Artificial food dyes can be found in many products sold in the United States including food, cosmetics, medicine, and even cleaning products. The FDA allows for seven dyes to be used in food products: Blue 1, Blue 2, Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Green 6.1 Although this number is much lower than the over 80 dyes allowed in the early 20th century, many people are debating whether the 7 that are still allowed are safe.2 I think artificial food dyes should be banned. Food dyes, even in low concentrations, pose health risks. Multiple studies have shown that food dyes can cause hyperactivity and some types of cancer.3 The FDA has stated that a safe amount of Blue 1 food dye is 12 mg per kilogram of body weight each day.4 According to this
Some interesting questions were brought up that I was thinking of as well, questions such as, shouldn’t some of these additives be banned from usage in the foods we eat or shouldn’t they carry warning labels for users who do not know the dangers of these foods? I believe they certainly should be banned because we lived without these chemicals in our foods long ago, and we used natural flavors and colors in the previous years of humanity and according to research and studies the chemicals in the foods we consume today have obviously proven to trigger and increase the chance of getting many disorders. While reading The New York Times one of the studies mentioned and brought up was the selection of several hundreds of kids, and some kids were in a control group that received some special treatment by basically being given an additive-free placebo drink that looked and tasted the same and all of the children in the study were evaluated for inattention as well as their hyperactivity by their parents, teachers as well as a computer test and in this study neither the researchers nor the subject knew which drink the children had consumed. In conclusion of the study the researchers discovered that the kids were significantly more
Protesting has been going around the world for many of years. Throughout many years of people boycotted agents a situation they believe, if a wrong or right. One of the biggest areas on where people gather around and protest is when they’re fighting agents animals testing. As well as the years has pasted on protesting on animals, it became more sires in increased in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Many cosmetics companies been testing on animals throughout the years there is also many that have not. The cosmetics line LUSH has been fighting over animals testing for over thirty years and will continue to fight for their right according to the company. When LUSH had first started the company had divided they didn 't ever wanted to test their product on animal. Not only fighting agents animals testing LUSH is also ego friendly; everything they use its plants, oil, and recycle. Since LUSH having to be agents animal testing, policies had created to work with the companies of cosmetics to end the cruelty of animals. The LUSH company say “ This can be done without animal testing …” and it true. LUSH is a company that all there product dills with ones skin to make them fell and look beautiful. If LUSH can test their products other than animals and still make your still looking good then, other cosmetics companies can do the same.
About eighty percent of packaged food is infiltrated with harmful substances that is being sold to many people and they do not know what they are even consuming and the detrimental effects it has on them. This is known as a Genetically Modified Organism or a GMO. Genetically Modified Organisms are being sold without it being labeled, so people are not completely informed when purchasing or consuming them. GMOs also have unknown effects and causes that come with it. To protect people from GMOs, the US should ban Genetically Modified foods from being produced and grown in America. Another way to help protect people from eating GMOs is to make all foods sold natural and fresh.
The first main point regarding food dyes are the problems they cause in the population. The main three are Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6. “Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 account for 90% of all dyes used in America (Carrera NP).” Dyes are complex organic chemicals that were originally derived from coal tar but now are from petroleum. Think about it, children are eating substances that have the same content as gasoline, oil, and kerosene. On top of that, additives like Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Red 40, Red 3, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are known to contain carcinogens in them. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary classifies
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistics records the use of roughly 26 million animals per year for animal testing. These test reports in many cases are poor. Although animals were greatly used in the past the effects of treatments on animals and humans can’t be compared. The human body, reactions to toxins, and usefulness of treatments is different because we are different, “While animal’s maybe ‘whole models,’ states Dr. Aysha Akhtar, MD,” they are the wrong whole model because of interspecies differences.” Testing animals for human treatments should not continue to be practiced.
The use of artificial sweeteners in beverages and food has been on a steady rise since 1969, the year it was authorized in the United States of America. The popularity of artificial sweeteners has been on a rise because of the benefit that it is a zero calorie sweetener .Even though artificial sweeteners have some great benefits many scientists believe that it causes adverse effects such as cancer, weight gain and depression. I strongly believe that consumers are not aware of the side effects of artificial sweeteners hence the increase in consumption since 1969.
Food dyes are additives that help to give food and other items a more colorful and appealing look. Originally, food dyes were made out of natural ingredients such as fruit juice, vegetables, and in some cases, bugs. However, as time went on, other ways to make food dyes were created. Natural food dyes lead to synthetic coal tar food dyes, and eventually synthetic coal tar food dyes led to petroleum based synthetic food dyes. Synthetic food dye colors certified for food use are Food Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) Blue No. 1, FD&C Blue No. 2, Citrus Red No. 2, FD&C Green No. 3, Orange B, FD&C Red No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, and FD&C Yellow No. 6 (Kobylewski, 2010). Using just these nine dyes, there are over 360,000 different color combinations available.
Food additives can be found in lots of food that most people consume. Although food additives can make our food look delicious and even taste better, they contain many dangerous chemicals that may affect our health. Food additives can cause health problems in a person’s lifestyle. Many people do not realize the harm it can cause to their bodies. There are many problems, but also solutions to this situation. The solutions to this situation are: stay away from all kinds of additives, do not eat food that are preservatives, read the labels carefully, and find the FDA signs.
One of the biggest ingredient debates in America centers around products with artificial dyes, such as Mike and Ike candy. Artificial colors find their way into everything; the most common being red #40, yellow #5, yellow #6, and blue #1. Meats, candies, chips, sodas, and the like, pumped full of these artificial dyes, do not bode well for America. At one time the dyes were derived from herbs, plants, and fruits, but those days left us long ago, “In addition to undergoing approval, some color additives are known as "certifiable." Certifiable color additives are man-made, derived primarily from petroleum and coal sources. The manufacturer submits a sample from the batch for which it is requesting certification, and FDA tests the sample
Should people be worried about genetically engineered food? Many people are starting to question what it is exactly that they are eating and how it could possibly harm them. Specifically, the harm that could befall them from GM food. A genetically modified organism is something that received one or more genes from another organism. There are three arguments that the people worried about GM food put on the table; those arguments being: GM food should be labeled, GM foods are not safe to eat, and GM crops won’t end world hunger and feed the whole world.
Firstly, the dyes red 40 and yellow 5 are common additives in a lot of American snacks like Cheetos Flamin ' Hot Crunchy chips, but does that mean it is good for the consumer or does that indicate Americans have to do some changing to what they choose to snack on. On CSPI, a nationally recognized source on health issues for more than forty years, insist for change against these harmful dyes have been made multiple times. Red 40 can cause hypersensitivity in some people, while red 40 may induce swelling around the mouth, and it may also cause hives. The colorant might contain contaminants that
Table 4.12 and Table 4.13 shows the readings for the tests conducted at pH7 for the cationic dye and anionic dye solution. From the Figure 4.9 and Figure 4.10, it can be seen that the maximum color removal obtained is 85.67%, 83.30% and 78.93% for cationic dye and 71.83%, 64.08% and 62.91% for initial dye concentration of 25, 50 and 75mg/L respectively at WTR dose of 120mg/L. The trends of decreasing color removal continued with the increase in pH as the least readings were obtained at pH7.
Nature identical colors: They have the same chemical structures found in natural sources, but they were chemically synthesized, rather than being extracted from natural sources out of the consideration of cost saving (Color maker Inc. 2014). β-Carotene is an example (Color maker Inc 2014). The nature identical color is not safe either. Put aside the residues of reactants and byproducts used and produced in the reaction left in the reaction product beta-carotene. First, the natural beta-carotene are cis-trans isomeric mixtures containing two different isomers (9-cis and all-trans with same molecular formula but different structure), while the synthetic beta-carotene is consisted of the all-trans isomer. That means, synthesized beta-carotene
There are few regulations in the United States about what is listed by the manufacturer on the product packaging. As a result, the nutritional value of junk food lacks any significant content. To make products appear healthy, companies artificially add vitamins and minerals to junk food. Food in the grocery store and fast food restaurants has been deceiving the consumers by advertising the products as a healthy option. They will hide the unhealthy aspects of the products with fancy dieting terms and ingredients, which is listed on the merchandise packaging. Consumers should be concerned with levels of healthiness with products that have brightly colored packaging. In comparison, a sprig of asparagus does not need marketers to broadcast that
1. However, while these products might look appealing and tasty, they contain a wealth of hidden heath hazards which are not only dangerous if eaten in large quantities but are a major cause of obesity, especially in children (White, Janice).
