Virtually, every known society past and present, women have not been treated as an equal to men. UN agencies and most governments agree on the principle of gender inequality. The question at large is what accounts for the difference between the rhetoric of equality and the reality of inequality? The single aspect of gender inequality of men and women is that women obtain insufficient pay from their male counterparts in the workforce. Throughout this paper the reader will recognize the role that the international and “traditional” norms that society takes part of in women receiving equal pay. Secondly, this essay will discuss the patriarchal manifestation within the women wage gap and how it has been resisted by the government. Lastly, how different strategies are taking place in seeing which areas to obtain equal pay for women.

The role that international and traditional norms have is that women are paid less than men. Women in most countries earn on average only 60 to 75 per cent of men’s wages (World Bank Gender Data Portal 2014). On the international scene there are many laws and goals they state that is equal or that should be equal pay between men and women, however, that does that seem to happen.
