Phoenix Art Museum

As Edgar Degas once said, “ Art is not what you see, but what others make you see”. The St. Louis Art Museum is a place for artist to display their art and give spectators the option to see art from a new perspective. This was the case for me. As we walked up to the beautifully structured building that stood so tall and wide, my expectations were extremely high. At first glance I notice the bronze statue of King Louis IX of France riding high on his horse. From this statue alone, my expectations of the art museum grew stronger. I have never been to an art museum before, so I wasn’t sure of what to expect. My first expectation was to see huge detailed sculptures right as I walked through the door. That expectation didn’t come true.

I wanted to hear more about the story of the family, Judge, and Mrs. E. B. Crocker and how and why they were so generous with their artwork. We first started in the new part of the house, where the modern art is displayed, and then we proceeded to go to the older part, which is inside two old houses, so I loved seeing all the old architecture and walking through all the rooms imagine what it was like when people lived there. The Museum included photos and information about the cultures and the history of Tucson. It was fascinating to see how people lived back in the day and compare it to now. It also had ancient artifacts from back in the day such as ancient cars, dresses, utensils, machines, beds and etc. Seeing the artifacts was very interesting to me because it enhances knowledge of their culture. The museum preserves artifacts of historical significance for the future generation.

The first room of the museum pulled in the audience with artwork from the 20th century. Although it may seem like artwork put together at the last minute, if you look closer, you will see something entirely different. Each piece had so much detail and unique qualities, such as style and art form, that you haven't see in many other museums before. It is important to appreciate the erratic design and character of each piece of art, but after seeing the entire museum, it is easy see the monumental difference between art now, and the art of our past. The Philbrook Museum of Art is easily the best museum Tulsa has to offer, and since I have been there before I probably wasn’t going into with a fresh mindset. However, I think the additional knowledge of art I learned through the couple of years in between allowed me to appreciate even more of the art there. I went there with Prof. Trotter and most of the class of art appreciation. I don’t think that most people that go there realize that the museum has such a rich history, and some of the art there is exceptional in my opinion. We went there November 6th, it was a sunny Friday, and I was able to get off work so it made the visit even more fun. The museum was located in the heart of one of richest neighborhoods of Tulsa, which makes sense considering the museum was once owned by a wealthy oilman. I went to the Philbrook not only to make sure I was able to write this essay, but because I truly love art throughout history.

This museum’s setting was not at all what I had expected and was rather disappointing. Most museums have a very solemn and academic mood that encourages silence and thoughtfulness. The Longmont Museum, however, is set up more like a childrens play area than an actual museum. There needs to be balance between children’s’ activities and adult academic learning. Children and adults should both be able to benefit from visiting the museum. I am glad that I got to Philadelphia Art Museum, I would have never have visited if I never took that class, it made me appreciate art more. I remember being excited seeing the familiar statue and art painting, that I learned in class. And explaining to my brother the history and meanings behind each art that I was familiar with. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, is known for its wide variety of architectural artworks, and its collection of Asian art. It also has many works of Medieval and Ancient art, while also showing some present art pieces. My experience through the museum went very well. Throughout the whole museum, there wasn’t any place to look that was boring, or didn’t involve art, which was very cool. I liked how the pieces were labeled with a helpful description, and were categorized in similar sections. All the art pieces having the interesting descriptions, helped me understand the visual, value, and history behind all of the pieces, which I found very helpful relating them to class.

My experience at the Oakland Museum was educational, I learn about the history of Asian American were mistreated and placed to work on the railroads. The artwork I saw at the Museum was quite amazing that look quite realistic. It was a photograph of lady holding a child during the time of the Great Depression. Another thing I saw was The Black Panther Party exhibit it was quite small, but I learn that African American does not want to be seen as second class citizen and being disrespected. This connects to our class in a way it relates to the documentary that we watched about the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party is a movement that revolutionized the Black community like the Black Lives Matter movement that is around today. This particular movement help fund a breakfast program for low income family which it is a model used in public schools. Lastly, I sat on a half opened airplane and imagining I was an immigrant coming to the United States looking for new opportunities like the War and Peace documentary I watched for a homework assignment. Overall, I enjoy the Oakland Museum.

My experience to the Dallas Museum of Art was a bit different from the last time I had attended the museum. I was curious to see what pieces of art there would be and if it would be the same as the previous visit which was long ago, but to me all the pieces of art were so different and very interesting. It may have been because I saw all the pieces in a new perspective since learning about the different types of paintings there can be and knowing how and where sculptures come from. Even though I do not know much of art I really gave it a try into seeing what the artist may have wanted us to get out of his work. By reading a view of the chapters made me aware of art, I wouldn’t call myself an expert, but it was actually nice knowing that a

By each exit door, a small box requests that visitors write their opinions on the collections and what they would like to see in the future. The museum’s desire to be relevant in the community has shown, as locals were excited to see artwork that they had requested in an earlier trip.

The Art Institute of Chicago that I had known months ago was completely different. The lions looked friendly, the trees looked, and the entrance was covered with plants. This was probably because they decorated the building for the holidays. The lions had giant wreaths around their head with a red bow and the trees had beautiful christmas lights wrapped around them, and the entrance had little wreaths on the doors. The only thing that looked terrifying was the long line to get in. Luckily, Mr. I-Am-So-Smart, to some he is also referred to as Dad, bought the tickets online while we were standing in the line! Smiling, we then walked past the hundreds of people standing in line and went straight through the doors and to the ticket scanners. Getting there was quite the excitement. If you have ever driven to chicago you might notice a small set of lanes next to you often called the express lane. The express lane opens and closes for the various side. We drove onto the expressway I believe the exact second the sign changed at the entrance and the bar went up. We cruised past all of the cars lined up in traffic while laughing amongst ourselves until we finally made it to The Art Institute of Chicago. From there on, it was all amazement and awe.
