Should school days begin later than 7:50 Am ?
Imagine this, you’re up until 12 a.m the previous night completing your homework, putting the finishing touches on your project and studying for you big exam the next day. You have to wake up at 6 a.m. to be able to have enough time to get ready and commute to school, but not enough time to enjoy a healthy and well balanced breakfast because school starts promptly at 7:50 a.m .How will this affect you throughout the school day ? I believe that school days should begin later than 7:50 AM because if so students will be able to get enough sleep and will have enough travel time.
School should begin later than 7:50 a.m. because students will be able to get enough sleep if school starts a little later. According to the Nation Sleep Foudations’s “sleep in America poll” eighty percent of teens (ages eleven to seventeen) do not get the recommended amount of nine hours of sleep on school nights. Also according to this poll forty five percent of teens sleep no more than eight hours on school days. Not getting enough sleep can also lead to falling asleep in school. According to

However, that isn’t the case in order for a student who wakes up at 6 a.m. to get the recommended nine hours of sleep they would have to go to bed at 9 p.m . Teens have trouble falling asleep early and that’s because of our biological clocks. According to kidshealth.org “ During adolescence , the body’s circadian rhythm (an internal biological clock) is reset, telling a teen to fall asleep later at night and wake up later in the morning.” We can blame this change on the hormone, melatonin which is produced later at night for teens. That is why teens have a harder time falling asleep until around 11
In “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why.” by Dan Weissman they both have their own perspectives on life about school starting times and the problems they may bring to the students of high schools. In Michelle Trudeau’s story she says that the starting times for high schools has many students still very drowsy and tired most of the time having them nod off during school instruction. She states that in an average high school 20% of students fall asleep in class on a typical day. Therefore, in need to prevent this from happening teens need more sleep as opposed to them not getting enough sleep from either staying up late or period as some experts say. There are many ways to add additional support for teens and their sleep.
Do you ever wake up and feel like you haven’t gotten enough sleep? The reason is because in reality you probably haven’t. Studies show that schools should not start any earlier that 8:30 in the morning due to teens suffering from sleep deprivation. There are many negative effects this condition can have on a teens body including a direct effect on one’s physical and mental health, public safety and excelling in the future. In the Ted Talk video, " Why school should start later for teens" by, Wendy Troxel. Ms. Troxel explained why school should start later for teens.. Students are very drowsy in the morning and are usually rushing to get to school on time which limits breakfasts times and healthy food options. Schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for several reasons but sleep deprivation is the most important. Sleep deprivation can cause a direct effect to a child’s general health and behavior, public safety and potentially future success.
If we were to start school later, academic GPA’s (grade point averages) would definately increase. Isn’t this what we want in our school? It is proven that the more sleep you get, the more awake and alert you actually are. I interviewed Michael Claffey, a sophomore at Newington High School, he stated “ Goooooud.” Also Jorge Premto a sophomore at Newington High School stated “Yes Michael, yes I do believe school should start at nine o’clock am. This will thus help further my education because I will be well rested.” In all, we need school to start later because it will help us with our education.
“Making teens start school in the morning is cruel” says brain doctor. Mary Carskadon at Brown University has shown that teenagers need about nine hours a night to maintain full alertness and academic performance. Getting up at 6:00 am is totoo early. We should have a later start time because we need more sleep to focus, tTeens need a certain amount of sleep, and we need to stop dozing off in class.
Do you wake up in the mornings to your alarm and snooze it because you are still tired and need more sleep? Many students have complained about the time you are required to get up for school. Most teens are arguing that it is healthier for them to get more sleep. In the article “Despite proven benefits, Starting School Later Remains ‘A Tough Sell’” by Tim Walker, claims that “...letting students sleep and starting school later can lead to better health and academic outcomes.”. Students should be given more time to sleep because it is good for them.
Schools can adjust their times and start early. If schools started at least an hour or two earlier, it would help kids not be as tired during school. This would give kids the right amount of sleep they need. According to the article, “But I’m Not Tired” by Alice Park, most middle aged children need 10 ½ hours is ideal. The author states, schools in Edina, Minnesota, shifted the start time from 7:25 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Teachers reported that fewer students are falling asleep in class, and many are getting better grades. Students and parents are pleased with the results.
About 10% of American high schools start the day before 7:30, around 43% of schools start around 8:00, and only 14% of high schools start at 8:30 or later. With schools average start time being at 8 it makes some kids have to get up at 6:30 maybe even earlier. For a kid waking up at 6:30 he/she would have to go to bed at around 10 to get 8.5 hours of sleep, but you know that won’t happen with how much homework kids are given now a day (schoolstartlater.net).
Students hate getting up so early for school. Right? Teenagers on average need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. A two thousand twelve study shows that students who start school an hour later than usual saw their math scores on standardized tests increase an average of 2.2 percent. When students are able to get the sleep they need, they are able to get up and make it to school on time. Also when students get the sleep needed, they not only are able to make it to school on time but it gives them the sleep they need to be able to function which improves academically. High School start times should start later because it allows more sleep for teenagers, increases attendance and improves academically.
School start times vary across the country, from six to ten o’clock in the morning, and are heavily debated by students, parents, and superintendents. Some believe that the early bird gets the worm, while others demand their beauty sleep. I firmly believe that all schools should start later in the day, since it helps students get more sleep, perform better in school, and be more alert in class.
The first reason schools should start later is because teens would do better. Evidence for this is that the AASM says that schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. This could help high- and middle schoolers to get better grades in their morning classes if we applied this rule. The second piece of evidence is that this argument isn’t new, other people have been at this for a long time, meaning the dispute isn’t old and the problem has occured to the teens of the past. It’s very difficult for teens to get tired before 11:00 p.m. If we let them got to bed at that time, that means that they would have to sleep in till 7:30 a.m. Schools are starting at 8:00 to 7:50. That doesn’t give them a long time to wake up and get ready for school. (All evidence in this
.firstly, If school were to start later in the morning, students wouldn’t have time to get as much sleep as they need. Students would go to school earlier and that means they would get out later, and with
Do you think school starts too early? Well, according to recent studies, you’re right! There is lots of data that shows that teenagers aren’t getting enough sleep at night. In fact, according to data from The National Sleep Foundation says 87% of high schoolers don't the recommended amount for someone their age. With lack of sleep comes many negative consequences. If they don’t get enough sleep it can result in health problems, have negative effects on academic performance and increase reliance on drugs, alcohol, and caffeine. Let’s review the problems with schools starting later, the negative effects that sleep loss has on teens, the benefits of getting enough sleep and the setbacks of later start times for schools.
83% of schools start before the recommended time of 8:30 AM. This is dangerous because it is making teens more tired. Teens need at the very least 8 hours of sleep, while younger students need 9 hours. 66% of teens get less than 8 hours of sleep a night. This is a problem (Centers For Disease Control And Prevention).
I guess I just don’t understand why school starts at eight in the morning still, it has been proven that kids and especially teenagers just aren’t mentally ready at that time. It has been reported that teens need around eight and a half to nine and a quarter hours of sleep, but most get less than eight hours, and forty three percent of students get less than six hours of sleep. Because of this, it is said that thirty three percent of students fall asleep in school. That’s one third of all the students in the high school.
One of the reasons that school should be started later is because it does not give growing teens enough time to sleep. Sleep researcher, Wendy Troxel, who spoke on TED, says that high school aged kids’ sleep cycles do no start until 11 p.m and do not end until 8 a.m. This means that whenever students’ alarms go off from anywhere around 5-7:30 a.m, it simply does not
