One a country of former Vikings and the other a country founded on the concept of individualism and the dream that each man can earn what he’s worth that no one is oppressed and all are treated equally no matter what. A patchwork family that does not see your son or my son only my family. Both people that fought through hard times and crises to get where they are and the different values they hold and the way they live. This is the reason to explain why Iceland is better than the U.S economically and culturally. Let’s begin with the economy of the Iceland first. Here are some of the reasons that Iceland is better than America: The economy “Iceland is an unusually pure example of the dynamics that blocked regulation and caused financial fragility across the developed world for 20 years by 2007 tiny Iceland supported three banks in the world’s biggest 300 banks, with assets eight times the GDP—second highest in the world after Switzerland. The popular Icelandic sagas and eddas were written during the High and Late Middle Ages. Icelander is a country that places a heavy importance on individualism and self-sufficiency witch reflects their heritage as Vikings. Some of the traditions in Iceland reflect this such as the belief in elves or the unwillingness to rule out their existence. Most of the paintings of Iceland by painter are linked to Icelanders strong sense of nationalism and the movement for home rule and independence. Most contemporary Icelandic landscape paintings are typically traced back to Þórarinn Þorláksson who was trained in Copenhagen, he exhibited his paintings in Iceland from 1900 to his death in 1924. Icelandic music is closely related to Nordic music in most music is inspired by vibrant, folk, and pop traditions. Some American cultural values are; Individualism one of the more prominent value that warrants self-fulfillment and
Erik the Red was a Norwegian Viking that was born in the 10th Century C.E, and his life contributed significantly to the outstanding legacy of the Vikings through his explorations. It is through the discovery of Greenland and its later settlement that cast Erik the Red’s legendary adventures into folklore. These two events are how Erik the Red played his role in Viking history, not through warfare, but through explorations. The adventures undertaken, and the feats achieved by Erik the Red cement his place in Viking History.
The Vikings discovered Iceland in 883 and was discovered by Flóki Vilgerðarson. Flóki Vilgerðarson named Iceland because it was winter and all he could see was ice. Some people tried to change it but it stayed.(William R. Short)
America has many ideas, people, and values that it can attribute its greatness to. Every single person that has ever been born in this great country has impacted the United States in countless ways. Anyone who is fortunate enough to live the life that Americans get to live, are given the chance to create, change, or continue the legacy of America.
In the autobiographical memoir “Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark,” the author’s purpose is to present her experiences with cultural differences, moral values, and views on life. The memoir is organized by chronological order, starting from her journey to Sweden, and ending with her final stay in Denmark. Her overall tone surrounding the purpose is cynical, contemplative, reflective, and solemn. The diction she uses can be described as precise, cultured, and concrete. This helps her to express her views with solid reasoning.
Americans have been breaded to believe America is the greatest country in the world. America is a place of the freedom and possibilities, an outside looking in a very desirable place to live. However, America is not as great as Americans believe. Sure Americans have a wider range of freedom then most countries, but has plenty of issues that will repulse others from coming to the land of the free. Issues such as women’s rights, racism, and discrimination plague U.S. citizens nearly each day and that should change now.
The "Vikings" were an ancient people that inhabited Northern Europe and Scandinavia known as the Norse (also known as Northmen or Norsemen). The Norse people were spread across Northern Europe, particularly in the regions known today as: Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, and Finland), Germany, Denmark, Poland, Netherlands, the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Ireland, and the surrounding islands), Iceland, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
Though positive ideologies are associated with Sweden, 1868-1893 was a terribly rough time in Sweden’s history. Famine, economic hardship, and political unrest plagued the country. Through all the famine and turmoil, the Lindmark’s survived because they
commitment to religion and strong social cohesion also made it difficult for them to change and to learn
The Vikings escaped from tyranny and fled Europe. They found and settled in Iceland and Greenland. They made expeditions to find new lands were others wouldn't dare go. If it wasn't for the Vikings, the world would be drastically change. Some lands might not have even been discovered or even inhabited. Thankfully, the Vikings were there so, they we could find them and discover new and precious metals and resources. That of which, the world uses and is grateful for today. Vikings really cherished time spent voyaging with their family and closest friends. One of the reasons their
Simply put no, America is not the greatest country on earth; even though most American’s choose to believe it is. While I know that almost all Americans share a very strong sense of pride and nationalism; not to mention a devout love for their country, it’s just that they might not think about it 24-7. I disagree greatly with the very often wrong and misstated statistics that suggest that America is just another sad declining country; the statistics people quote are just fake and insensitive to our nation. With that said we are, as a nation, falling behind on some categories like education and healthcare. The United States is almost last in childhood obesity in 2-4 year olds; also the U.S.
I feel as though other people around the world aren’t as lucky as us Americans. We have freedom and opportunities while in other countries governments are stricter and in many cases there is no freedom at all. Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, petition, right to bear arms, right to due process of law, freedom from self-incrimination and or double jeopardy are just a few that Americans live by. In the best case scenarios being an American is having the advantages of good jobs, living in good environments and having a good source of food. A little more than half of American families are making $60,000 or less and are living better lives then others that may live in poverty in different countries around the world. We have shelters for the homeless, which provides them with food, clothing and a bed to sleep in. We have people that care no matter who you are to them, whether you know them or not, we do know to respect and treat them the same. Not everyone can believe America is so phenomenal. We may be one of the greatest but we’re not #1 or the only one reaching the top. According to the CIA fact book, the United States is 63rd in the world for education, 42nd in life expectancy, and 169th in mortality
The Vikings were Norse seafarers, who mainly spoke the Old Norse language. They raided and traded from their Northern European homelands across wide areas of northern, central and eastern Europe, during the 9th to 11th century. The Vikings originated from Scandinavia, and the beginning of the Vikings expansion often originates from the raid of the Lindisfarne Monetary on 8 June 793. The Vikings were the first Westerners to sail to Iceland, Greenland, and over to the New World. However, the story of the Vikings is also an important story for the development of the Christian world in the West. Throughout this essay, I will explain the importance of Viking religion, Viking trade, and how the Viking age had an impact on the way Western and
It is important to study the nature of the alliances that the Vikings took part of, as it gives us a better understanding of what facilitated their insertion into other European territories (eastern and western Europe) and the communities in Asia Minor. It is clear that their settlement and acceptance in these parts of the world, despite their raids, was not made overnight.
But the imprtant thing to understand about Iceland is that in their culture they put the most importance on two traits. These traits are their indepndence and there ability to self-sufficient. Also the people of Iceland are extremly proud of their Viking heritage and Icelandic language. Plus the fact that they take great care to preserve their traditions and past them down from genration to genartion. Modern day Icelandic still remains close to that of which they spoke during the Viking age. Before chrisianity came in to Iceland many traditional viking beliefs were strongly held so much so that many people either belive in elves or are unwilling to say that these creatures do not exist. In Iceland society and culture they have a high amount of gender equality. So much so that many women have leadership postions in government and business. They also have progressive gay laws, with coupls being able to register for civil unions. Since the year 2010 they even allowed these coupls to be married. Women even keep their name after marrige. They also have one of the most progressive child protection laws. Were in on of these laws it even says that spanking your child is outlawed. Iceland has been ranked in the top ten of the happiest nation in the world. This was all possible becaase of their
When it comes to the historical features of Iceland there are some that seem to stand out more than others. It could be the original inhabitants, date of their independence, historical warfare, or maybe just the historical events and how they influenced the current society. The original inhabitants of Iceland were said to be “Irish monks who probably settled there in the eighth century” (Lacy 66). It was the last European country to be colonized. According to the CIA World Factbook (2010), Iceland became a soverieign state on December 1st, 1918 state under the Danish Crown and then got its independence on June 17th, 1944 from Denmark. “Iceland historical warfare include World War One which was from 1914-1918 and then World War Two which was from 1939- 1945. In 1976 Great Britain and Iceland signed an agreement to end the Cod War” (Lacy p. 237). One of the major disaster which wiped out much
