There were many brave men and women who contributed to the vicious fight for Texas independence from Mexico. James Bowie, born in Logan County, Kentucky, on March 10th, 1796 was one of the men who put his life on the line for the Battle of the Alamo.A battle that would help free the Texas people from Mexico's unjust laws and punishments. James Bowie was the ninth of ten children. He learned how to read, write, and speak Spanish and French fluently.As a boy, he learned much about how to survive on the frontier and became very well trained with his pistol and knife. Once grown, he decided he wanted to join the Louisiana Militia after the start of the war in 1812 against the British. He also was going to stop land grants, because there were too many Americans coming across the border to take the land grants. James was very important to the Texas Revolution and fought in battles such as the Long Expedition, the Battle of Nacogdoches, Battle of Concepcion, Grass Fight, and the Battle of the Alamo.
