her when she was little and had basically raised herself alone. Due to her
We all believed that we were “beginning our paths to change the world!” However, by midterms we realized that this was just another cliche used to keep us from leaving the school before our tuition checks were processed.
My outside interests include politics and working with political campaigns in order to institute positive change. My interest began in high school when I was 1 of 1,000 high school boys selected throughout the State of New Jersey to attend American Legion Jersey Boys State. This weeklong program is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students sponsored by Rider University in New Jersey. I was able to represent my city/district of 40 students in the program as a City Councilman and Assemblyman. This program really provided me with much insight and exposure to the government and the operation of the various entities of governing. I noticed that there were many things that required a lot of
Eventually working with motivational speakers to create my own non-profit organization and if possible even to work on a school to get equal opportunity for education.
The current situation that has perplexed me at this very moment in my young life does not pertain the trite subjects that saturate that inner workings of teenage brains like dating, obtaining the most likes on social media, attending the most parties, etc., yet the idea that captivates my attention is the impregnable desire to keep our world alive and filled with happiness for all. As mentioned, my past experience in leadership and community service has cultivated my passion to make the world a better place, but my extracurricular activities in-school and outside of school have also shaped this passion. As mentioned, I served as Vice President (7th Grade) and President (8th Grade) of No Place for Hate at my middle school. One of my most memorable
It has been a long journey to get here. Not only for me, but for this country. Only 97 years ago were women given the right to vote. When I was a young girl, I never dreamed of becoming having this job because I didn’t believe that it could be a job for anyone but a man. Though I struggled to get a start in politics, I persevered and kept going, even when I believed that I couldn’t go any further. I kept working towards this point, even when I was told that I could never make it. Today and for the next four years, I hope that I can prove not only to young girls, but to people of color and minorities that no dream is too big. However, the fight isn’t over yet. We must
I would like to help young people realize that their opinion does matter and if there is something that they want to change in their community or on a broader level, they can. They have the ability to make change happen and I as a Democracy Coach want them to know that. I want to be able to help them realize all they can do and help them enact the change they want to see. Young people are the future and we have to help them realize that in the future they have a voice and they should use it. I know that until I took a political science course my senior year of high school, I didn’t think I had a say in politics.
I would like to become more actively involved on campus. I would also like to gain more leadership experience and help students on campus become successful. I would love to represent the Edinboro University Student body as a congress member, to ensure that the needs and ideas of the student are heard. I want to change the future and present state of our school.
I want to inspire others to be inquisitive with the world around them, to step over boundaries, to ask questions. I want to provide people opportunities to get involved in their own society. I want to help people reach their goals and become something amazing. I want to encourage my peers to follow their dreams and to control their own future. So, I promise you, that if I am elected, I will, encourage, aid, and inspire those around me.
As I stated above, it is my goal to become an attorney. As an attorney, I could represent the downtrodden in court. I could become counsel for a non-profit or social agency effecting change from the inside. I could one day become a judge and make decisions that positively affect those who have become accustomed to living on the short end of the stick. None of us, plan as we may, no the true chart that our life’s journey will take, but pursuing a career as an attorney with a keen eye fixed upon fighting for social justice is as good of a place as any for a person like me to
