Wrestling is an ancient sport and has lots of history. Wrestling was originally from the Greeks. Wrestling in Greece was a big sport; it was the biggest event in the Olympic Games. Wrestling also was blessed by Greek mythology. The God Zeus wrestled the God Cronus for the possession of the universe, and to celebrate the win by Zeus, they made wrestling the decisive final event in the pentathlon.
There 3-styles of wrestling and all are similar but have different qualities. The first style is Greco Roman. This style is very aggressive, all styles of wrestling are. This was the first of all the styles, and back then they used to wrestle to the death. An ancient wrestling coach would say to his team “don’t stop till he’s dead”, and that’s would his students would follow. In the matches they would slam with no regards if their opponent was hurt, unconscious or dead. Now the Greek wrestling has much more rules, fellow a point system, can only use upper body, and is a lot safer than what it was.
The other style is free-style. This style is very similar to Greco. It has the same type of aggression as Greco, but you can use your upper body as well as your lower body. Domenici’s Theotocopoulos-Roman hand-to-hand struggle and freestyle wrestling both involve grappling with a resist, but the two sports have their differences. Although it has an ancient-sounding name, Greco-Roman wrestling originated in France in the 1900’s; the name comes from a desire to include ancient values.
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports, and it has a lot of historical background. Wrestling was established in the 15th and 16th century, but it was not a competitive sport at the time. There have been cave drawings of wrestling found from 3000 B.C., which shows that either the sport or at least ideas about the sport have been around for a long time (Olympic). It was during the pioneer days that wrestling’s popularity began to grow. In Canada, there was a wrestling champion from each of the small villages and settlements. After the champions were crowned, they would all compete against each other and whoever won was the best of the best (Wrestling). A wide variety of people were involved in wrestling, even some presidents, including Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Washington was good enough to win a tournament, and at one point in history, there was a style of wrestling named after him. That style, however, is no longer used in today’s sport.
First stop will be to learn the history of wrestling. As stated “Early Egyptian and Babylonian reliefs show moves still used today” (http://www.athleticscholarships.net/history-of-wrestling.htm). Wrestling was used by the Ancient greeks for soldier combat training. Due to Greeks worry over the sports history,
According to the Olympics Game timeline, the first ever Olympic Games was held in 776 BCE, in Olympia which is in Athens, Greece. They were held there at olympia for 13 years. We don't know how the games began according to Robert Woff, some stories say the Zeus started the game. According to this story, it started out with Zeus and his father, Kronos were wrestling in olympia, who knew it would turn into what it has become. Wrestling wasn’t the only sport in the ancient greek olympics, there were many more that were involved. Some of the original events according to “Ancient sports” are boxing, equestrian events (chariot racing & riding), pankration, pentathlon (discus, javelin, jump, running, wrestling).
The origins of wrestling go back to 15,000 years ago Wrestling is one of the oldest sport played. The Greeks feared the true history of the sport would be lost therefore Greco-Roman wrestling was born from that one type of wrestling many forms were elaborated. The first real traces of the development of wrestling date back to the times of the Sumerians which is 5000 years ago. Drawings , as well as many other vestiges, witness the existence of corporations of wrestlers in Ancient Egypt, wrestling rules and refereeing codes. Fights were similar to those of freestyle wrestling, as shown by drawings and inscriptions from that time. The most famous of all wrestlers was Milon of Croton, six times Olympic champion, ten times winner of the
According to Nigel Binns, in his book “Nuba Wrestling, the original art” he speaks of the Greecian art of wrestling boxing called Pankration, which was originally an art form from Africa (It is similar to Nuba Wrestling mixed with Hausa Boxing) and that the Greeks adopted it as their own. Nigel noted, their style of wrestling called Pankration is said to derive its name from two ancient Egyptian gods; Ra and Aton. Therefore Pan-Ra-Aton/ or Pankration meaning all-powerful God, or spirit.

The Twelve Jewels of the Olympians that taught young gods on mount Olympus by the Pillars of Hercules was the dawning of martial arts outside of Africa and much later the wrestling style was introduced into Europe called Pankration (770 BC).
I will paraphrase ideas presented in scholarly books written by either Linde, Swaddling, or Ellis. Two of these books are about Ancient Olympic wrestling and I can use these ideas to support the importance of the sport and why it was an original sport in the olympics. The other brook focuses on the art of combat and comments on the important life skills that wrestling teaches those who participate. In fact each of these scholarly sources can be interpreted as arguments supporting off-the-mat life lessons. These sources also talk about the significance of the sport in ancient times. The first paragraph or section of the paper focuses on the originality of the sport belonging in the Olympics. Wrestling is the oldest sport there is. I plan to use a cartoon image in this section that draws an analogy. The image is of a man taking down the bottom circle of the 5 ring Olympic symbol which resembles the circle in the middle of a wrestling mat. This image supports the ides that dropping wrestling is like taking out part of the true
First of all, boxing gloves were introduced into boxing not for safety reasons, but to increase hits to the head and dramatic knockouts. Second, an official boxing match between a bear and a man was held in 1949, and the bear won. Third, there is a growing sport in Berlin and London, which is called Chess Boxing. Players alternate between a round of chess and a round of boxing until one is declared winner either by checkmate, knockout, or technical stoppage. Another fact is that approximately 500 boxers have died in the ring or as a result of boxing since 1884. Like boxing, there are also some fascinating facts about wrestling. In fact, wrestling was referenced in the Bible. Surprisingly, wrestling is believed to build perseverance, diligence and determination. There is oil wrestling in Turkey. Wrestlers cover themselves in olive oil. This wrestling match could go on for many days originally, but in 1975 the time was limited to 40 minutes. The sport pankration was a mix of wrestling and boxing it was considered to be one of the toughest sports involved in the Olympics. In this sport punches were allowed to be thrown but the fighters did not wrap their hands with protective tape or padding known as himantes. Many Greek thinkers think the sport was created by Theseus when he defeated a Minotaur in the labyrinth. Certain rules that were outlawed back at the start of Pankration were no biting or gouging out an opponent’s eyes, nose, mouth with your fingernails (Oxford University Press). One rule that is definitely outlawed today but was perfectly legal was kicking an opponent in the belly or below the waist as it is considered today. Pankration did have division’s just like boxing and wrestling for men and boys. Although Pankration did have
Wrestling can be dated as far back as 338 B.C in Ancient Greece although more commonly found in the City State of Athens. To the people of this time, tremendous value was placed on the unity of mind, body, and spirit (Wuest & Bucher, 2009). Being so, as a way of honoring the gods, Zeus in particular the Greeks held the Olympic Games; a festival of such grandeur that all warring city-states proposed a truce in order for the games to be conducted safely. However, after the Roman conquest of Greece the importance of a sound mind in a sound body came to an abrupt end, leading to what was known as blood sports or as most people know them by, gladiatorial sports. (Wuest & Bucher, 2009)
It all started back in the year of 704. The place was Greece. There were two men by the names of Ambrose and Irene. Ambrose means “relating to the immortals.” And Irene means”peace.” They loved to do play acting, but they loved to wrestle more, but what they did not like to do was hurt people intentionally. During those days wrestling was debuting in the Olympiad. Everyone loved to watch it and they also loved to see the different types of people that did the wrestling. They had both tried wrestling, but they had both gotten injured someway. Ambrose got hurt on his right leg, and he rolled his right ankle during the same match. Irene got hurt by having his knee getting twisted when he was slammed to the ground during the match he had. With both of them getting hurt when they are wrestling they wanted to
