World History: The Great Depression

This act was created in 1974 there are many events that could have impacted the need for such a policy. One event that impacted the need for the RHYA is the Great Depression. The Great Depression led to about 400,000 young boys being homeless. Another important event is the Vietnam War, though it was coming to an end around the time that the act was passed, it lasted for many years and effected the family structure of American households. The draft caused by the war made a lot of families turn into one income families, which could have made teens need to leave home before they were old enough to support themselves in order to leave more resources for the rest of the family.

There was a steel mill company created in the 1900 in Gary by a president of the United States name Elbert H. Gary it was named after him. The steel started getting popular because everyone nationwide was using it to build railroads and homes. There three things they used to make steel such as iron ore, limestone, and coals. There was variety of coals that was used but the only one they use was called coke they had to burn a fuel that turned into coke. In order for them to make it, they had to make the coke burn at an extremely high temperature so they can produce it to melt big quantity of limestone and iron ore.

The Great Depression in the United States triggered when the American stock market crashed, causing America’s economy to have a downturn. The two long-term causes of the Great Depression were the stock market and consumer spending. When the prices were rising and wages became stagnant, people started to buy with credit and slowly reduced the amount they spent. The stock market was one of the long-term causes of the Great Depression because of speculation and abusing the stock market. Speculation is when the stock prices began to rise and it inflated a company’s worth. People also began to buy on a margin, which led to copious amounts of debt. Hoover was elected in 1928, before the Great Depression started. Hoover believed in voluntary cooperation, rugged individualism, and that the economy has cycles of up and down. Voluntary cooperation was a belief that the government should not force or control the people. Rugged individualism was the belief that people should only succeed through their own efforts. Since Hoover believed that the economy has cycles of up and down, his main approach was to wait and see. FDR was elected in 1932, during the time the Great Depression was in action. FDR was the kind of president who had a “try anything” philosophy. Because of this, he created the New Deal, which was when lots of laws and programs were passed in order to help reform, relief, and recover from the Depression. The great depression has been considered the biggest economic catastrophe of all times, it was a crisis that affected every individual in the United States and it extended to other countries in the globe. The unemployment rate grew from 5 million of people to 13 million from 1929 to 1930. Little kids were put into headwork in order to support their families, it was a period of desperation and starvation that left a mark in American history. So what open the doors to this economic crisis? The Great Depression is one of the most iconic time periods in United States and World history. The images of famished farmers in the country and unemployment lines in the cities are thoroughly taught. Decades later these memories teach Americans how far an economy can fall and what Americans can accomplish when faced with adversity. The confidence of Americans in an unfailing business system suddenly deteriorated and caused many to terminate involvement in any type of investment, business, or banking activity. This event and other factors contributed to the prevalence of the Great Depression. During this period of an economic recession, most Americans were affected by the drastic effects: life savings were lost, unemployment reached its highest of about 25 percent nationally and 80 percent in some industrial northern cities, and hunger, poverty, and homelessness escalated among countless families (Stewart 10). Many considered the Depression era to be one of the worst and longest economic decline in the history of America. Thus, the optimistic attitudes and positive results are frequently neglected. Although the Great Depression is widely known for its drastic, disastrous effects in the American history, it led to the growth, development, and progress in America by stimulating government reforms, encouraging creativity in entertainment, and instilling vital moral lessons in the people.

Two decades after the first World War happen another world war occurred known as World War II. There were many causes that led up to this war. The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, but Germany had to accept the responsibility of the war. Therefore, Germany economy went downhill and people were starving because of war debt. The Great Depression had a big effect on a lot of countries; therefore, countries started adopting fascism. Fascism was another problem that helped lead to World War II. One of the greatest declines in the world’s economic history was and still is the Great Depression. The Great Depression started in the late 1920’s and lasted until the end of the 1930’s. While the Great Depression was taking a toll on the whole economic world “13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the country’s banks had failed.” If the banks are failing no one has money to buy anything from the stock markets causing consumer spending to drop. Women faced heavy discrimination and social criticism during the Depression Even though through research it is proven that women helped nurse the nation back to health, many do not know of the aid of these strong women. Women had the task of keeping their family together when the principal moneymaker of the family was out of work. These women had to be creative with what they had. They could not create extravagant meals for their families anymore, but they made do with what they had. Many women joined the work force and would do jobs that men refused to do. These women worked as hard as they could to support their families during this difficult time despite the opinions of society. Essentially, the assistance of women went invisible for long years during and after this era. Things that once were of great importance no longer were, women’s roles during the Great Depression were practically outdated. In all actuality, women benefited society during the Great Depression much more than they have received credit for.

The October 1987 collapse in stock prices conjured visions of 1929 and the Great Depression. Focus on this period is natural because the 32 percent decline in stock values between the market closes of October 13 and 19, 1987, was of the magnitude of--indeed, it actually exceeded--the October 1929 debacle. Focus on this period is also appropriate because, despite all that has been learned since to help assure economic stability, we cannot be completely confident that history will not repeat itself. In the adventure films and Westerns, heroes are willing to challenge authority for their personal beliefs and feelings. They take actions based on individual beliefs, definitions of right and wrong, and the urge to complete their personal goals and dreams. The helpless antiheroes in screwball comedies present the situation during the Great Depression from another aspect. They cannot make choices themselves because of others’ intervention, and unfortunate things just happen to them. The denial of humanness is one feature of antiheroes. Powerlessness of antiheroes in the ridiculous world definitely reflects the desperate situation faced by the Americans during the Great Depression.
