Basketball was invented by Dr. Naismith. (He looks like teddy Roosevelt) Dr. Naismith, with all of his imaginative planning, could not have imaged his Peach Basket game would turn into my favorite indoor sport. Originally, there was no set rule on the number of players. The idea was that the game could be played by any number of players at one time. However that never worked, so they changed the rule from any number of players to 9. But In 1897 they changed it to five because nine was too many players. Originally, the game was played with peach baskets or 18 square boxes hung from the balconies of the running tracks of most indoor places. So every time someone would make a basket someone would half to get a ladder to get the ball back.

Dr. James Naismith was a canadian physical education instructor. He invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA. The first game ever played was on December 21st, 1891. The equipment used in the first game was a far cry from what is used today. A peach basket was used as the hoop, and the a soccer ball became the first basketball. The YMCA had a big role in spreading the game around the country. American soldiers also introduced basketball to any country that they went to during World War I and World War II. The NBA (National Basketball Association) is a major factor in sports. As the years have gone by the NBA has changed drastically. The players, jerseys, team names, and the teams logos. Many more things changed as well. The baskets changed, the court patterns, some rules, how the teams play and how they run things.

People have been playing basketball since 1891. The way that basketball has been played has changed quite a bit, especially how someone shoots a basketball. It started out with having players feet squared to the basket at shoulder width apart as the way everyone shot or taught it. Now more and more people are learning to shoot with their feet turned away from the basket and using an armband that prevents a player from using their guide hand to help them threw the motion of there shot.

The National Basketball Association, or the NBA, is a men’s professional basketball league in the USA. The National Basketball Association was born in 1949 after the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League merged as one. Maurice Podoloff was elected head of the new league that consisted of seventeen teams which came from cities and towns all across the country. The NBA did not have a great start with its teams dwindling to only eight teams in the 1950s. At this point, the league transformed the game with the addition of the shot clock. The shot clock in the NBA is 24 seconds, meaning the offensive team has 24 seconds from the time they inbound the ball until the ball hits the rim on their side of the court. This addition increased the pace of the game and made it more fun for fans to watch. Their transformation worked, and the league returned to a financially stable one in the 1960/70s. Today, the NBA has millions of fans from all walks of life, all over the world. The league now consists of 30 teams from various states in North America as well as one team from Canada. The teams are divided into two conferences and then three divisions of five teams each. To play the sport of basketball there are players; five on the court at a time, coaches, a basketball, two hoops, high-top shoes to protect player’s ankles, and a court with specific lines painted out to represent boundaries.

Yet many thing have changed in the sport over the years. The game of basketball has changed with the number of players on the court. (“Hooptactics.com”) says, first there was no set rule on the number of players. The idea was that the game could be played by any number of players at the same time. However, that did not work out. After playing games with up to 50 people, the number of players were cut down and then games were played with nine players on each side - the reason being that 18 students showed up for Naismith's class. Five players became the mandatory team size in 1897. Also, they changed the substitutions in the game. Again (“hooptactics.com”) says, “in the beginning, players were not allowed to re-enter the game.” Once a player left the game, they were not allowed back in that game. The rule was adjusted twice before they officially allowed a player to leave and enter a game many times during a game.

James Naismith was a PE teacher at a school in Springfield Massachusetts. He wanted a less injury prone sport in which to play. He came up with the idea of putting a peach basket on a railing on the balcony of a gym and used a soccer ball to shoot with. The student body originally wanted to name it after him, but he turned them down and insisted they call the game basketball.

The style and play of the game of basketball looked completely different from then to now. The environment is a little calmer and the look and shape of it has evolved in a way that was probably unexpected. The court did not have a three point line and the jerseys and clock were unfamiliar to me, also. There was not a three point line so everything was considered two points and free throws one point. Now, there is a three point line and it is worth three points and it further back which makes it a little difficult. This is why it is worth so many points. The clock on the wall was an analog clock and it showed the time in a way I have never seen before. We use digital clocks now making it a little easier to tell how much time is left. I noticed

Basketball later boomed so much that they later wanted to create a league. The first league was called the BAA. That stands for the Basketball Association of America. The initial president was Maurice Podoloff. This all happened November 1, 1946. The league started with some teams that were from some small cities and then there were those that were from bigger cities. “On August 3rd, 1949, representatives met in the Empire State Building to finalize a merge” “(NBA is Born.)” The new league had been joined from the ABA and the NBA. The new league was called the NBA, which had 17 teams that represented both small and big cities. Some new rules were set in place that outlawed zone defense and added a 24 second shot clock. A problem was created when the students need a winter game to entertain them, that is when Naismith came up with the general idea of basketball. They use a soccer ball as the ball and 2 peach baskets as hoops; although whenever someone scored a basket they would have to climb a latter to get the ball down.

The final position known as the center, he is in most cases the guy who rebounds and defends at high levels. These are the original five positions of basketball that are still around today. These positions also come with multiple rules that have been changed since the first thirteen rules. One of the rules that have been changes is rule number three, this says that if you catch the ball you have to stay in that spot the change that was made to this rule is that you now have to dribble and move up court with the ball. Another rule that was changed when the NBA came around was the two fifteen-minute halves which is now four twelve-minute quarters with a fifteen-minute half-time. The hoops in the basket was replaced by a metal rim at a decade. The was closed into a peach basket. These types of games revolve around the goal of infiltrating the opponent's territory to score a goal while simultaneously protecting their own goal. The original thirteen rules of the game were directed to prevent body contact. Rules such as no restriction from getting the ball, no running with the ball and no holding or pushing an opponent made up some of the first rules of the game (Naismith, 1996, p.54). Historical changes in the game of basketball between 1893 and 2010 served as catalysts to increase the pace and scoring output while fundamentally altering the strategic components of the game.
