Early in 1972, having been discharged from the U.S. Army, I was desperately trying to figure out how I was going to support my wife and 2 small children. Many times in my life, I have often said that I could never find a job, so I had to create my own. This is the period of my life when this saying came about.
One evening, Linda and I were visiting with several of her aunts and uncles. We had pooled $1,050 to start a family business, but found that it wasn’t large enough. What kind of a business could we begin that wouldn’t require much money? Linda’s Aunt Kristine spoke up and said, “Why don’t we put cayenne pepper in capsules?” We all looked at her and I said, “Why would we want to do that?” She said “Several years ago Gene (her

We went to a little store called the Cottage Health Food Store in Provo, UT. Gene drove us in his Volkswagen beetle with the 30 bottles in the backseat. With one bottle in my hand, we walked into the store. Upon entering, a little, old lady walked around the counter, introduced herself to me as Emma Chittock and said, “What can I do for you?” I handed her the bottle of cayenne pepper capsules and said, “I think we have a product that you would be interested in.” Taking the bottle, she stared at it in complete silence for what seemed like an eternity. I didn’t say a word, as I didn’t know what to say. Finally, she said, “I will take 6 of these.” I was in shock as I had not even figured what price to charge. I knew that every bottle cost us $1.00 to produce (not counting the hours that it took to fill the capsules and put them in the bottles). I quickly thought a 15% markup sounded pretty good. I said, “How about $1.15 per bottle?” She retrieved her checkbook and wrote a check for the product., As she was doing that, Gene went out to the car and brought in an additional 5 bottles. She placed the bottles on a shelf in a less than ideal spot. We thanked her and left. We were elated - our first store and first …show more content…
Once again, I took a bottle and Gene and I entered and found the manager up on the 2nd floor. As we approached the manager’s desk, he looked up and said “What can I do for you?” Because my last sales approach with Emma had worked, I handed him a bottle and said, “I have a product that I think you would be interested in.” He took the product in his hands and looked at it - again that quiet, silent moment that seemed like an eternity, and said something much different than Emma, “Why would I be interested in this product?” I quickly thought of Gene’s story so I related it to him. He thought some more and finally said, “I will take a gross.” 144 went through my mind and I knew that we only had 24 left. That is the only time in my life that I ever reduced somebody’s order as I said, “Would you settle for 24 bottles?” He agreed, so Gene went out and grabbed the additional 23 bottles. The manager wrote us a check, found a spot on the shelves next to the candy and placed them there. We were ecstatic - 2 stores and 2 sales. What a successful day! We hurried home and put the family members back to work in producing more capsules by hand. It quickly dawned on me that at $1.15 we would never make a profit to pay for the labor that it too so we readjusted the price. A week later, Gene and I went to the health food store, and found that one had already sold. We then
When innovations are made, companies sometimes struggle with pricing. The innovations may or may not meet the consumers desires. Medi-cult developed In Vitro Maturation (IVM) technique of making women pregnant. However, the success rate is low. Furthermore, the women are reluctant to repeat the process once the first trial fails. It is also expensive. A major threat to Medi-Cult is the stiff competition by other pharmaceutical companies. Good pricing criteria should be adopted to compete effectively while improving on meeting consumers’ demands.
After they got to the restaurant, and had been seated at the table they began to talk about work. He asked, “So how did you become an intern at an electric co-op?” “Well,” she said, “I have always had a passion for how green energy and giving back to the community, so one day I went into the office with my father and asked if I could get some information. Keep in mind I was only “9” at the time, had a very squeaky voice, and probably not more than three feet tall, so my head didn’t reach the counter. Well the lady said, “What information would you like to have darling?” and I said that I wanted to learn about how electricity works so that I can help conserve energy, and help the environment. She just sat there and stared at me, then she handed me a business card then said “Good luck.” I called the number the next day, and to my joy received an eccentric reply from the Administrator of the Eastern District: he asked if I would like to come and visit him and of course I said
In the article “Digging In’ by Robert J. Hastings it was about the closing of the Old West Side Mine meaning that the end of the mine resembling a nice, steady job for the next 8 years. A family in the town there was a coal order form the welfare office, then a few days on WPA, the family had a garden in the backyard, they had a couple pet chickens that gave those eggs. The mom and dad had strong strength, the dad had willingness to take any job and mom’s ability was to stretch every available dollar. Both the mom and dad needed to find a job, but most of the “jobs” were those you made for yourself.
It is the idle man who is the miserable man” (“Benjamin Franklin Quotes” 1). Franklin believes that in order to be successful and happy one must be working. Idleness is defined as a state of unemployment, not working or active, simply doing nothing (“Idleness, Folly”). Sitting around being lazy will not result in a job offer, working towards finding a job will result in an offer. Franklin believes people are in control of their own economic stability or instability in which being idle will not only tax oneself causing unemployment, but not being able to return from a state of idleness and regain work experience. It is estimated that about 47% of people are not currently looking for a job while continuing to collect unemployment compensation (Cox). With the American economy trying to rebuild itself slowly, in March of 2016 there were 215,000 jobs added to the job market in order to create more opportunity in lowering the unemployment rates (Gillespie). This increase in the job market creates a push for people to go out and try to receive a job that may not have stood out before. In a recent article by Jerry Thomas, he wrote “We need the best thinking and hard work of everyone to rebuild American economy” (Thomas). With the American economy working towards moving away from a state of idleness, Franklin’s ideas about industry are proven to still be current. Franklin stated “Whereas industry gives
As many people thought to have a job was a source of security guaranteed the weekly pay check and wouldn’t try to make it on their own.
Mrs. Acres are use to her small - scale hometown, where she started making her pies. She only intends to sell them to local supermarkets and select family restaurants (Bethel University,2012). She leads a small part time group to support her prepare a 100 pies a week. Once the pies became popular and in demand she have no choice but to expand
You took a unique perspective on this post and I applaud you for it. It is a mix of lack of doctor’s knowledge and the government for not knowing that is starvation in my opinion. The rich tend to be greedy so when very people sell something, of course, they are going to jack up the prices. I really liked how you spotlighted how starvation affecting women and explained why they are at such an unfair disadvantage.
“Speaking of business, I never got to finish before the subject of Las Vegas took over. I had a lawyer draw up papers to do a gradual sale of my business to Maria who will run Domestic Deepclean as she sees fit. Sure, it spells out that I’ll get an income from it, but because of her insistence, not that I’m particularly concerned one way or the other. She has some good ideas. I hope they all work for her and grows the customer base she already has with new people. To do it, she gets all the inventory, equipment, and the building, of course. Every one of the current clients know Maria because they dealt with her first-hand. They love her, but in the past we were a one-two punch. So as a result, Maria and I had a company meeting last week with
One day a family friend Sylvia decided to go to CiCi’s Pizza the most popular pizza spot in her area and place an order to go for her family. She decided to order 2 large pizzas and a batch of the cinnamon rolls. Once she got home she decided to try one of the cinnamon rolls and began to choke on something. After getting it dislodged from her throat Sylvia noticed that it was a piece of plastic that had caused her to choke. Sylvia went back into her kitchen where the rest of the cinnamon rolls were and noticed not only did the one she eat have plastic but a few others did also, so she took out her phone and took a quick picture of it for her evidence. Sylvia immediately called the store and informed them on what had happened but, the lady on
Plunging into the old , radiator-heated, turn-of-the-century house, I first noticed the smell. It was a mixture of herbs, homemade soup simmering on the stove, old dusty furniture, and moth balls in drawers of outgrown clothes. The sunlight beamed in on the kitchen table, which bore a bowl of perfectly ripened grapes and peaches. Against the far wall, a white sink, now slightly yellowed with age, reposed sedately between a new, white refrigerator whirring steadily in its corner, and an equally gleaming washing machine. On the left wall and above the stove, hung my aunt’s collection of potholders, lovingly made and presented to her by well-meaning nieces. Opposite the stove was an open mahogany door, varnished so that it was like glass
Often times, I can’t help but wonder what my life would be like if I haven’t been exposed to the world of business; a wonderful career that changed my life completely. I have taken interest in business career because I love calculating numbers and interacting with people; But most importantly, my fascination in business came from my grandfather. He taught me many valuable tips on how to be a successful person, and most certainly how to run a business. He was not only a successful businessman, but also a respected individual. One of the businesses that he owned was a company called “Wu Long Tea Factory”. The main thing that they produce is tea of course, but they also have products such as cakes, candies, and all kinds of stuff. By being
I am with Melissa, my beautiful girlfriend, and we are visiting Chili’s for my observation. Before you walk into Chili’s you see this monstrous red chili outside just in case you forgot where you are at. When you walk into the Chili’s bar area you are instantly greeted by the hostess that would escort your to your seat. The hostess’ name is Tori and she is a short hispanic, teenager that is very nice. Tori asks, “Is it just two for the night?” I say, “Yes” and then she asks, “Where would you guys like to sit?” I tell her, “In the bar, preferably in a booth please,” then she put it in the system and proceeded to
“We started selling milled and wholeseed chia seeds in packaging we had designed ourselves. Our main expense was to build a clean-room.”
Improving our price perception can fix our current conflict with our aggressive competitors in the market to sale natural foods. For a while our company has been referred to as “The Whole Pay Check”, because of our high prices for natural products (Npr.org). Unfortunately, we have been perceived this way because of our prices and that is something we aim to change. We must focus on improving our price perception instead of reducing our prices. As a company, “We recognize we need to move faster and go deeper to rebuild traffic and sales and create a solid foundation for our long-term profitable growth, said Mackey, who was recently named one of the world 's best-performing CEOs by the Harvard Business Review”( Austin Business Journal). Our goals for the future demands a new change that we should definitely accept this proposal to improve our price perception rather than lowering our prices , which results in less growth and no competitive advantage.
The last alternative would be to continue with what the company has already done and just produce many of the products. This choice would mean waiting in vain for another growth in the product’s life cycle. Ms. Jill could supply and distribute more, making the product very available. In case the other brands lack supplies, the consumers in grocer stores can conveniently choose the Snacks to Go products because of its availability.
