Why We Need To Rehabilitate Prisoners

For most that have spent their lives in prison, the outside world is a place that is being missed out on. When freedom is received to be part of the outside world again, living a normal life is valued, making it easy to fit into. There are many people who only experience prison for a short period of time and don’t get to fully learn that the outside world is a place not to be scared of, and learning from mistakes can change lives forever. People who don't learn from mistakes usually go back into the real world with the same or even worse behaviours than when they first entered, this is why prisons need to be better equipped to rehabilitate prisoners in a shorter time frame. Imprisoning people has been around for many centuries and can be an effective way of teaching someone a lesson, but now days the amount of people going to prison has increased majorly, and every year the amount of fully rehabilitated prisoners that are released is very little. Short term sentences are known to be the least effective, and studies taken in 2012 show this. Nearly 50% of short sentenced prisoners will re-offend within a year of first being sentenced, and most likely at a more concerning level. 70% of people in prison at the moment will be released within the next 7 months, which is a significant problem, as over half will end up in prison again, minimizing the number of prison cells available for serious offenders. On the other hand, long term sentences are known to be the most effective compared to short term sentencing, and statistics taken by the NZ police show this. People who spend a long period of time in prisons, have a greater chance of not re-offending in the future, and receive a chance to be fully educated, to be able to find a job so that they are able to support their families
