First and foremost, the fight for women’s rights is something that has occurred throughout time not only in the United States, but in every part of the world. When it comes to the United States, one cannot deny that it was an important historical event. “The struggle for women’s suffrage in the United States had occupied better part of a century” (Source 1). Truly a struggle, for it was not acknowledged by men in the past, primarily white man who had full rights in the nation. Susan B. Anthony was an important leading figure of the Suffrage Movement and contributed to the Suffrage Movement.

In 1848 women decided that they wanted to have a voice. Women from all over the United States became tired of listening and abiding by the rules that men put in place. Many men thought all women were good for was cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. When the country went to war women were left behind to take care of everything while the men were gone. This was an eye opener for most women, and that is when they came to the conclusion they were good for more. There was so much women were not allowed to do that men could, and a lot of it could only change if women had the right to vote.

Generations of women fought courageously for equality for decades. The ratification of the Nineteenth amendment was vindication for so many women across the country. After having spent so many years oppressed and unable to make way for themselves, women everywhere were growing tired of being unable to own property, keep their wages and the independence that an academic education gave them. The decades that ensued brought with them various female activists, men that supported them and a division of its own within the movement. The women’s suffrage movement lasted 71 years and cam with great discourse to the lives of many women who fought for the cause.

Economically and socially the movement gained women more rights and privileges. The Women's Rights Movement granted women more political rights like property rights. It changed how both genders saw one another and themselves. But did it really give women and men equality? Did it really make everything better?

The right to vote, the right to go to college, the right to own property. Some people take it as a right that they had all along. That is far from the truth. Suffragists fought long and hard for many years to gain women suffrage. Before the suffrage movement began, women did not have the right to vote, child custody rights, property rights, and more (Rynder). The American Women Suffrage Movement was going to change that. People known as suffragists spoke up, and joined the effort to get women their rights. Without them, things would be very different today. The American Suffrage Movement lasted over the course of many years and changed the lives of American women forever.

They did not have the right to vote nor were they able take action in anything. They also did not have a say in anything surrounding them. Government decisions were only taken by men. As years went by, women felt the need that they had to have a say in stuff. Today nearly fifty percent of the population in the United states are Women according to census. Considering that the average woman takes part of governmental elections, it is no surprise that women have such a big influence in the government side. The Women’s Suffrage Movement of the 1920’s worked to grant women the right to vote nationally, thereby allowing women more political equality. Due to many industrial and social changes during the early 19th century, many women were involved in social advocacy efforts, which eventually led them to advocate for their own right to vote and take part in government agencies. Women have been an integral part of society, working to help those in need, which then fueled a desire to advocate for their own social and political equality. While many women worked tirelessly for the vote, many obstacles, factions, and ultimately time would pass in order for women to see the vote on the national level. The 19th Amendment, providing women the right to vote, enable women further their pursuit for full inclusion in the working of American society.

America is constantly progressing, in the last one hundred and fifty years this country has been a land of segregation and hate speech, where only white straight men are deemed fit to run the country. The United States has evolved into a country of diversity and understanding. These changes have been made through the devotion of seemingly ordinary citizens yearning for a change, the supreme court getting cases associated with civil rights and laws that have been set in place to ensure the safety and security of all people who enter the country no matter the color of their skin, sexual orientation or gender. In 1776, Abigail Adams writes to her husband, John Adams, asking him to “remember the ladies” in the new code of laws. Adams replies, “The men will fight the despotism of the petticoat.” Through feminist movements and new laws being passed, women gained the right to vote. The women’s suffrage movement began in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention.

Women in America never felt equally to the men. They never felt as if they had the same potential or freedoms the men had. Women, like men, felt they were entitled these rights. This lead to many campaigns, protests, etc. Women fought for these rights for years with little to show for it. But, on August 26th, 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote. In the 1920’s women wanted equality, which fueled the suffrage movement that allowed key women to lead the charge and fight for reforms.

The idea of women gaining the right to vote was one such of a tale. Men, and women never thought they would see the day where women were considered equal suffragists. Until August 18, 1920 when the nineteenth amendment was ratified into the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony died before they could see the day where women would become equal. Carrie Chapman Catt worked hand in hand with Susan B. Anthony, and served as the president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Alice Paul served as a role model for women. She worked for women’s suffrage while in jail, and proved to her opponents, that the day where women could vote would come. Though these women did not always work together, working towards the same cause allowed them to accomplish their true dream: women’s suffrage.

We chose women’s suffrage because we believe it is a big part of history that people underestimate. After the loss of women’s rights to vote, Elizabeth Cady Stanton took a stand and helped the atification of the 19th Amendment. Women were and are a huge part of our society before losing their rights.

Women used many different methods to earn the right to vote in the women’s Suffrage Movement. One of the methods is a parade, The parade took place in Washington D.C. on the day that president Woodrow Wilson was going to be sworn in for his second presidency. Large crowds that consisted of many men drinking then throwing the bottles at the women who were marching and riding floats in the parade. Also they were yelling at the women, and this lead to the crowds violently attacking the girls and the police did nothing. At the end of all the fighting there were 100 people hospitalized. But thankfully the newspaper supported the women.
