Throughout your whole life you will learn that notetaking is a skill that you will use close to everyday of your life. When notetaking it doesn’t have to just be writing down information with pen and paper. You could simply just make a mental note in your head of something that is important and needs to be remembered. In college, every student will not be able to listen to every word being said by the professor, even if you have good memory. When notetaking during a lecture it’s important to take down the key information and the concepts that you will need to remember. If the professor likes to talk for an hour straight there is no way you can remember all of that the next day. Notetaking is the best way to cover the lecture effectively.
Another strategy, is reviewing your notes. I find that it’s easy to forget what we have wrote down. Reviewing your notes allows maximum recall of the material you write down. Recording the general main idea and details can be more useful than verbal notes. Notes serve to record information for recall and should show the main points of the lecture in an organized manner so that the relationship between points and details are easy to tell apart.
There is of course also the issue of a different class style to grow accustomed to. It stands to reason that my strategies for taking notes during lectures would need work as lectures will become a commonality for me as a college student. The book mentions using the note taking process that works best for an individual and does not attempt to assign the label of best to any of the methods listed, because ideas are tools after all. The book also mentions the importance of each step of the note taking process and this seems to be where the most work is needed for me. At times certain steps are skimmed over and a greater attention to detail could assist me with learning more from my notes, and this is perhaps the biggest thing that can be taken from the book, and it does apply solely to note taking
For me, note-taking happens sporadically. Throughout much of my writing life, I’ve worked on poems in my head for a long time before I put anything on paper.
