Though Gatsby is really just a sad, lonely man trying to regain Daisy Buchanan’s love on the inside, through the eyes of others, including Nick Carraway, he is seen as this great mysterious being. Living this sort of mysterious life and throwing these lavish parties just adds to the illusion of his greatness. For example, one of Gatsby’s first parties seen in the novel is described by Nick, stating, “I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited−they went there … Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission.”
The single most admirable thing about Gatsby is his utilization of romance. Jay Gatsby is not just a failure, he’s also a massive success. After all he is the great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby, the title character of The Great Gatsby, is really not all that the title might suggest. First of all, his real name is James Gatz. According to Cynthia Wu, no matter how many critical opinions there are on The Great Gatsby, the book basically deals with Gatsby's dream and his illusions (39). We find out from the novel that Jay Gatsby is not even a real person but someone that James Gatz invented. Wu also tells us that Gatsby has illusions that deal with romance, love, beauty, and ideals (39). Wu also points out that Gatsby's illusions can be divided into four related categories: he came from a rich upper class family, a never ending love between him and Daisy, money as the answer to every problem, and reversible time. Through Nick's narrations we can really see who this Jay Gatsby is and the reality to his illusions, and from this we can make our own decision

While having tea he brought her over to his house to impress her and show her around to reconnect. Showing her to his room and throwing all his shirts he had received from England. They were all made from sheer linen, thick silk, and fine flannel. She was so impressed by the shirts alone by saying “They're such beautiful shirts” (92).
