The third historical landmark I went to was Historical St. Mary’s City. St. Mary’s City is one of the oldest locations in the United States. It is the most accurate representation of what life was like back in the 17th century. St. Mary’s City, established in the early 1634, was the very first settlement and capital of Maryland. Here, the ships known as the Ark and the Dove landed with supplies and a few colonists who would eventually create the first settlement. After the Ark and the Dove left shore, they were never heard from again, supposedly lost at sea. St. Mary’s City was important to American History in many ways. For example, St. Mary’s City was the first in a lot of aspects, such as the First Settlement and Capital of Maryland.
The biggest event that ever happened at this fort was the Battle of Baltimore. The British attempted to bomb the fort but the defenses of Fort McHenry kept the Baltimore Harbor safe. On that day in September 1814, Fort McHenry became an important piece in America’s puzzle. And YOU have
Philadelphia was the capital of Pennsylvania as well as the United States for short time between 1790-1800, but it was mainly a port city. In the early stage, sugar, coffee from the West Indian island was disrupted to the North America through Philadelphia. Surprisingly, as a north state, Slave business was an important industry in Philadelphia for a long period because its close business relationship with the southern states.
St. Augustine Fort Mose was important to the start of North America. The people of Fort Mose were caught in the war between England and Spain. When it got attacked the fort was lost
Jamestown, Virginia also known as “America’s birthplace”, went through many hardships and adversities in its first years. The journey from London to the Chesapeake Bay alone, took four months when it was only to take three. The rivalry and conflict happening in the ship itself only made matters worse. Once the colonist arrived to what is now known as Virginia, their conditions only worsened as food, water, and shelter were scarce.
From the moment of its first colonization by Peter Stuyvesant as New Netherlands, New York State showed military promise to both the British and the French. Colonial New York extended from the Atlantic at New York Harbor all the way north, to the great lakes on the border of the French colonies of Quebec and Ontario, which made up the combined colony of Canada. Its great size places it perfectly in between the Southern States and New England. Therefore, whoever controlled New York controlled the fate of both regions of the original 13 states. New York is utilized for its geographical importance in two of the most prominent wars of early American history: The French and Indian War and The American Revolution. The significance of New York
On January 25, 2105, cold winter day, I went to Jamestown, Williamsburg, around 48 miles away from Northern Suffolk to check the site. The first thing that impressed me was how big the island is. The island is surrounded by tall trees and water. It was also said that the water is deep enough for the ship to reach the shoreline (United). While I was checking the site, I was surprised how some of the ruins are still intact after few centuries, especially the church and the bulwark/defensive wall (not sure thought if they were the original wall). It is also interesting that archeologists found/are finding many historic artifacts that are being displayed at the museum. I would highly recommend visiting place.
Colonial Williamsburg is one of many historical sites that is unique for its cider, ability to have the clothing they used, historical facts, and items they used in the 18th century, it is also unique for having buildings that look almost exactly like the ones back in Colonial times, like the Bruton Parish Church, the Governor’s palace, the Magazine, and a few others. The one that is most valuable to us today, and was most important in colonial times, is the capitol. The capitol of colonial Williamsburg has been around for over 300 years and has been rebuilt twice caused by fire. In the same building, the declaration of independence was written. It represents how government used to be, and how we changed it, where we changed it even. Nowadays we still have a government, and we’ve built off of it because we used to have only two branches of government, now we have three. Therefore, the building that should be awarded the commemorative coin is the capitol of Williamsburg because of how it influenced our government today.
Coloniial Williamsburg reflects what life was like for virtually all social classes—from enslaved field hands to the gentry—who lived during the colonial era. Visitors to the world’s largest living history museum can peek into the various aspects of colonial life there, such as clothing, foods, politics, religion, customs, and trades. Additionally, tourists can observe buildings and other exhibits that clarify for the public the colonists’ day to day experiences. Some of the most historically important structures are Bruton Parish Church, the Capitol, the Governor’s Palace, the Magazine, and the Peyton Randolph House, all of which were essential in the lives of Williamsburg residents. While all of these reveal a great deal about eighteenth
In Philadelphia during the eighteenth century, faith was the top priority for most of the city’s population. There were many Quakers inhabiting Philadelphia at the time. The first legal Catholic Church was established in the colonial city in 1773. The first stop on the tour and a very important colonial landmark was the Christ Church in Philadelphia. The Christ Church was the tallest building in British North America in 1776. Some of the most important historical figures were memorialized at the church such as Andrew Hamilton, who was responsible for establishing freedom of the press in America. At that time, practicing Catholicism was frowned upon and people were killed for doing so. Another landmark visited on the tour was Old Saint Joseph’s Church. Old Saint Joseph’s Church was the only place in Philadelphia where it was legal to practice the Catholic religion in the eighteenth century.
Jamestown Settlement is a living history museum founded on 1607. Jamestown Settlement is the archaeological site where the first settlers lived when they journeyed to America. This locale tells the story of 17th century Virginia. The story starts with the arrival of the English colonists. This locale also showcases events that sow the seeds of the emerging nation of modern day America through films, gallery exhibits, and outdoor living in the past with its history. Attraction nearby Jamestown is the Colonial National Historical Park. The two are connected via the Colonial Parkway. Cafes and restaurants nearby include the Dale House Cafe, the Istanbul Restaurant, and Jamestown Pie Company. To help you with your next visit to Virginia, keep reading
After visiting all of the extra credit historical sites I can confidently say that the place that I enjoyed the most was Fort Point. I enjoyed Fort point the most because it consist of history from multiple time periods. The fort was originally a Spanish one that they constructed to defend the newly occupied San Francisco bay. After the Spanish abandoned the fort the Americans would eventually take it over and use it all the way onto the civil war. I think this fort is quite interesting because as a resident of the bay area I never think of another country sailing into San Francisco bay and trying to take it. But back in the early days of California that was a constant threat to the people that lived here and that is why Fort point was so important.
The city of Baltimore was able to withstand the British. Even after the burning of Washington D.C. the United States was still able to stand and defend itself. This signified that war was not over and the United States still had some fight left. If the United States was not able to protect Fort McHenry and would have been overpowered by the British the United State would have lost the
The city of Philadelphia was considered one of the best colonial cities as it was planned well and had wide and attractive streets
The beautiful city of Baltimore, Maryland, nicknamed “Charm City” is full of historical cites and landmarks. It was founded July 30, 1729, and it was named after Lord Baltimore, the first proprietary governor of the Province of Maryland1. It was founded to serve the economic needs of 18th century farmers2. The waterways in Baltimore have been a passage for ships carrying commercial cargo and new citizens since the 1600s. Baltimore became the second leading port of entry for immigrants to the United States during the 1800s. Shipbuilding was one of the earliest industries in Baltimore, and it increased during the Revolution and the War of 1812. When the British controlled Philadelphia in 1777, Baltimore became the meeting place of the
The major cities of the United States are all very interesting, after I analyzed my decision; I decided to research the great city of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was founded on September 17, 1630 and has a rich historical background making it a very important city in the United States. “The city of Boston was the home to several important events during the American Revolution such as: the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, the Siege of Boston, Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.” (Snow, Caleb H. (1828). History of Boston. Abel Bowen.) These were all significant events that helped shape the city Boston has become today.
