For my second journal entry, I went to the World War 1 museum. I heard of some of my peers going there and I learned that the World War 1 museum is in Kansas City, so it is close by. I am really pleased I chose this museum to go to because it was really entertaining and I learned a great deal.
In school, so far, I have learned about World War 2 briefly, and that was when I read Number the Stars and other things like that in middle school. I have never actually learned about World War 1, and I knew nothing about World War 1 before I went to the museum. When I arrived at the museum, I learned a great deal of things that I did not know previously. I learned: that the war was fought on ground, water, and air; what America’s involvement was; what Kansas’s contribution was; and how high the number of casualties was.
In the museum, I learned that countless new firearms and strategies were used in the war which were not used before. I learned that on ground, trenches were dug up and used as shelter instead of standing in the open and firing at the enemy, which was what happened in previous wars. While at the museum, I saw dozens of artillery cannons and weaponries that were invented for use in World War 1 and for an advantage over the adversary. The artillery cannons were

Overseas, I think the Germans had a huge disadvantage because the British had the best navy in the world. The Germans wanted to destroy Britain’s economy, so the war would end quicker and tried to do so by sinking the merchant ships going to Britain. The U-boat, a type of submarine, was the weapon that the Germans used to sink merchant ships to Britain. I believe that the U-boats killed several innocent people that were just making a living. I also believe that it was wrong of the Germans to kill innocent people for their own gain. This is one of the main reasons that the U.S got
The advantages and disadvantages of both the British and Germans played key components in The Battle of Britain. The British had too few high performing Spitfires and too many Hurricanes. They did not have enough trained
World War I was the result of leaders' aggression towards other countries which was supported by the rising nationalism of the European nations. Economic and imperial competition and fear of war prompted military alliances and an arms race, which further escalated the tension contributing to the outbreak of war. One cause of the World War was militarism, which is a policy in which military preparedness is of primary significance to a situation. Another cause of the World War was nationalism. Nationalism is the pride and devotion form one towards his/her country. It played a great part in the causes of World War 1 because citizens wanted to stand up for their country, and fight for them. The third
Thesis: World War I is also known as The First International War, this war had helped the development of flight and aerial warfare, but with events and several countries planning on war this war had damaged all countries involved in it.
The second historical landmark that I went to was the Antietam Battlefield. Located in Sharpsburg, Maryland, the battle of Antietam was a battle between the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. The battle was fought on September 17, 1862, being called the “Bloodiest Day of American History” with a total of roughly 23,000 men killed in battle. The Union army, led by General George McClellan, defeated the Confederate Army, led by General Robert E. Lee, which is surprising because while they passed the Potomac River, a piece of paper including the Union’s battle tactics was left behind by one of the Confederate members. The Union then passed by the same spot weeks later and found this paper, which gave them the “advantage”. 5 days
Following the conclusion of the First World War, America began to flourish, especially through changes in technology, morality, and civil rights. Accompanying these developments came widespread discontent. Some argued with the old adage, “'If it ain't broke, don't fix it,”, while others insisted that constant advancements would lead to a better future for all. Best put by Donald Rea Hanson, to pick out reason for America’s prosperity “...would be difficult, if not impossible” (Doc C).
I have to admit that I had lost contact with my dear Jew friend, Aaron Bauer. It was unfortunate, but I sincerely believed that our decision was to lift each other’s burden and to protect this friendship. Integrating with one another had been a grave danger for both my wife and I, and Bauer understood our situations. I was no longer part of our secret Communist cell, for most of our Jewish members had dissolved into their separate ways following the aftermath of the Nuremberg Laws. Moreover, my wife and I had been busy with our full-time employment in the Volkswagen factory, for the KdF had promise us many trips and also the “People’s car.” There was time when I was excited about the KdF, but I immediately direct my thoughts to my Communists
6 p.m. on a wednesday i hear the sound of the attack planes above my head as i try to sleep. Adolf has been bombing us conti for the past seven days. The soldiers in my squad are tired and we are barely holding on to any hope of making it out of this situation alive. We have been experiencing terrible sights seeing my best friend blown up in front of my eyes from the bombs above. I continue to try and keep my soldiers in a positive mindset and encourage them that although we are starving and terrified, because of the bombs that seem to never end and the constant sound of the tanks roaring across the ground.
The end of World War II was not just the end of war, but also the beginning of a new nation and era in the United States. The war was not all great to those that returned; the most common problem during this time was the return of American vets to their country. Many mans returned to their hometowns and newly developed cities to finally settle down and begin a family. Many of them were soldiers and prewar students, but they didn’t have a set place within the post-war society, and this created stress and struggled. The veteran return from war created a population and housing boom created by the benefits that each had from the GI bill. The post-war economic demand and the expanding of the Civil Rights movement led to many conflicts and discrimination in housing, education, and jobs. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) created policies that reinforced forms of segregation, and regularly denied low-interest loans to non-whites.
WWI was a time of great change for Canadians. This time period was one of progress for many Canadian women. Although women were not allowed to enlist in the military during WWI, women did play a huge role during the war as nurses and ambulance drivers. As stated in the content section of Unit 2 activity 1, “images and news of nurses working hard at the front and sacrificing their lives helped to change notions of women as fragile, helpless creatures.” For many women this was their first time to work outside of the home, providing them “with many opportunities to prove their worth as citizens” (McClung). Another group that saw a period of progress during WWI was War Artists. As mentioned in the content section of activity 1 “The new medium of
A. Attention step: the change in the context and trend of war in terms of ferocity of the weapons and the increase in human/nations participation was occasioned by the industrial revolution and the French revolution.
I learned a lot from this trip. It was an unforgettable moment. I loved that Mr. Bierly presented all the pieces then for a person who was the first time visited a museum, I felt that was the best and even for others then already had been in one .I am very sure, it was better and more instructive. I liked that we could have our time to explore more pieces then tried to apply what Mr. Bierly taught in class. One thing that I experienced in the trip, while he was explaining each pieces of art, I was able to understand then apply my knowledge on it. I really enjoyed time in the
The Triple Alliance was a military alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed on March 20th 1882. Each country promised support in the event of attack.
Germany had chosen her allies badly, they had allied themselves to the decaying Austrian Empire, Ottoman Empire and Italy. Germany had chosen badly when relying on Italy to help out in the war since as soon as war was declared Italy pulled out of the alliance. Also Germany had to constantly assist the Austrian Empire in protecting their own territory. This led to problems as this exhausted troops that would and should have been sent to fight the war in the trenches. Germany also sent supplies that should have been sent to the soldiers fighting on the front line. If Germany had stronger and more reliable allies then the outcome of the war would have been different.
The Imperial War Museum exhibit on World War I was extremely detailed and really depicted how the war was. Walking through the exhibit, the people pass different sections of themes. For example, there was a section on why the war began, women in the war, on families, on camouflage and the battles, and lastly, the fallen soldiers. The fallen soldier section included different events that occurred during the war where lots of soldiers lost their lives. An example is the trench warfare, which is described as a deadly game of hide and seek against an almost invisible enemy. Soldiers were attacked above ground by snipers and below ground with massive explosive mines. The chances of survival were extremely low and these soldiers were in an extremely dangerous situation. To protect themselves from the enemy, soldiers created a new art of camouflage, a way to not be seen, including body armor and helmets for extra protection. But this new invention only could help so much. Death often came unseen and unheard. If a soldier was in the wrong place at the wrong time nothing and no one
Diary, day 105. Today I wake up knowing it could be my last day to live. I try to live my life each day as if it is my last, but that is not so easy being a soldier during a war. Mom, dad, I hope that you two one day see my diary, and know whatever has been happening to me while I've been gone. It's been tough trying to fight in the war. Everyday is just another day to suffer, sometimes I wish I was already dead. There's really nothing to lose anyways. I know i'm not the only one that thinks that. There just seems to be no hope left.
