Why I Want to Pursue a Career in the Health Sciences

My freshman year of high school I literally had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up. That is, until one day, when I suffered a lot of pain at football practice. I never thought a broken hand would be so beneficial to my future. The next morning I had to get surgery and they told me I would have to see an occupational therapist to be able to use my hand again. I was not thrilled about this news because they told me therapy would be very painful. The first day of therapy was horrendous, I forgot to take my pain medication and she made me do all these weird stretches with my hand. I wasn’t looking forward to my next appointment. After awhile I started enjoying my appointments more and more, I got to the point where I was looking forward to going to my appointments. My occupational therapist was very helpful by telling me what all I needed to know about occupational therapy. Because of the improvement I could visually see, the way my therapist was always in a good mood, and the hands on work you do, is why I want to be an occupational therapist. Many people do not know what occupational therapy is, which is a downside of the job. According to bls.gov, occupational therapists treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. They help these patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working.
