Why Kids Hate Homework

Studies show homework barely makes a difference. Kids claim homework is useless to them, and they might be right. Homework can be hard for kids and when they have trouble then it is harder for them to understand what the instructions are. Kids also get worried when they forget their homework. I think you should be able to turn in homework a day early or a day late. Most importantly kids do not perform better by a lot when they do homework. I think kids should have no homework.

Kids shouldn't have homework. Kids have stuff to do like sports, spending time with family and working. Instead of doing 6 or so hours of homework every night. “homework came in behind not only socializing but also exercise or sports as well as working for pay.” (Gazette,par. 24) I agree because some students have to rush to get their homework done at lunch or before school because they either have sports or have to go to work everyday.

The amount of homework given to students should decrease. The extensive amount of homework takes away family time that is necessary to child development. Also, stress that can can come with homework can cause health issues. The amount of homework given to students can cause students to cheat off students answers because they did not finish. Also, most of the homework that is assigned is not necessary in learning the material.

Students feel more stressed and turned off to learning, which is, a lifelong pursuit when it comes to homework. Too much homework turns kids off to learning and makes them less rather than more invested in school and learning. Are children having too much homework? There has been a big disagreement about if students should have homework or students should not have homework. Some people say they should not have homework and some say they should have homework. Children should not have homework, because it wastes all of the time out of school.

Due to the fact, kids already go to school for eight hours and their brains shut down, causing health complications, too much homework can affect test scores, and kids have outside events, family, sports, church, and jobs to worry about. Some people agree with the idea of forcing teachers to have a limit on homework and some believe it has a beneficiary effect on students. Homework is a thing that should be a something to do at school. Homework can be a distress so why should we have homework. Homework is something that is supposed to help you but I don't think it does. A lot of people hate homework. Homework is just something that is boring.

Heavy loads of homework can be shown more as harmful than good, not only for students but also for their families. As shown in Source B it says, “It is the primary arena in which children, parents and schools interact on a daily basis” (Gill and Schossman). Which I can totally disagree with from my experience, stating that every time I come from school to home, I always have to go straight to my room, turn my computer on, and either work on essays or have to search up problems for my algebra assignments, or just information for any class in general, which takes up a whole day of my life. Another reason is it is very time consuming! These homeworks are always getting in my way of either having activities after school or just time to spend with my family, which I hardly ever have a chance to do because of all the work I have, and might I also state that my mom is always worrying about my health since I usually don’t have time to eat too, also she is always asking me if I have time to read the bible with my siblings and father, which I automatically have to state I can’t because again of all this work. Another statement I have is how homework is mainly useless to our education, grabbing information from Source F, “Kids who wouldn’t dream of cheating on a test or copying a research paper think nothing of copying homework” (Chaika). Since doing homework is just such a waste for us we usually just copy it either from other people or from the internet, and since math class usually just gives a packet about what is going to be on the quiz, we end up using that to study which ends up being more helpful for the upcoming test rather than doing

   First of all, Americans today tend to believe that not having homework will be better for some kids and people. But, in some ways homework can benefit the teachers, children, and parents. It can help kids learn from their mistakes. It can also help the teachers and parents learn from their students mistakes too.

It has been said that “with all the homework students start to think less creatively and they might lose the learning to try and avoid challenging tasks” (Kohn). The fact that homework is able to make the students lose what they are learning is perhaps the most important reason that is is not beneficial. Homework has been seen as a way to increase learning and practice what students are learning, but with too much homework it can defeat the purpose. Students are getting much more work that is harder, because the schools are receiving stricter standards from the government that they must follow. Students are not being able to think creatively, because they are tied to standards and homework. “For students to become lifelong learners and good people, we need to work with them rather than using techniques like rewards and punishments, which merely do things to them” as said by Alfie Kohn, author of the book The Schools our Children Deserve (Kohn). Students see large amounts of homework as a punishment, and as said by Alfie Kohn that “merely does things to them” (Kohn). Teachers should assign less homework to allow students more time to sleep, to engage in more physical activity, and spend more quality time with their families.

The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks.

As a final point, shortening back on homework would stop students from cheating and copying homework off their friends. Cutting down on homework would reduce students stress and would allow them to focus on just learning. Some students have extracurricular activities outside of school which makes their schedule busy. On top of that many teachers give a lot of homework which makes students worry and panic due to the lack of time they have. This makes them more tempted to cheat and copy off someone’s homework. According to healthline.com “ In 2013, researchers conducted at Stanford University found that in high achieving communities who spent time doing majority of their homework go through more stress.”
