• Students were trained for everyday life in the colonies. • Children learned to read and write from ages 6 to 8. • Education was geared towards reading, writing, and arithmetic. • Students were taught by a paddle shaped board with paper sheet attached called a hornbook. • Dame schools were provided for women who were usually not allowed in grammar schools. • Dame schools were taught by women in their home which had no desks, maps, or blackboards. • There was no separation between religion and the schools. • Teachers were not college graduates. • Girls were given lessons on how to run a home. • Teachers could spank or whip the students or sit them in the corner if they misbehaved.
- As well as the teachers could do anything to their students as long as they were
The children are usually disciplined by being sent to their room, time out, and taking toys away.
Punishment! A word that we all shy away from, but do we really know what punishment meant to kids who went to school in one room school houses? They endured many physical punishments, such as hitting the child on the knuckles with a steel tipped ruler or standing for a long period of time with your arms straight out in front or to the sides of you or even having to take cold showers. Although some teachers preferred the mental embarrassment route which included, wearing a dunce cap, being forced sit on a high stool beside the teachers desk at the front of the room or if it were a boy they would have banished them to the girls cloak room. The important information is what made them get in trouble. Things like not properly addressing the teacher as ma’m or miss, speaking out of line, or anything that was considered disrespectful such as not standing up when addressing the teacher, or using slang and not proper English. The point is these were very
Most importantly, the parents of the children would know beforehand that their children could and would be punished if they acted up in school. Some parents would be happy to know that their children are being held responsible for their actions, and that they were being chastised for their misdeeds. Furthermore, other parents may be upset about the actual physical punishment, but, with this decree in place, they could not complain.
Women were not taught how to read or write or given any sort of education. They were supposed to stay at home
Being in the classroom should feel like a reward for students. If students feel like being in a classroom is punishment, then any behavior they can show to get out of that environment is being reinforced. Classrooms should be places where students always feel valued and
The goal of the staff was to ultimately change that behavior and also change the child’s mindset. My next application term I chose is Discipline, to describe some of the methods that were used to correct and change bad behavior. I chose three subcategories of Discipline to best describe how the school monitored behavior. The way Archway disciplined was always very consistent and they made sure to correct students usually only when needed. The style of discipline that was applied was based on how detrimental the behavior was. For behavior that was not severely harmful, only the teachers would get involved and they would use inductive reasoning. Reinforcement and Punishment techniques were also used. For behavior that was uncontrollable, Corporal Punishment was
For example, in elementary school, teachers spent each day of the week on one specific subject. They used various methods to connect the subject to other subjects, and showed us how to implement that subject into everyday life. They required us to be disciplined, quiet, and respectful. Teachers also used corporal punishment when students misbehaved, and then notified parents who took the same disciplinary action as teachers.
Some teachers or administrative staff treat students unfairly. A student athlete or a well known student in the town does not receive as much punishment as a student who is troublesome or doesn’t have the best home life. For example, if a student athlete does not turn their homework in on time they receive a warning and are told to bring it the next day. If a misbehaved student or student has a rough home life doesn’t turn their homework in on time because they were trying to find their next meal, they are zapped and get sent to the
In school now, teacher’s punishment for students are limited. However, when my parents and grandparents went to school a teacher could grab them by the hand and spank them with a paddle. If teachers had powers like the Greek gods they wouldn’t have students cheating like you see now days. Greek gods and goddess had unique powers which caused them to have unique punishments.
So, I was in 5th grade and we had a mean recess monitor who was very strict. Her name was Mrs. Homan. She was the Oak Grove East librarian for the year and was in charge of recess. She made us walk around the blacktop area and be quiet for the entire time. It was annoying and none of the students liked her and Mrs. Turner did the same thing. If one student was talking when the lights were off she punished everybody for one person’s actions. The students had the this-is-really-annoying look on their faces. When one person gets in trouble, then the whole class SHOULD NOT have to be punished for their actions.
Fourth, schools should think other solutions to replace the suspension and arrest. Sometimes the punishment is required to control students. Instead of expelling and suspension, they can do volunteer works or clean the classroom.
In most cases, the teacher is the only one in position to put a stop to it, and soon find themselves ill-equipped to do so.
The punishment system could involve being detained after class, minimizing class activity time, negative points and letters to parents. I feel that students need to be kept in check at all times and that the reward and punishment systems would help the students stay on track because they would want to receive the reward and try to stay away from the punishment. The subjects in school that should be offered to students are several levels of math and science courses, philosophy, language arts including an intensive writing class, mandatory foreign language classes with a range of language preferences and electives such as art, theater, music/voice lessons and other creative forms of expression. Also schools should have a mandatory fitness class, ethics classes and optional cooking classes or other various electives. I believe these classes are a good balance to the student and would provide an enriching and rewarding learning experience.
It is a fact that classroom management and discipline has always been a challenge to pre-service teachers as they do not know and have not acquired the necessary skills to deal with unruly learners effectively. Often so, teachers in service use strategies that are incorrect or rather unacceptable; whether this is done intentionally or under certain desperation to gain control and respect of the learners. It is prevalent across the globe. Although the South African system has used corporal punishment for many years to maintain discipline and management in the classroom; there have always been other alternative ways which are effective and better as opposed to the harsh way of discipline. The Constitution of South Africa specifically banned the use of this harsh treatment because of the awareness that children are vulnerable and defenceless; therefore they are the ones who are at risk of being victims of crime, beatings and psychological trauma that are an ultimate result of being bullied by adults. My claim is that strategies used to maintain classrooms in public schools are not acceptable if they cause a negative effect to the development of our children. And I will argue that there are other alternatives that could be used to make sure that the classes run smooth and without causing any intimidation to either the learners or teachers in this industry, as the South African Journal of Education mentions that
