Why Schools Should Require School Uniforms?

With gang activity, strict dress codes, and bullying becoming more relevant, the idea of school uniforms crosses the mind of many school districts across the country. Even though it may stop students from expressing themselves it would make it easier for staff members to enforce these strict dress codes, reduce the amount of bullying, and overall make schools easier. Which is why schools should have uniforms.

Have you ever had to wear a school uniform? School uniforms are plain and they have no personality. Who would want to wear something so plane? School uniforms should not be allowed in schools because they have no individuality, school uniforms can increase bullying, and finally they are so expensive.

It is proven through statistics that school uniforms may decrease the amount of crime but also increase student safety. With uniforms fighting in schools dropped by 51%, sexual offenses depleted by 74% and drug possession went down by 69% (M. Sue Stanley). Student uniforms are all the same, which helps the students and teacher conserve precious class time by not having to re-enforce the standard dress code. Having the same clothes as everyone else can be upsetting but, TeenVogue stated “there are tons of ways to amp up your standard issue getup” (Teen Vogue).

School uniform enhances school unity and community spirit and gives every student an equal status, regardless of race, religion or culture, whether they are from the upper, middle or working class backgrounds. This leads to young people feeling secure as a group and less likely to be bullied for not wearing the latest fashion trend, thus banning uniforms would be atrocious.

Thesis: School uniforms in private and public schools are very beneficial to the educational institution to help promote better learning and positive social skills.

The idea of uniforms being required for public school students has been a widely controversial topic in the recent past. This is because they take away a student’s right to their natural process of finding their individuality, they do not help to stop bullying even though they might increase student’s safety a little. Students say that they cannot express themselves because they all dress the same. Young students, especially ones in high school, like to express themselves to draw attention to themselves. The main reason schools say uniforms should be required is that different clothing is a distraction to the learning process. If the students can not express themselves easily, they usually try to find other ways to get attention that are more of a distraction.
