I strongly believe this book shouldn't only be read but also taken into consideration because it can teach you a couple things about taking risks in life. Holden Caulfield is a troubled 16 year old who gets kicked out of high school 4 times, fails 4 out of his 5 classes, and is getting expelled from his current school, Pencey Prep school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. This book is associated with many deranged incidents. Holden Caulfield loses his mind after the death of his brother that was too much for him to handle and begins to feel empty. Everyone in high school should read this book because it is one of literature's most polarizing
In the first chapter of this novel, we get introduced to the protagonist and narrator of the novel, Holden Caufield, from a rest home in which he has been sent for therapy. He refuses to talk about his early life, although he does explain that his older brother “D.B” sold out to writing for Hollywood. His story and breakdown begins in the school of Pencey Prep, a boarding school set in Pennsylvania. The setting for the early chapters in the narration is his "terrible" school, to which he describes the atmosphere to be “as cold as the December air on Thomsen Hill”. Holden’s student career at Pencey Prep has been destroyed by his refusal to apply himself. We know this after Holden explains he failed four of his five subjects, passing only English. Due to his lack of effort and determination, he was forbidden to return to the school after the term. The Saturday before Christmas vacation began, Holden overlooked the football field, where Pencey usually
A book that I’ve read in the past year that had an impact on me would have to be Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger. This book had several different impacts on me and I believe it is one of the best books I’ve read thus far. This book is written from a teenagers point of view and it discusses the day to day problems that teenager face. On the surface Holden, the main character, is a teen who got kicked out of his private school for failing his classes and is struggling to come up with a way to tell his parents, but on a deeper level the teen is coming of age and trying to find his true identity. Reading about this, made me aware of myself and it allowed me to think of one question throughout the entire book: who am I trying to become? Literally,
This song speaks volumes as to what Holden is trying to find in life. He wants to be happy, but he is often depressed with his life. In the story it is revealed that the museum is his indeed “happy place”. In the story it reads “I get very happy when I think about it. Even now” (120). Holden admires the fact that nothing in the Museum changes and wishes that the museum could represent how his life would go. Simple, and manageable all characteristics he wishes he could trace into his real life. The song brings this all together because no matter how long it’s been since Holden’s last visit it still gives him the same spark of happiness as the last time. Being happy is definitely the main point of this
So far while reading the Novel I have met the main character Holden Caulfield who narrates this whole story. The character is very interesting being only 16 and already be kicked out of schools being out of shape because of smoking. The way that Holden views everything and everyone as "phony" Another character that we have met is Holden’s older brother D. B. Caulfield. D. B. wrote a volume of short stories that Holden admires very much, and is writing for Hollywood movies. I am intrigued by this character because of how different Holden and his brother are that Holden seems to be having troubles with academics because kicked out of several schools but yet his older brother is very successful. Another character that we have met is Mr. Spencer. Mr. Spencer is a history teacher at Pencey Prep. I find this character interesting because throughout the book with other characters Holden as something "bad" to
The beginning of this novel leads into his life, Holden 's past, and what 's waiting for him in the future. In the first few chapters we find out that Holden Caulfield, the main character, goes to therapy and his older brother is a writer in Hollywood. Early on he goes to visit a man named Mr. spencer, his retired history teacher who is sick with the flu. They begin talking about his recent expulsion, and they speak of Holden 's future. He was sent to boarding school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. The school he attends is called Pencey Prep. His roommate 's name is Stradlater. Holden and Stradlater don 't see eye to eye when it comes to girls, especially when Stradlater starts dating Holden 's longtime childhood friend, Jane. The story goes to describe his living condition and the people Holden is surrounded by at Pency Prep. A person that plays a major role is his suite mate Ackley, who is a lonesome character. He annoys Holden, but still influences some of his decisions. Ackley and Stradler do not get along and Holden many times has to break up their minor fights. Later the reader finds out that Allie, Holden 's younger brother, died of Leukemia many years before. Holden goes on much to say that he had red hair and was an innocent boy. The night Allie died, Holden spent the night in the garage and smashed every window with his fists. Going back to Stradlater, he was getting home from his date with Jane, the long lost friend, and Holden gets so enraged he begins to throw
The book starts off by the main character, Holden Caulfield, introducing himself to the reader. He is a young boy and goes to a school called Pencey Prep in Agerstown, Pennsylvania, and is about to be expelled due to the fact that he is failing four of his five classes there. Pencey is going to be the fourth school he’s flunked out of. Since he’s leaving in a few days he decides to skip out on a big football game that is going on to talk to his favorite teacher Mr. Spencer. When he gets there he is let in by Mrs. Spencer and shown to the room where Mr. Spencer is. Holden feels uncomfortable being in the room because Mr. Spencer was sick with grippe and looked very depressed. They talk about Holden flunking and what his parents are going to
The story allows teenagers to see just what kind of life you get out of not trying your hardest in school. Depicting Holden Caulfield as a disturbed and misunderstood teenager could be an understatement. I addition, it was banned was because of reckless behavior. Holden is a sixteen year old who loves to talk about sex. In chapter 9, Holden looks out of his hotel window into other rooms, where he sees a ¨distinguished-looking¨ man prancing about in womens clothes, and a couple squirting water into each others mouths.
Holden Caulfield, a boy who struggles with his mental health, starts his story by saying, “I’m not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything. I’ll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me around last Christmas” (Salinger 3). Published in 1951, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger depicts a three-day journey of Holden as he tries to find out more about himself. Through his struggle, Holden experiences many obstacles and events, such as depression and profanity, that take place in most teenager’s lives, making the book a primary target for banning due to offensive language, suicidal tendencies, sexual content, violence, and outright negativity (Information). Though The Catcher in the Rye contains controversial topics, such as depression, vulgar language, and sexual discrimination, the novel is still relevant and relatable to teens today; therefore, the story should remain an option for students to read.
The Catcher in the Rye was not your typical book during the time it was published. The book is about a teenager named Holden who is giving his opinions and views of the world in a descriptive way, that people were not used to reading. The themes of this book are still relevant to today because teenagers can still relate to it.
The novel I have chosen to write about is The Catcher in the Rye. This novel is interesting because it portrays the story of Holden, the main character, and how he struggles on his path to adulthood. Holden sees the adult world as dishonest and shallow, and he considers all of the adults to be phony. Even though Holden doesn’t ever want to grow up and join the adult world, he will eventually be forced out of his childhood. Towards the end of the novel, Holden watches as his little sister, Phoebe, goes around on a carousel. At that moment, Holden tells us that he is happy. This is the only moment in the novel where he tells us that he is happy.
Even though it was written in 1951, I think many teens would be able to relate to the different themes shown in the book. I find the main character, 17 year old Holden Caulfield, very unusual and as I read the book, it was interesting to get inside the head of the strange, rebellious character. It felt like I was seeing the story through Holden’s eyes. Just like a movie, the story was unfolding
The book starts out with a flash-forward, and almost immediately transitions to when he is kicked out of his school for his poor academic performance. He is failing four of his five classes, only passing English because he had apparently covered most of the material at a past school. We are then introduced to one of his neighbors within the dorm, who he doesn’t seem to like very much (and quite frankly, neither do I. Dental hygiene is important, and this man is very negligent in the tooth-brushing department.), and then to his room mate, who he discovers is going on a date with a girl who Holden knows, Jane. Most of the book is just him going about an interesting time in his life, and I found it to be enjoyable.
people. It is very easy to find The Catcher In The Rye immoral if you
In conclusion, Catcher in the Rye is a very good book fitted more for teenagers because of the more adult themes and topics. I would rate this PG because of the themes and symbols in the book. If you like books where is has a lot of details on a character then Catcher in the Rye would be a good book for you. I believe teenagers can connect with this book because of the types of scenarios in the book. The book brings light to phonies and growing up as a thing many people have thoughts about. In all I would rate Catcher in the Rye a ⅘ stars because of the types of topics written about, no specific plot and message to the book in all but a very entertaining book.
In many novels the title of the story is more important than most people initially think. It often reveals important information about the story. The Catcher in the Rye is a title whose significance gradually becomes apparent as the novel progresses. Written by JD Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye is a coming-of-age novel in which the main character, Holden Caulfield, wishes to preserve the innocence of children. Through the title, this theme is portrayed and emphasized. The title of this novel takes its name from a line in a poem by the poet Robert Burns.
