Diversity is the uniqueness which every employee brings to the workplace in an organization or establishment. Examples of differences include nationality, belief, disabilities, physical appearance, race, gender, age, educational background, sexual orientation, and work experience, social and family status. At the workplace, valuing diversity means creating a work environment that respects and includes individual variation by maximizing the potential of all employees or in which every employee feels included. The public in this present day must deal with compound problems of an increasingly global society and must deal well with multicultural perspectives of increasingly different people worker at the locality and around the world. This coursework centers on attempts to understand the challenges faced within the workplace as a result of diversity. The aim of this coursework is to identify these challenges at workplace, discover the causes and find ways to combat these challenges at workplaces. There are several challenges of diversity in the workplace. For poor diversity training and education, it has been criticized as being too confrontational and overly oppressive by organizations managing diversity initiatives. The diversity training exercise should not degrade or embarrass people. On the contrary, through well-designed approach, diversity trainings should enable people to know their faults of oppressive attitude and see how their actions affect others. Another challenge is the failure to discuss the profound issues of prejudice and marginalization which effective diversity initiatives discloses and addresses the reason people and groups are consistently marginalized in an organization. Additionally, there is lack of genuine diversity leadership in which organizational management can talk or gain information on diversity. Diversity can be shown through many different aspects such as ethnicity, environments we were raised or things we have experienced. For me, I bring diversity through experiences with the various people that I have worked with. Every summer of middle school and high school I would go on mission trips with my youth group. For these trips instead of going to other countries like a lot of people do, we would go to various cities in the United States to help the people there. My youth group has gone to cities like Newark, Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, and Nashville. In these cities, we worked with the boys and girls club, assisted in the homeless shelters, worked at the food banks and fixed up homes for the people that needed it in those areas.
Diversity means to value and respect the differences and individuality of people. This means to embrace the differences between people and to treat a person’s race, culture, religious beliefs, age, sexual orientation, gender, physical and mental characteristics etc. with respect.

Usually, there is a preferential standpoint taken on the matter and it can be either display a high or a low context culture of diversity. According to Mason (2013) Workforce diversity has been described as “a double-edged sword; it has the potential for positive and negative outcomes” (p.659). Workplace diversity is important in a business setting because it carries forward a combination of different types of people to work together in unity, encourages uniqueness, innovative, creative approaches, and supports interesting divergent ideas to accomplish tasks or goals.
From Hollywood to the the social sector, diversity, rather the lack thereof, has been a topic of conversation. Although many organizations have begun to advocate for diversity, more work must be done. Across the social sector,women and people of color remain severely underrepresented in leadership positions. Organizations must become intentional about creating a diverse workforce and implementing inclusive policies that foster positive work environments. When employees feel represented and included they are happier and more likely to contribute to fulfilling the organization's mission.
