In Neal Gabler’s book, Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality, he states that the entertainment industry has the capacity to ruin our society. His statement is incorrect for a multitude of reasons, but there are people that could agree with his statement. Some of the reasons why it is wrong is because entertainment can bring people together, it provides entertainment for those who need it, and it gives a great number of opportunities to those who go into the field. Those who disagree with it being good can argue that it is mindless, effortless, and predictable as said be Neal Gabler himself. The first reason why Gabler’s statement is wrong is because without entertainment there wouldn’t be as many ways for people to come together.
Unfortunately, this utopian argument doesn’t account for the countless studies correlating film and television viewing to perpetuated hate and stereotyping, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Declining SAT scores and library check-outs over the decades have lead critics to believe that film and television are aiding in the international "dumbification" effort, in which individuals are losing the ability to think without direction. This phenomenon is closely related to the more recent "couch potato syndrome", in which laziness, lack of physical fitness and a passive attitude combine, producing the ultimate unhealthy lifestyle that is currently sweeping the majority of modern America. More important, however, are the two great faults of film and television. First, film and television establish false
Entertainment nowadays is like drug. By comparison, drugs and entertainment both mess with your head and likewise, you feel like you’re suffocating without it and it is slowly driving you crazy. For example, in Fahrenheit 451, Margaret relied so much on her entertainment that she gets to a point where she starts to call entertainment “family” and starts saying
Neal Gabler’s 1998 book, Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality, brings up controversial questions about the necessity or unnecessary want of entertainment. Scholars may claim that entertainment breaks family bonds, undermines community, and decreases people’s integrity. Certainly, entertainment in the 21st century in the form of movies, video games, and social media are more widespread than ever. However, not all forms of enjoyment are obscene; sports, television shows, and fan conventions can promote social involvement, reduce stress, and improve collaboration skills.
Every individual is wired their own way, however one screen can throw that all away. All it takes is that one click, one swipe, one flip to inveigle the innocent minds of the twenty first century class. Entertainment, better known as the very factor that provides people with pleasure, has turned into a controversial topic for most individuals. They see entertainment with the main purpose of providing happiness for all, ranging from the eldest audience, to the youngest of children. However, in reality, it is quite the opposite. Nineteenth century critic Neal Gabler posed the argument that society has the capability, “to overturn all morality, to poison the springs of domestic happiness, to dissolve the ties of our social order,” to propose the
One reason for why Bradbury showed being caught up in entertainment is bad, is that people don’t care about each other. For example, in the book it says “yes” said Millie. “Let old Pete do the worrying” “It’s always someone else’s husband die, they say”, this quote shows that the people in the book don’t care when someone dies or when people go to fight in wars (Bradbury 94). This not good because no one is able to create relationships and if they did it would be weak, and they would not care if the other died. For this reason, being caught up on entertainment is not good.
Four million babies were born each year, the introduction to rock and roll music took place, and more schools and homes were constructed in its cities (History), having a great impact on America and its people at this time. But nothing had as big of an impact on American society and its peoples ideas, as the grand emersion of the television. “Television was not merely entertainment. It was a teacher, offering lessons in what was acceptable in society.” (Stereotypes, page 3) Television and it’s forms of entertainment itself, changed the way people saw gender, class, and moral values
Thus, he relates that pop culture and what it idealizes can easily shape our values in a negative fashion and get in the way of elevating those values which are truly
Does the entertainment industry pain the world in a bright light as to not remind people of society's issues? I'd tend to believe so. The real world can be harsh, filled with pain and regrets. For two hours, or however long it is, we can escape that harsh reality and view the world in a new and brighter light. Some times all we want to do is be Dorothy Gale who gets to leave her grey and saddened life in Kansas.
Introduction In "Everything Bad Is Good for You" Steven Johnson is arguing about different forms of entertainment such as television, video games, films and the Internet that has grown increasingly complex over the past several decades which also corresponds to an increase in the average IQ scores in the U.S. The introduction summarizes various cultural criticisms regarding entertainment by focusing mostly on television. Johnson uses the springboard to state his thesis that of popular culture is becoming more complex and that complexity is also making consumers of pop culture more intelligent. The author is describing the sleeper curve as Everything Bad proves that people are getting smarter because the media is getting more wide and complex.
Another harm this entertainment brings to society is it gives the media an easy scapegoat. When some atrocity gains national attention, the first thing that is thought of is music and entertainment. When a young boy burnt down his house because he was watching Beavis and Butt-Head, and they were playing with fire, the show was blamed. How about we blame who are really at fault here -- the
What do you think of when you hear the word entertainment? Do you ever wonder why it’s the way it is? Have you wondered what forces, ideas, and people have molded and shaped it over time? How does entertainment affect culture and a society? These are questions that might have many different answers of varying explanations and magnitudes. For centuries, people have looked to a multitude of different things to do as a way to escape their normal lives and to have fun. So then came various forms of entertainment. Although it may not seem so at first glance, taking a more critical look at the similarities that our society shares with the Brave New World’s society may yield some shocking discoveries.
Mr. Gabler’s assertion that entertainment would eventually ruin society, although not entirely invalid, is not correct. Entertainment has been a near essential part of culture since culture has been around. While entertainment has been a part of society for an indefinite time in recent years it has become increasingly integrated into the everyday lives of people. In the 18th century a popular example of entertainment would be the theatre.
Is entertainment destroying or benefiting modern society? There is no doubt that entertainment is the main source of amusement for many today. It is used in almost every common man’s daily life, from watching TV to listening to the news. However, entertainment has unfortunately become deeply saturated in people’s lives, to the point where it is no longer healthy or beneficial. The utilization of entertainment has become an addiction, thus giving it the capability to annihilate society. From the adult industry to television shows, one conclusion is inescapable” entertainment is, indeed, a dangerous tool.
One of the benefits of popular culture is entertainment. First, people are entertained by attending public events. For example, people attend sporting events. For example, fans can attends sporting events such football, basketball, and baseball games to watch their favorite team play. Also, several fans benefit by watching their team play on TV. Secondly, people attend other public events such as concerts of famous celebrities. Thirdly, individuals can be entertained by watching movies. In her essay Shih talks about how movies can be entertaining (389). For example, in action movies such as Mission Impossible there several Hollywood stunts that entertains the people who are watching the movie. Also, in mystery films the main goal is to keep people guessing on what is going to happen like in the movie cube. Next, entertainment benefits society through electronics. For example, people are entertained by downloading apps that allow them to listen to music, play games, and watch movies some examples of these examples of apps that people that are downloadable includes apps such as Candy Crush, Spotify, and Crackle. Furthermore, entertainment is a benefit to society because it relieves stress. For example, if a person isn’t having a great day they can click on a website similar to YouTube and watch funny video such as “ghetto chef” series by a YouTube channel called DashieXP. Also, stress is relieved by watching movies on a site such as Netflix, which features different types of categories such as tv shows, comedy, horror, and action.
Have you ever had an original thought? Why do we dress the way we do, watch what we watch or even live the way we do. Through our means of entertainment, it is almost a guide in how one should live their life. With the technology we have in our world we are persuaded to believe what is right and what is wrong. Although we create our own world, our thoughts were imposed upon us since the day we are born. “What if the world is some kind of show. What if we are only talents assembled by the Great Talent Scout Up Above! The Great Show of Life! Starring Everybody! Suppose entertainment is the Purpose of Life,” says Gabler. We wake up in the morning where most of us have a daily routine we go through. Why do we put on
