It is argued among most that some older works of art may be outdated or irrelevant to todays culture. Since our society is ever-changing and shifting, it is said that these works do not apply to today. Some may believe that they are universally relevant and time will generally always be the same. Whatever the argument may be, no one can seem to come to a conclusion. Romeo and Juliet is a relevant work for a person in modern times due to how love overpowers hatred, family can become a hardship in which you battle, and being overly prideful can lead to rebellion.

In William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations in Romeo and Juliet through various language techniques and structure. Romeo and Juliet were star-crossed lovers. Both Romeo and Juliet were from feuding families that would not approve of their marriage. In the play they are presented with many difficult circumstances. The play was set in the Elizabethan era; there was a significant change in religion, family and politics. Attitudes and key scenes highlight the theme of love in difficult circumstances and prepare the audience for Romeo and Juliet’s suicides at the end of the play. In this essay I will be exploring the ways Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations.

For Romeo, how he changes is quite different, and more sudden than Juliet’s slow advance into maturity. Prior to meeting Juliet, Romeo is always very upset, and he isolates himself from society.

I believe William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet is an eternal tragedy that continues to hold relevance in modern day society, which is evident in Romeo’s death soliloquy, in Act 5 Scene 3. It is during this scene where Juliet has been reported dead, and Romeo rushes to the Capulet’s tomb. It is for the reason that Romeo wants to kill himself, out of desperation and despair, as he cannot live without his star-crossed lover, Juliet. Romeo kills Paris and promises to bury him in the tomb with Juliet. The scene concludes with Romeo grieving over Juliet’s body one last time and stealing one last kiss, as he drinks the lethal potion.

Shakespeare has been around for a long time and so many people have critiqued his work. They all take their interpretation and they think that it is right. There have been so many interpretations for Romeo and Juliet, which is Shakespeare’s most famous story. So many people have their own opinions on what Romeo and Juliet is really about. The problem is that everybody thinks that their interpretation is correct and there is no other way that the story could be read. Although Carolyn E. Brown, writer of “Juliet’s Taming of Romeo”, makes a good argument about how Juliet ‘tames’ Romeo in the story, I believe that in their relationship, they are equals.

Happy is a word that derived from the Middle English language and is one word that has not really changed over time. The meaning of happy has always meant a pleasant feeling, fortunate, or lucky. This five lettered word plays a huge role in our lives every day, from keeping us healthy to our everyday attitudes. As we have probably heard before, the key to life is happiness. It unlocks many doors and brings new opportunities to the table.

We, humans have not changed all that much. Sure, our technology and way of thinking may have been altered after all these centuries, but how we think and act hasn’t changed.
