There is nothing like spending the day outdoors and having quality time with my dad. He is an avid sportsman and has been sharing his passion with me since I was young. Hunting and fishing allow me to get away from my daily pressures while experiencing the great outdoors.

In the past, I spent a summer researching the effects of climate change on small mammals under the mentorship of a college professor, and greatly enjoyed the experience. However, participation at the National Wildlife Refuge will foster a myriad of different skills. For instance, I will learn how to identify and handle different species like reptiles and amphibians, control the growth of invasive plants, test water quality, build fences or other structures, and interact with visiting groups. These activities, none of which I hold experience with, will provide me with insight into my consideration of working at a national wildlife refuge after graduating from Notre

For the first time in modern history on a hiking trail near the Cascades' Mount Shasta, a gray wolf pack has been witnessed since its kind was hunted to extinction nearly a hundred years ago.

Long before the settlers started to make the United States their home, “American Indians lived long beside the Gray Wolf before settlers started to come here.” (Rowe, Mark) The wolf is native to the North American continent and has been inhabiting its land for centuries. It is a canid species, or member of the canine family and is a cunning, smart, fast, and sly animal. Gray wolves range in color from black, brown, gray, and white and also look like a grown German Shepherd. They are well known for traveling in family sizes from 7-9 wolves, led by the alpha male and have a mate. They are a fierce animal that has been researched extensively because of their unique qualities and that they are near extinction.

The Ninemile Wolves is a compelling nonfiction story told by Rick Bass, while Bass approaches the wolves with a mixture of awe, compassion, and fascination; others in the area are less welcoming, including some local ranchers, hunters and politicians. The wolves are studied by Bass, Rick Jimenez, and others of how they are endeavoring for their presence in the Ninemile Valley in Montana. Bass consumes his reader into his work by using both scientific and spiritual relevance of the wolves, and how they balance the ecosystem. While the biologist are cheering for the survival of the Ninemile pack ranchers, hunters, and politicians are concerned that they will attack livestock and decimate the population of elk and deer. However, despite all the stereotypes put into place the wolves survive off small mammals, and stray away from large pray. Bass anthropomorphizes the wolves by saying they have a soul like humans, and their spirit has an effect on the Ninemile Valley.

The Endangered Species Act was enacted by Congress in 1973. According to Reference 1, this act requires the federal government to protect endangered species, threatening species, and their critical habits. Animals are protected from being harmed, sold, or traded and plants are protected if they are on federal property. The conservation success of this act is very important because it saves wildlife and plants from going extinct. Many people do not realize that the loss of a species can be disastrous for our ecosystem. Reference 1 lists six success stories of endangered species under the act. The success stories are of the bald eagle, florida panther, gray wolf, grizzly bear, peregrine falcon, and the red-cockaded woodpecker. The Endangered

Veterinarian Versus Wildlife Biologist Finding a career you want to work in for the rest of your life is a very important decision. I’m considering becoming a veterinarian or wildlife biologist (WB). A veterinarian works to keep the health of animals and to improve public health. They also diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals. A WB studies animals and other wildlife to discover how they interact with their ecosystems.

After years of selective breeding and taming, the hunters finally came across some wolves that were able to listen to commands and do what they were ordered to do. These wolves did not look like the first ones with which humans came into contact. Their size, coloring, senses and even the length of their coat or swimming ability reflected the environment in which they lived. These environments could have ranged from anything since hunters do not stay in one place for very long. These wolves probably did not reflect their gray ancestors much anymore. The color of their coat could have become brown, black, or even yellow depending on where they were taken. Since the beginning of my hunting days, I have seen the number of new youth hunters sky rocket every year. For example, since the beginning of duck dynasty, there was a new wave of duck hunters across the nation. This is a great tool for the informal education of hunting to the younger generations. Since I have begun my formal education in hunting, I have realized the amount of knowledge taught, overlaps with lessons successful in everyday life. For example, state game wardens give a hunter’s education course to learn the safety of hunting, but during the seminar there is moral and ethical lessons that are underlining. Throughout my journey into my formal education I have learned new skills, developed new traits that help me grow as an individual in society, and skills that can I can pass down to others down the road

Richard Nixon once said, “Nothing is more priceless and worthy of preservation than the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” The world is full of a wide variety of animal and plants. On the other hand, some of that variety is endangered. The definition of an endangered species is a species that is at a critical risk of extinction. Not only can different species be endangered, they can also be categorized into six major categories which are; vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered, and extinct in the wild. The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) is one of the main resources for the categorization of these species. The Genus name is Macaca silenus and it is a part of the endangered species category. This lion tailed macaque is endangered because of deforestation of their habitat. It is estimated that there are less than one thousand individuals remaining in their habitats in India. During the last few decades there has been a dramatic decrease. This species has declined due to habitat fragmentation (Singh). This form of deforestation is caused because of the major increase in agriculture in the Indian mountains. While deforestation is the leading cause in their endangered status, it is not the only reason. Over the years there has been an increase in shelters and safe zones for this species, but will their population continue to decrease?
