Romeo and Juliet is irrelevant in modern times because of the fact that society has changed; we are more technologically advanced, social status does not decide to whom a person can marry, and people are not as cultural suppressed as in Shakespeare’s time. Things have become extremely different since the era of Romeo and Juliet. It is a classic, it is just is not relevant in this day and age. Technology has come a long way since William Shakespeare’s day. Now if two people wanted to communicate all they would have to do text, email, or call a cell phone. They would not need to sneak around sending letters or messages through secret couriers, or meeting in secret by the cover of night like Romeo and Juliet did. Everyday people are surrounded by others from different walks of life. People are not as sheltered as they were during the time of William Shakespeare. As Romeo says regarding the idea of leaving Verona, “There is no world without Verona walls, But purgatory, torture, hell itself. Hence banished is banish’d from the world” (Shakespeare 1099). Romeo was afraid to leave Verona. He thought that outside of Verona was absolutely literal hell. He was taught that Verona was the only place worth living and everywhere else was torture. Everything he knew and loved, including Juliet, was in Verona. In modern times Romeo and Juliet is irrelevant due to the fact that society has changed. We are more technologically advanced, also social status does not decide to whom a person can marry, and as well as people are not as cultural suppressed as in Shakespeare’s time. Modern society is light years away from the closed minded ways of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This story does not correctly depict life lessons in modern times.
